Poke Poke Poke that was the sound that the meat created as I jabbed it with what could be called a very primitive fork. Danny, Ankha, and myself were sitting around a wooden table eating off of not the cleanest plates, on what was the worst tasting meat that I had ever eaten, it was so burnt that I couldn’t tell if it was a Steak or maybe chicken. The drinks they gave us in the large cups that I couldn’t even fit my hands around, didn’t taste any better. The liquid was bitter and red in color; it also scratches the back of my throat when I drank it so I tried to stay away from it as much as possible.
“Are you going to eat Ryan?” Danny finally asked as I created more holes in the meat then actual bites of it. My response consisted of a sigh; I used to tease my sister so much for not eating, even when the food tasted bad. Now I was in the same predicament and just couldn’t muster up the appetite for it.
“Maybe if I go take a walk, I can find my appetite” I replied scooting myself away from the table and standing up, while instinctively smoothing my clothes out to make sure that they weren’t wrinkled.
“Don’t stray too far from this place” Danny replied with a tone that sounded like a big brother talking to his little sister, making sure to know where her place was and that she was not a equal to him.
“I’m not a kid you know” I glared back at him, Danny began to grin a bit knowing that he had me right where he wanted me, all he had to do is move in for the kill.
“Could have fooled..” Danny began but was cut off by Ankha who sat up.
“We’re all just worried about getting lost since we are all new to this world, no one thinks that you’re a kid.” Ankha replied softly, for some reason I felt calmer while my cheeks began to feel flush again, I nodded and walked out of the door quickly before Danny could say anything.
The sun had dipped low into the horizon line as I walked outside, a cool breeze from the north was signaling the quickly approaching nightfall where the Earth or where ever this was, cooled itself off. “It’s not like this back home,” A girl said softly next to me, observing the sunset as I did. I nodded before turning to her, she was the fellow girl archer: Saria, or really Laura.
“Yeah, I guess that is one of the finer points of this place, no big city lights, I bet you can see all the stars in the sky when nightfall finally comes” I sighed taking in the majestic beauty of the sunset as oranges and yellows streaked across the sky. “Tried your bow and arrow yet?” I asked feeling the bow at my side; I slowly brought it up aiming it at a broken sign across the now empty street.
“Lets see if I can..” I said slowly aiming it and then grabbing an arrow, I had never shot a bow before so I was somewhat doing this on instinct, and somewhat trying to copy the old Indian movies on TV. “There” I whispered sending it flying effortlessly across the street only to be sent off course at the last second by another arrow, sending mine spiraling into the dirt. “HEY!” I shouted turning to her, the arrow that had knocked mine off course was now firmly planted in the sign; Laura had her bow in her hands and a bit of a smile on her face.
“Wanna go walking around?” I asked, the childish enthusiasm in my voice didn’t annoy me that much this time but I did wince a bit. She shrugged and finally nodded, the market well if you could call it a market wasn’t too far away, the area we were at had a few shops that were built into homes and a fruit stand or too, nothing really stuck out and the fruit kind of smelled.
I began to stray from the main street and over to one of the house/shops there were some dresses and shirts there, some of them stained some not. The dresses were not that fancy and seemed to match the same ones that the locals were walking around with. “You are travelers, yes?” A freaky old woman with bad teeth asked walking up to us.
“We’re from a place far away from here” Laura spoke up before I could answer, her response was a lot better than mine, which just consisted of the simple ‘yeah’.
“OH! Then may I interest you in some clothes, they are much better than the old rags you are wearing” She said with a twinge of jealousy in her voice. Yet her eyes seemed to light up, as if she knew she could sucker us into something. “Or maybe a pretty necklace or bracelet for a pretty lady?” She asked bringing a wooden tray of jewelry in front of Laura.
“We just wanna look” Laura replied, the old woman put the tray back down and walked back into the shop grumbling. I reached over picking up a necklace with a deep blue stone that seemed oddly cut. I was never big on looking at jewelry, even when Sam was taking me from shop to shop to find a promise ring for Dani. Yet this, this necklace gave me a feeling like I had to have it. Like a new video game or something. “We should be heading back, just incase before people start to worry” Laura said walking around the store before coming back to me, I placed down the necklace, embarrassed that I was looking at girly stuff.
I nodded and began to walk back to the hotel. “Tell your friends that I am looking for someone to help me clean the store,” The woman yelled at us as we walked away. I rolled my eyes, didn’t she know that we were on a special journey…well I guess she didn’t, yet we couldn’t be bothered with small things, we had to save this world. Atleast I think we needed to save this world.
