Michael Moore's SiCKO

Yesterday I went to the DGA in New York and met Michael Moore, watched his new film about Healthcare 'SiCKO' and enjoyed a Q+A session with the bug guy. The movie was great, I suggest everyone see it. This thread is for anyone who might have a question about the experience.

Yeah, is he a big fat stupid white man? A bunch of right-wing idiots are so insecure about the size of their penises (and, bizarrely enough for a bunch of homophobics, the size of their president's penis) that every time he makes a film or writes a book, they have to keep calling him stupid and fat as they have no real counter-arguments. But since I'm a shallow idiot, I think I won't like him if he is a big fat stupid white man.

I wouldnt call him stupid, or fat, those are too low for someone like me. I believe he is manipulative, I think that he is a genious in his manipulation and excludes many facts. I think he has a insane amount of Politcial Bias, and that what he does is not healthy or helpful to this country.

I agree that some of his methods are unsound, such as playing certain quotations made at different times back to back to make what a person is sound look out of context, or to miss out certain facts. He does, however, make valid arguments but his critics spend too much time insulting his weight and attacking his technique that none of his critics ever address his arguments. Look at Mike Wilson and David T. Hardy: they never really address any of the arguments Moore puts forward, they just say, 'Moore is a fat guy, now here is some asshole saying "God Bless America".'

The worst part is is that pretty much all of his critics who end up making these shitty 'documentaries' (is calling a guy fat and stupid for 2 hours considered a documentary?) commit many of the same crimes (quoting out of context, missing out key facts, political bias) that they accuse Moore of. Pot? Kettle?

I don't agree with Moore's techniques and there are far more talented people out there who've given better arguments without using dubious methods at exposing the facts behind the corruption and idiocy, but since Moore has publicity and the media on his side, at least someone is putting the arguments forward. Moore has opened the floodgates for documentary films to become part of the mainstream. I doubt films such as Super Size Me would have been made if Moore hadn't brought documentaries to the fore.

Still, it could be worse. You could be a close-minded ungrateful redneck who perpetuates lies and hypocrisy on a website that is only still running thanks to Moore. Oh wait...

I wouldn't say unhelpful or unhealthy - he gets people thinking, and, if you're a Conservative, on the plus-side, you've already made your mind up before you've even seen his films, so it isn't exactly like you're being brainwashed. On the other hand, people who are more open-minded get thinking after seeing documentaries, which I suppose doesn't sit well with politicians, who need less people thinking and more people voting mindlessly and paying taxes. Who knows? If people started forming opinions about things and started thinking about why they were voting for certain people and why they were paying certain taxes and why certain schools keep getting shot up, they might start demanding change, and that's the last thing anyone wants. After all, Hitler hated change, and he was a good guy*.

*Not really, but if I was an idiot who took Nazi quotes out of context like certain idiots in a recently closed thread, I sure wish I had an awesome Hitler quote to back me up here.

There is a line between documentary and propaganda, the problem is Moore has proven time and time again, especially with Fahreinheit 9/11 that he blurs that line alot, and sometimes crosses it. I have no doubt that Sicko will step over that line again. Moore enjoys glossing up the side he likes, and demonizing the other side using lies and editing techniques. The ends just do not justify the means.

Welcome to the world of modern documentary making, and that is how it has been for the last ten to fifteen years. Believe it or not, people have an agenda, usually political, and nowadays if you don't take your argument to the extreme, you're not going to get noticed. Look at party political broadcasts; nowadays instead of promoting their parties ideas, they stop short of outing their opponent as a pedophile by misquoting and editting footage. Some of the election broadcasts I looked at on YouTube made Moore look like a saint. Insulting Moore's methods just doesn't work because, as much as anyone who disagrees with him hates the way he spreads his arguments, all he is doing is playing by the same rules everyone else in his field does, and unfortunately, no one has realised it might be more prudent to attack his arguments rather than his methods and perhaps not to base the foundations of their attacks on the fact that Moore is a big fat white man.

Oh trust me, I can make a hay day out of any of Moore's arguments, especially in 9/11, as well as a few in Sicko. And I havnt seen a Propaganda piece as edited up as some of Michael Moore's films are. Also Magmar, you know I am a registered Republican right?

It isn't Michael Moore that I have a problem with, it's his ability to sway the stupid masses. I'm not what you would call conservative and Moore isn't really a bad guy (read), I just wish people would learn to think for themselves and not buy into his skewed views.

He just pretends that everywhere besides America is Candyland, and that here we're just too evil and stupid to build our Marshmallow Palaces. Ding Ding Ding Mewtwo-D2 is the winner! You are exactly right, every review of the film so far says that he protrays Socialized Medicare as the end all of our problems. It may even fix Global Warming and Iraq!

Nice little update on everything, Moore's movie is flopping at the box office, and he had a blow up on CNN, where his so called "Facts" were challenged.
