Basawe
“Helping was its own reward.” she said as she turned to walk out of the room...
...and into Basawe and Kuji.
"'Helping was it's own reward.'." Basawe said, giving Retasu a dirty look that could probably kill a human. "Really? That's not the Saiyan creed I learned on Ninjin. The one I learned was more like "Helping is it's own reward when it benefits you." Does that sound familiar to you at all?"
Retasu waved her hand.
"Basawe, how often do we have to go through this?" she said in a patronizing tone. "You act like I'M the bad guy everytime we walk into each other."
"Not three hours ago, you threatened to blow up the planet when your ship landed at the stadium." Basawe sneered, looking past Retasu and at the now-intact Gamma on the table. The elder woman tending to him stopped and her jaw dropped when she heard Basawe's statement. Retasu growled.
"Shut your mouth." she ordered. "I have my reasons for being here, and blowing up this world isn't one of them. Now get out of my way."
But Basawe stood his ground.
"That man... robot man..." he stuttered.
"Android." Kuji and the woman tending said Android replied simultaneously.
"That Android." Basawe finished. "Why did you offer to fix him? You're a Saiyan princess. That means you're the most pompous and uncaring of all of them. You wouldn't help anyone unless it benefitted you. And don't tell me that you thought his help was needed in battle - he's already been defeated once, and you're stronger than him anyway. Saiyans NEVER help the weak."
Retasu paused for a moment, before responding.
"Then why don't you tell me why they fixed you...?"
Silence filled the room... Basawe just stood there, unsure of what he'd just heard. Retasu... was right. Why WAS he helped...? And the Android... They were both very similar to their kind, yet also very different. Was it interest in their potential that persuaded the Saiyans to assist them? A desire to know more about the unknown? That had to be it. A desire to see a stronger weapon.
Basawe knew that, for all his strange enhancements, he was NOT that weapon... Retasu's eyes seemed to silently confirm that, but not in the smug mocking way she normally would have... It was just a fact, one that she seemed almost pensive over.
"Thank you."
The silence was broken by the Android, who was now sitting up.
And addressing Retasu.
"You're welcome." she replied, smiling slightly, and then turning to leave. Kuji gave Basawe a sympathetic look before he and Victoria left as well.
Basawe just stood there for a long moment, looking through his mind much like Gamma looked over his body. He had very rarely questioned it, and certainly nobody else had. He just accepted it and went on with his less-than-perfect life. But Retasu's question had hit him hard...
