"I can't be having with this sort of thing."
---------------------
Regan bid Makina goodnight, having found her to have been a nice, if overly naive, person. She was mildly surprised that Masashi had returned before the cows came home, so to speak. She'd seen him out of the corner of her eye peeking into the dining room.
She sat up for a while in bed. Regan required very little sleep. It was a leftover from the Gigarl days when her room backed onto the neighbouring pub where a certain off-key customer never failed to karaoke, very badly, every night, without fail. A leftover, much like Masashi, whom she tolerated because he was possibly the only person she could call friend. As she thought the word 'tolerated', she had a gut feeling that it wasn't right to use the word 'tolerated' with friends.
She mulled for a while on this, about a lot of things, about forgetting to have proper fun with persons other than herself and keeping people at arm's length and the wisdom of doing so, and at length the part of Regan that was not soppy and romantic said, "I can't be having with this."
However, the part of Regan that was soppy and romantic kept to itself and smiled and thought a secret something.
*
The next morning, Regan woke early and cranky. Always had, always would; though she did not make any move to go downstairs because she was poring over a map of their world, such as it was. She was deciding on a route, a topic she was absolutely sure no one else had bothered to touch on yet. She stared at the map.
The most obvious route was through Weran; the way she had come. They could always go through the unnamed island north of Weran, or have a happy happy voyage sailing. What was certain was that once they got to the mainland, there was a high chance they'd get lost in the desert, and what with such a motley band, Regan wasn't sure she could handle guiding them all.
Eventually she folded up the map, shrugging, and went down to have breakfast. Tea. Need tea.
The only people down as yet were Riko and Masashi. Just what she wanted to see in the morning: cheerful people.
Riko said, quite happily and with a warm smile, "Well, good morning."
Regan's tone was the exact polar opposite of Riko's as she replied, "Morning, all." Need tea. Need tea. (what remained of her internal politeness factor didn't work until she had gotten her first caffeine dose. one of her lesser vices, caffeine was nonetheless paramount to the continued functioning of her senses.)
After digging a teapot, a teacup, and a bag of leaf tea out of her pocket in rapid succession, she retrieved a sugarbowl and some hot water from the adjoining table. Two minutes and three seconds later she lowered her cup, and said, quite pleasantly for Regan: "We need a route. Anyone for tea?"
