    Nothing special happens if you mark a Pokemon it just helps you if you use a certain coding system yourself for each mark. You could mark Pokemon when they have maxed their EVs so you know you can't EV Train them anyone. You could mark a Pokemon with the heart shape if it's going to be in Contests. This is just a useful idea I sometimes use and maybe you could use it too or make your own use for the marks.

    I mark my eggs. Often I breed so much, I am not sure what is in what egg, they get all jumbled. It's a great way to organize. Like if had breed a bunch of spinarak eggs then at the same time breed and got many eggs for aron's i would label them. And not walk around for ever with a spinarak egg which I thought was an aron egg when i had allready got a spinarak with the best nature and abiltlity.

    I only mark Pokémon that need to be evolved for my Pokédex:
    Triangle = Level Up Evolution
    Circle = Stone Evo.
    Square = Trade Evo.
    Heart = Happiness Evo.

    It's a nice little addition that I find quite useful.

    I really only use it for eggs, the same as have a stammer does. Since you can't name eggs it's the only way of keeping track of which batch they are from.

    Ha, I can't believe I never tried marking eggs before. Wish I knew that earlier. Now I have two boxes full of "Mystery" eggs that I trade to friends every once in a while. It's a good way for me to get rid of some, and it's fun for them, too - there's always a nice surprise in store. Sometimes it could just be a Machop, or a Tentacool with Mirror Coat or something. If I had marked them, I would have had at least some idea of what they are. Oh well, at least I'll use that from now on.

    I remember when I did the Mystery Egg thing in GSC -- I had traded my friend an egg, and then he asked me where he could find Marill. Right then, the egg hatched into a Marill. Kinda creepy

    Anyways, I used to mark my Spinda and Kecleon, based on their moves and such... but now I mostly mark members of my team. Members of Deception have the heart and circle, Nightmare Force has heart and square, and Team Wavelength's got heart and triangle.

    I love the marking system, however simple it may be
    Working ;D

    You could keep track of which EVs you want to level them up for, I suppose. Heart=special, etc.

    I never use it.
