Even the name sounds daunting. The Academy’s Ancient…oh wait, stuffed up already. The Ancient’s Academy of Mage Excellence. How’s that for a fancy name? But, in all honesty, that’s because it’s the world’s only magic school, and where I live is the only place where it exists. Y’see, I’m not like one of those guys down on the land below, that doesn’t even float, I’ve lived my life on a floating continent. Our resources rely on our skills, our magic, and thus, we have many of it, and there’s no need for greed and self-interest to prevail, like I’ve heard on the land below. But, I don’t believe it. I think they’d be like us, just…a little different, that’s all. But someday, I’m going to go and see for myself.
Anyway, I’m not going to talk about all that right now. Today, I joined school. Fantastic. Just six years, which will prove to be my most strenuous, and stressful. I’ve never been anywhere like here before. It’s not really like a school, I mean, not everyone’s even around my age. It’s not uncommon to see people doing first year courses, and they’re like twenty something and they should be living a real life. I mean, imagine getting out when you’re thirty. And you realise you should be married, and living the high life. How sad would it be?
Well, I’ll start from the top. When I got to school, I realised one thing I’d never seen before. Complete order. Even though the majority of us were quite old, we still marched in lines, and were to call the teachers “sir”. I’m sad to say that we were to attend an assembly after that, and unfortunately I have a very short attention span. Within fifteen minutes of the first lecture welcoming us to the institution, I found my eyes wandering, and my concentration wavering…I ended up watching the guy next to me, who too, had lost interest in the lecture. He was slouched unusually low in his seat, almost as if he were trying to merge into it. His head looked like it was on fire, but it was just his hair. Very cool looking hair might I add, though it must take at least four hours a day to maintain it. I noticed a dim glow from his hands, and realised he was conjuring fire. Even the most basic magic impresses me. Everyone’s good at their own thing, and so it’s cool to watch every last bit of it. I asked him: “How long did it take for you to learn how to do that?”
He answered very modestly, “Oh, you need skill, and it’ll take about six years.”
“Six years, now that’s funny. You’d have to be from the unfloating land to take that long.” I paused. “Or, you could be like you.”
He chuckled. “How about both?” He decided to try and impress me, and twirled his hands about in an idiotic fashion, with both his hands seemingly on fire, then with a clap, the flames vanished. As idiotic as it was, I have to say, it was still pretty cool. I was almost regretting not doing fire…think of all the cool things you could do! I could even improve my weapon, which I valued before most other things.
At long last, the assembly ended, and we made our way to random buildings, which were random dorms, where we found random rooms, all identical, and then chose random beds. Even though the fortress had been standing since medieval times or something, it was still furnished elaborately, and I couldn’t help but be impressed. True, it was completely element proof, so I wasn’t able to set things fire when I pleased, but I still liked it, and at it was a relief I was able to escape here if I ever desired.
There was still so much to do though, friends to make, girls to meet, things to kill, but best of all….magic to learn.
