I assure you that neither of them are three dollars a month. One is thirty (DSL) and the other is forty three (Cable).

You only need one modem. Your best bet is to set up a home network.

I recommend the Linksys cable modem if prepurchasing is applicable in your area. If you live in East Valley, California, then you will probably have to purchase the modem through Adelphia.

Another reason not to go with Verizon is that you would be using MSN Premium if you did, whereas with the cable you wouldn't have to sign into anything.
