Thread: Japanese Names

Should they have kept some of the Japanese names? In my humble opinion, many of them were way cooler.

    i.e.:

    Boomanda > Salamence
    Bashamo > Blaziken
    Runpapa > Lucidolo
    Subame > Taillow
    Nukenin > Shedinja
    Asanan > Meditite
    Samehadaa > Sharpedo
    Furaigon > Flygon
    Shizarigar > Crawdaunt

    Just to name a few.

Powarun owns Castform, Castform sounds stupid.
    Patchiru, over Spinda, IMO
Bashamo over Blaziken, but I am unsure about this one. Oh well, all I can think of that you haven't named. Oh yeah, Gonin inst3ead of whismur

Most of them have the exact same meaning (they were pretty much direct translation...nukenin IS a combo of "ninja" and the japanese word for shed/cast off/molt)

So it doesn't matter what the name means, it's more a matter of just how cool it sounds to say. I think both Boomanda and Salamence sound extremely cool, as well as both Shizarigar and Crawdaunt (Shizarigar is a little more fun though) There actually aren't any english names I hate, though a few are kinda boring like Luvdisc.

I think Whismur is one of the coolest sounding names ever, personally.

Beautifly. I can't even think of that name without feeling angry and quezy. Utter lack of imagination and stupid, too. It made me like the name "Skitty"

Both sets of names have their ups and downs; at least when you look at them from an english point of view. Unless I really have to, I refuse to call Sneasel by it's english name, the Japanese Nyura was much better, and definitely more evil-sounding IMO!
On the other hand: Abra, Kadabra and Alakazam were called Casey Yungri/Hungri and Fudin/Foodin... which I always thought sounded pretty odd in english.

Scythemantis has a good point too, and if you know a little about the way the Japanese speak, a lot of the names aren't just translations, they're exactly the same as if you said them using Japanese phonemes (think of them as language pieces).
Go ahead, try it. Don't worry about being racist for a second, but say something like 'Flygon' with a Japanese accent; if you're used to talking to people whose original language is Japanese you know what I mean. The 'Fly' part comes out as 'Furai', and the 'gon' just stays - 'Furaigon'.
Another good example is 'Volbeat' - the Japanese name is something like 'Borubiito', the sound for 'v' comes out as a 'b' in Japanese; I had a friend who always used to call Vivi from FFIX 'Bibi'.

Ack, sorry about the rambling, it's been a long day o_O

Yeah, they should've kept Pikachu's Japanese name.

    ...Waitaminute...??

But in actuality, Kabigon > Snorlax, Myu > Mew, Kamex > Blastoise, etc. etc.

I prefer the English names in all but a few cases, the primary ones being:

    Nukenin > Shedinja
    Samehadaa > Sharpedo
    Furaigon > Flygon

Those aren't the only ones, though.

To me, Salamence is way niftier than Boomanda, and that's how I feel about a lot of the English to Japanese names.

I love the English language, though, so that's probably the main reason why. The only language I've had contact with -- including French, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and Spanish -- that comes close to it is Latin... And Latin is sort of dead!

Well, it's hard to think of a better "pun" name for a butterfly and beautifly. Is "butterfree" any more creative?

I'm also one of the few who likes the name sneasel. I think it fits, because the pokemon is supposed to be devious. Sneak + weasel (but I actually like how it comes out "sneeze"..I'm just weird probably)

Japanese. I always like originals, like Cardcaptor Sakura over Cardcaptors, and Ringu over The Ring... Hard to explain, but originals always seem better to me...

I like japanese names because they sound like a bit Turkish and a bit English.
