Breeding - Pichu

Here I am posting again lol Anyways... I breeded a male Pikachu with a Ditto in order to get another Pikachu... I needed those 2 Pikachu in order to breed those together and get a Pichu... To my surprise, when the egg hatched for the original Pikachu and Ditto, I got a Pichu.... wtf lol Ya it was easier on my part (cuz I didn't have to breed again), but anyone know why that happened?

P.S. It was a Pikachu imported from Yellow.... so maybe that had something to do with it...

Anytime that you breed two Pokémon, the baby will be at Level 5, and it will be at the lowest evolutionary form of whatever species it's mother was. If you breed a Pokémon with a Ditto, the baby will always the same species as the non-Ditto parent, it doesn't matter if the non-Ditto parent was the father or the mother. So, when you breed a Pikachu with a Ditto, you should get a Pichu. You can't get a Pikachu to hatch from an egg, in G/S/C, whenever something hatches from an egg, it will always be at it's lowest evolutionary form.

Basically, the only time a pokémon hatching from an egg is not at its lowest possible form is when, in Ruby, Sapphire, Fire Red or Leaf Green, you hatch a Marill or Wobbuffet. Otherwise, the identity of the father has absolutely no impact on the identity of the baby, only on the moves it might hatch with.
(Regarding Marill and Wobbuffet, Nintendo likes to pretend that new species existed in previous versions, your character just couldn't possibly obtain them, so they made Marill and Wobbuffet need to hold certain items in order to make eggs holding their new pre-evos, Azurill and Wynaut.)

Every Pokémon has a set of DVs. (Deter Values) DVs can never be changed, unless you use a Gameshark, and they are automatically set when you catch a Pokémon. DVs decide what a Pokémon's "personal max stats" are. For example, Butterfree has a maximum Defense stat of 198. However, one Butterfree's Defense stat may go no higher then 178, while another's may be 190, and another's could be 184. If a Butterfree's Defense stat is 198, then it is said to have maximum Defense DVs. Anyways, DVs are used to decide a lot of different things, such as a Pokémon's personal max stats, a Pokémon's Hidden Power type and base power, and whether or not a Pokémon is shiny. DVs can be anywhere from 0-15, and each stat has it's own DV, except for Special Attack and Special Defense, they are combined into one DV, which is referred to as the "Special" DV. A DV of 15 means that the Pokémon will be able to reach it's species' maximum for that stat, so a Butterfree with a Defense DV of 15 can have a Defense stat of 198, which is the maximum for it's species. If a Pokémon has a DV of 0 for a stat, then it's personal maximum for that stat will be 30 points lower then the maximum for it's species. For example, a Butterfree with a Defense DV of 0 will have a maximum of 168 for it's Defense stat. If a DV is lower then 15, then you subtract 2 points from the maximum stat for a Level 100 Pokémon for each 1 point that the DV is off from 15.

Here is a little chart to explain this better. The number on the left is the DV, and the number on the right is how much the Pokémon will be off of the max stat for it's species.

A Pokémon's DVs are completely random, except for it's DV for Hit Points. (HP) A Pokémon's HP DV is decided by the DVs for it's other stats.

If the attack DV is an odd number, add 8. If it is an even number, add 0.

If the defense DV is an odd number, add 4. If it is an even number, add 0.

If the speed DV is an odd number, add 2. If it is an even number, add 0.

If the special DV is an odd number, add 1. If it is an even number, add 0.

Once you have determined your DVs, you can now learn how to breed stats.


You have to figure out your Pokémon's DVs to determine what the DVs of the baby of two Pokemon will be. The DVs of the baby are dependant on the gender of the baby, the parents, and a little bit of randomness.

Unless a Ditto is used for breeding, the DVs will be inherited from the parent that is the opposite gender from the gender of the baby. If Ditto is used in the breeding, the baby will inherit Ditto's DVs. A baby will inherit the Defense and Special DVs from the parent that it inherits it's genes from. The Attack and Speed DVs are random. The HP DV is dependant on the DVs from the other stats.

Well, there is a way that you can figure out DVs.

Rare Candy a Pokémon up to Level 100, and then max out it's stat experience by box tricking. Here is a little explaination on box tricking...

To do the box trick, take a Level 100 Pokémon, and simply go out and fight Pokémon until your Pokémon runs out of PP for all of it's moves. When you go to The Pokémon Center to restore your Pokémon, deposit the Pokémon that you are working with in a box in the PC, and then take it back out. You should notice that some of the Pokémon's stats have increased a little bit. Keep box tricking until your Pokémon's stats stop increasing. If you box trick 2-3 times, and none of your Pokémon's stats increase, then it is pretty safe to assume that your Pokémon has all of it's stat experience, and it has reached it's personal max stats.

The box trick works because of "Stat Experience". Stat Experience is not the same as the regular experience you see and gain after you finish a Pokémon battle. When your Pokémon has reached it's max Stat Experience, then its statistics have been maxed out, the Pokémon has reached it's "Personal maximum" for that stat. A Pokémon's personal maximum stats are decided by it's DV's. The total amount of Stat Experience that a Pokémon can acquire is 65,536. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing exactly how much Stat Experience your Pokémon has, because there is no way to see how much stat experience a Pokémon has, stat experience is calculated "inside" the game. Whenever your Pokémon's stats won't go up anymore after repeatedly doing the box trick, then it means that the Pokémon has likely reached it's personal max stats, it has aquired the 65,536 stat experience for it's stats. You can now determine what your Pokémon's DVs are. Also, note that each stat has its own stat experience stat. For a Pokémon to reach it's personal max stats, it will have to get 65,536 stat experience points in each individual stat, HP, attack, defense, speed, special attack, and special defense. The amount of stat experience that a Pokémon gets is equal to the base stats of the Pokémon that it defeated. For example, if your Pokémon beat a Tangela, it would get this much stat experience for each stat:

HP: 65
Attack: 55
Defense: 115
Speed: 60
Special Attack: 100
Special Defense: 40

So, if you are trying to focus on getting stat experience in one particular stat, try to beat up on Pokémon that have higher values in the stat the you want to raise. If you want to raise Defense, fight Pokémon that have high Defense, if you want to raise Speed, fight Pokémon that have high Speed. Also, for stat experience, it doesn't matter what level the opposing Pokémon is, because base stats never change. Beating a Level 10 Tangela will get you the same amount of stat experience as beating a Level 50 Tangela.
