    Default Turnabout Blues (preview)

In the early 2000s, a new bill passed through each of the houses of the government that shook the judicial system to its very core. As prescribed by the bill, trials could only last a maximum of three days: this was done to raise the number of trials that could be heard in any given time period. Additionally, the defendant would begin to be assumed guilty until presumed innocent, in an effort to catch more of the criminals who slipped through the cracks. That wasn’t even the biggest change, though: under the new system, the jury system was totally abolished. In its place, each verdict would be decided purely by the judge, who would base his or her decision on how much the prosecution or the defense swayed him or her. This would theoretically eliminate all the time needed to allow a jury to unanimously agree on a verdict. As a side effect of trials being sped up, a defendant could theoretically go to trial less than two days after being arrested, thus making a defense attorney’s job significantly harder by practically forcing the attorney in question to conduct their own investigation. The year is now 200X, and this is the story of one such defense attorney and his client.

Ryker Solsby stands trial for the brutal murder of his chemistry professor. He had the motive...

"Mr. Solsby is what those in the know would call ‘just plain dumb’. He would say things like ‘He’s just picking on me,’ or ‘Man, I’m gonna fail this class because of him. That can’t happen.’"

    He had the weapon...

"Ryker’s fingerprints are all over this guitar. What’s even more damning is that nobody else’s fingerprints are."

    He had the opportunity...

"I d-definitely saw him that day. Ryker was, w-without a doubt, h-heading for Dr. Pyre's office. There was nobody else."

But is Ryker Solsby really guilty?

"I didn’t do anything! He was already dead when I got there! Please! I don’t want to go to jail!"

Join defense attorney Leo Black as he faces insurmountable odds, formidable foes, and dangerous secrets in the most mysterious case he's ever encountered.

(Yeah, so I'm doing an Ace Attorney-styled story. None of the same characters - I like to write my own - but I really dig the rules in place in the Ace Attorney games. They're more fun. Anyway, I'm working on this now, and I should be posting the first chapter out of five or six... I dunno... in not too long. Also, I'm assuming trailers are still allowed here. :B If not, my apologies.)

Trailers are definitely allowed here. Oooh... I've never even heard of the Ace Attorney games, but this sounds like an excellent premise for a fic. Guilty before proven innocent, in the timeframe of five days in total? Ouch. The period seems a bit off because it's 2008 already, and there's no way that cases will build up so quickly in two years that these measures will even be considered in two years' time, but otherwise it's a believable alternate universe. Good luck

Isn't 'Ace Attorney' another term for the Phoenix Wright series? They're pretty well-known (Though I haven't played them, 'cuz I'm fucking dirt-poor. )...

No, see, it's like in Megaman 2: The game is set in the year 200X. Same with I Wanna Be The Guy. Human robots and fruit falling upwards won't be available with Earth's technology for millennia. And since 'X' is the Roman numeral for '10,'then it's obvious that the games - and subsequently, the fic - in question take place in the year 20010. Thinking that 200X is a quadruple-digit year... That's a fairly common misinterpretation, y'see.

Anyway, on to being actually constructive here:

I don't read fics anymore, Jeff.

    But I'm intrigued.

Will Jeff be the man who makes me see the joy of reading again?

...Probably not. But I might check this fic out anyway. See ya when it's up (possibly)!

I haven't played the games your basing this on but I'm very intrigued. I love murder mystery style things I'm very much intrigued by this; the only concern I have is that there is too much lawyer jargon but I'm sure you'll ease us in no problem

    Looking forward!

I'd just like to point out that when a person is found guilty in the Ace Attorney games, he isn't automatically guilty and executed; he simply gets referred to a higher court which decides whether he is really innocent or guilty and then decides his punishment.

    Otherwise, it's looking good.

mistysakura: Yeah, alternate universes are what's going on here. ^^; I figured there'd be no way that it would actually happen at all in the US in the foreseeable future, and I didn't want to write something that takes place too far ahead. So alternate universe it was.

Blade: Yeah, I call 'em the Ace Attorney games 'cause the newest one isn't Phoenix Wright anymore. And hope to see ya there.

Chris: I don't think jargon will be too much of an issue when I'm done; I'm trying to explain what I think needs to be. Plus, I'm not a lawyer, so I can't get too deep in jargon myself.

Heald: I could have sworn that if your client is found guilty in the games, that that's the be all and end all, but if you manage to incriminate someone else, they get a different trial. Have I been misinterpreting things?

If you phail at AA, the judge prattles on about how the defendant will be taken into custody and will be sentenced by a higher court in a month's time.

Personally, I wanted to send Maya to the electric chair. She is the most useless piece of crap in the world. Plus, why would I want to try and find this pimp guilty of murder?:

My god, yes. By the time the third game rolled around, she'd been accused of murder SO MUCH that I just wanted her to actually have done it, just to shake things up.

Also, screw White, Gant's the pimpest guy in the game. Totally.

True, especially when he goes Super Saiyan:

Also, I do believe I have somewhat derailed this thread.

Gant freaking out is one of the best moments of any of the Ace Attorney games.

...okay I'm done helping the derailment now.
