Syberia vs. Weasel Overlord, ref: Ace

Been so long since I've set foot in here... who wants the honor of giving me my first battle?

Let's just do a quick 1 on 1
I'll send out my pokemon first,
You can attack first

For the arena, I think I'll use an old favorite.

Arena:
The Tower of Orthanc

(Minus the Orcs, wizards, evil eyes wreathed in flame, etc of course)

A tall tower of black obsidian, rising from the once prominent land of Isengard below. However, in the present day, it is the sole structure left standing among a barren wasteland of fire, ash, and debris. Battle will actually begin on the bottom most of eight stories. Now, for obvious reasons, the moves Earthquake and Fissure may not be used here. For they may bring the very walls of the tower down in their fury. To this end, Saruman himself keeps watch over this arena, and will smite the user of any such attacks for 20% damage.

Every other round, a mysterious magic will teleport both combatants up one floor. Once they both reach the eighth (top) story, the arena becomes a vast, open-air platform on top of the tower itself. There are railings to prevent most pokemon from falling off on their own accord; but it is still possible to cause this through the use of certain moves. If a pokemon falls from the tower and is unable to get back up by its own means, Saruman will teleport it back to the top, but not before it loses roughly 10% of its health. The night sky itself, now visible above, twinkles with the glow of moonlight and starlight through the faint whisps of clouds. Obviously, this is the only floor in the arena where weather-altering attacks can be used.

I pick Testament, my male Dragonair.

Prebattle

Orthanc. Once it was a sacred place, a home to some of the greatest minds Middle-Earth had ever seen. Once, it was a symbol of the power of Saruman, where he marshaled his forces before turning them loose. Now, it is the battle site for Pokemon trainers. How times change. Saruman, dressed in resplendent white robes, watches the scene with dark eyes, while your Most Humble Referee takes his position on the other side of the room.

Not that the Pokemon aren’t legendary themselves. On one side of the great room on the ground floor of Orthanc is a majestic looking Arcanine. His mouth seems to be curved in a toothy grin. On the other side of the room is a mystical Dragonair, who regards her opponent calmly. The trainers quickly relay their commands, and the referee goes about his business: the increasingly difficult job of interpretation.

Round One, Begin!

Aelethil (sorry, but your Most Humble Referee feels the need to shorten) focuses his energy, creating a glimmering shield in front of him. The shield rotates for a few moments before disappearing, though its effects lie below the surface. (-5% energy) While the Arcanine is pre-occupied, Testament goes about his own orders. He concentrates, forcing his own will on the outside world, creating a life-sized plush toy, in the shape of a Dragonair. (-25% health, -8% energy) It’s an incredibly realistic doll, and the ref can hardly believe it was created by something without opposable thumbs.

His mind mentally coerced into thinking the doll is the true dragon, Aelethil snarls, before leaping high into the air and coming down squarely on top of the doll. The doll squeaks loudly from the pressure. (-6% health, -5% energy)Testament takes his time, drawing a bead on his target, before spraying a burst of high-pressure water into Aelethil’s face. (-8% health, -7% energy) The Arcanine yelps, surprised, his eyes glowed on the Substitute.

Shaking the water out of his eyes, the huge dog’s eyes narrow. Within the space of a second, he’s one side of the room and back again. The Dragonair doll, looking considerably more battered, flies into the corner of the room. (-9% health, -7% energy) Testament ignores the doll flying dangerously close to his head and belches forth a stream of green fire. The dragon’s flames wash over the Arcanine, who growls in annoyance. (-8% health, -6% energy) But hey, at least he’s dry.

As Round One comes to an end, Saruman mutters a few words of power, his hands tracing odd designs into the air. The very air seems to become heavier, pressing against the combatants like an anvil, and quite suddenly, the ground floor is gone. They are one floor higher, in the dining hall of Orthanc.

Thanks for reffing, Ace. Oh, and kudos on the way you spell it out how much damage/energy each move used. That's going to end up being really helpful, I'm sure.

Alright Testament, let's see if you can't use these tables and everything to your advantage. Fill the whole room with a thick Haze so Arcanine can't see you as you get to safety under or behind a table, then hit him through the mist with a foolproof Swift barrage. If Arcanine manages to somehow remove your icy smokescreen, take the opportunity to nail him with Bubblebeams.

Round Two, Begin!

Our battlers find themselves in the dining room of Orthanc. This time, Testament makes the first move. He inhales deeply, before emitting a black, smog-like substance which wafts into the air, obscuring view.(-4% energy) The Haze spreads, blocking Testament from sight as the lithe dragon throws himself beneath a table. Ael stays perfectly still, focusing his keen senses. His nostrils twitch, picking from the numerous odors of smoke and meat in the room, to that of Testament.(-3% energy) Odd. He smells like…plushy.

Shrugging, the orange canine stealthily sneaks stalks the Substitute (hey, alliteration!), unknowing of Testament’s true location. He spots the Dragonair’s tale beneath a table and lunges forward, his jaw widening. A burst of dragon fire blasts out, blackening the hapless doll. (10% damage, -8% energy) A blast of rays in the shape of stars smacks him in the back of the head from out of nowhere. (5% damage, -4% energy)

Shaking his head, Ael unleashes another blast of flame on his opponent, who curiously, has not moved yet. (9% damage, -7% energy) When the flames clear, Ael’s eyes widen. Testament is gone! Apparently, the Dragonair has gone up in smoke. He’s still sniffing the site of impact when another Swift nails him in the noggin. (5% damage, -4% energy)

Round Two comes to an end. Saruman, growing annoyed at the thick smoke, clears the fog away with a wave of his hand. The air once more gains weight, leaving the combatants with a quickly familiar sensation of being sat on. Then, they are one floor higher, in the library of Orthanc. Testament looks about in confusion, his cover gone, as he stands in the middle of an aisle of bookshelves. What the hell is The Silmarillion?

Never-miss moves’ power will be weakened, just because there’s so much time spent avoiding obstacles.

Well done Ael, you're doing well my love. This round, I want you to start with a Swift of your own. Follow it up with an Extremespeed, but get out of there fast if any water comes your way; then finish up with a Dragonbreath.

Alright Testament, now's where we really hurt him. Spin around and use an Iron Tail to knock over the bookshelves on both sides of you; create a domino effect and hopefully pin your opponent under one of them as it falls. If you manage that, listen for your opponent to make any noise when he's hit and incinerate the bookshelves, him, and all with a Fire Blast in his direction. End by relaxing if you don't think he can get to you, otherwise meet his Dragonbreath halfway with your own.

Round Three, Begin!

The library…the place wizards go when they pretend to be ‘sages.’ Bah. I lost my library card years ago…

In any case, Testament spins about in a tight circle, his tail glowing a metallic grey.(-7% energy) His attacks works just as planned, knocking over both bookcases on either side of him easily, which in turn pushes the next bookcase over. Meanwhile, a few feet away, Ael fires off a bolt of Swift. (-4% energy)

Ael takes off after the Swift ray just as the bookcases next to him begin to topple. The Arcanine barely manages to escape the trap, his tail scraped slightly by the wood as he bolts out. (4% damage, -7% energy) Testament relaxes, staying alert, as he senses that his opponent has narrowly escaped being crushed. (+4% energy) A few moments later, the Swift bolts finally strike him in the face, their power lessened over time. (4% damage) At the entrance of the aisle stands Ael, who seems delighted to see that Testament is still alive.

Both Pokemon lock eyes, determined. Simultaneously, twin blasts of flame fly from their mouths and meet in the middle of the aisle. Ael and Testament pour on the pressure, determined to overpower the other. However, Testament, being a dragon-type, is more skilled with his element, and pushes through, dealing slight damage to Ael. (5% damage, -9% energy to both.)

Round Three comes to an end… The library is an utter mess! Saruman’s black eyes narrow, as he grumbles in anger. Who’s going to pay for all this? Sighing, he teleports the battlers to the next room up, where less damage will be done…hopefully.

Arena: 4th floor- Guest rooms. A circular room with plenty of space. The rest of the room has many beds for travelers/wizards to rest in, but Saruman doesn’t mind making beds, so don’t hesitate to jump on them.

Alright Testament, you've got a nice open area to work with here. Stare your opponent down with a Leer, then use a Water Pulse and close in with a Body Slam!

Round Four, Begin!

The battle continues in the guest rooms, but neither Pokemon show signs of sleepiness.

With plenty of room to work with, Testament squares up with the Arcanine and fixes him with a piercing glare. (-2% energy) Ael hesitates for half a second, before throwing his head back and howling as loud as he can. (-2% energy) The eerie call echoes off the stone walls of the room, making it seem louder than it is. When Ael lowers his eyes, he feels more confident.

Testament scowls, before conjuring a thick sphere of water in his mouth. Aiming with one eye, he fires the ball of water directly at the dog. (-7% energy) However, Ael is already in motion, evading the Water Pulse and charging directly at the Dragonair. As he passes by, he bends his head low, ripping his fangs along the length of Testament’s body. (9% damage, -7% energy.) Testament grunts as Ael stops behind him, looking satisfied.

Both Pokemon leap into the air as one, following orders… Ael slashes at Testament’s underbelly with his jaws, his powerful legs pushing him into the air. (7% damage, -5% energy) Testament winces, but swings his looping tail about, striking the dog in the chin and causing him to yelp. (8% damage, -6% energy) Both Pokemon move in opposite directions, landing perfectly.

Round Four comes to an end, and Saruman is pleased to note that little damage has been done to the guest room. Success! Sadly, he remembers that the next room is the kitchens…

Arena: 5th floor- Kitchens. A wide room cut in two by a long counter, where rows of dishes lay unwashed in sinks. At the far end of the room are ovens, which are still turned on, for some strange reason. Guess Saruman doesn’t fear flame.


I've been thinking about abolishing energy KO's in my matches, like Elec Man is doing... When you reach O energy, your Pokemon rests for three turns and recovers 30% energy, no health. Are you two cool with that, or should I keep energy KO's in effect?

Yeah, that sounds like a great idea. I might even start doing something like that in my reffings. I've seen one too many people win a match by simply dodging attacks.

When he charges you, I want you to grab his body with your tail and Slam him hard into the lit ovens. Round Five, Begin!

As the battle moves into the kitchens, the ref takes the chance to make himself a quick snack...Don't worry, I'll be right with you...

Feeling fierce, Ael locks eyes with his opponent and roars/barks at him as loud as he can.(-3%) The awesome sound reverberates off of the walls many times. Spooked, Testament gladly slithers on the other side of the room, glad to put the ovens between him and the Arcanine. Using his tail as a finger, the dragon taunts Ael with a bravado he doesn't really feel. (-3% energy) Ael's eyes glow a dark red, suddenly enraged.

The Arcanine leaps over the ovens, his tail gleaming with power. Testamen shudders, seeing the source of his fear coming so close to him, and is bowled over by the coming Iron Tail attack, sending him back against the counter. (8% damage, -8% energy) Ael growls slightly, two feet away from the dragon. Testament shudders and lashes out with his tail, fright forcing him into action.(7% damage, -6% energy) His tail once again swats Ael in the face, who sneezes quickly, his nose really hurting now.

Quickly, Testament tries to put some distance between himself and the dog. However, Ael easily catches up to the fleeing Dragonair and slams into him at high speed. Testament cries out in pain as he is sent sliding across the room.(9% damage, -7% energy) However, not that he's farther away from the Arcanine, he's feeling a little more in control. Skull Bash is out of the question- no way he's going any closer than he needs to.Testament sits up and charging negative ions along his scales, throws a terrific blast of Thunder directly into Ael, lighting his nerves on fire.(10% damage, -9% energy) Blackened and smoking, Ael painfully climbs to his feet.

Round Five comes to an end, and the kitchen is in pretty good shape. The ref quickly wolfs down his sandwich as the teleportation begins, then immediately wishes he hadn't. Apparently, teleporting isn't too good for digestion...

Arena: 6th floor- Balcony. A large room with two doors on either end, which leads out to the balcony and a spectacular view of Middle-Earth.Falling is a danger here, as the guardrails are constructed out of (mere)stone. Any falling Pokemon will be rescued by Saruman at the cost of 10% Health.

Alright, he's going to have to take a break soon. Testament, if he makes any clones or any other attempt to deceive you, find him and hit him with Swift. If he rests, take your best shot with Water Gun, as long as he's exposed. However, if he tries anything else, and you don't feel like you're in any immediate danger, just take a break.

Testament takes it easy, laying back on his haunches.(+5% energy) Ael roars loudly again, his eyes locked on the Dragonair. (-3%energy)It doesn't really bother him- Testament is quite sure he is going nowhere near that dog, thank you.

Now it's the Arcanine's turn to relax. He leans back and settles, closing his eyes and breathing deep for two turns. (+10% energy) Testament takes the chance to douse the dog thoroughly with two quick blasts of water. (12% damage, -10% energy)

Arena: 7th floor- Observatory. Many delicate pieces of equipment lay here, all used for spying and stargazing purposes. The machines are a bit tough to maneuver around, but what can't be dodged can be destroyed...
