I have a tattoo; it's about the length of a pen, and is an intricate, tribal design I actually drew myself. I went in and asked if they'd do a design I made myself, and the girl liked it, and a few weeks later I got it done.
People do raise an argument that tattoos can look samey and generic. I don't think getting a tattoo lies purely in the individualism of the design. People who get lip rings or eyebrow piercings are getting the same thing done. Heck someone right now is probably wearing a white ralph lauren polo with a pair of chocolate coloured cargo shorts and flips like I am. But the individualism argument is watered down since I made mine myself.
I think getting a tattoo is about the look in equal measures as it is about the feeling, the process, and the significance behind it.
I am quite anti-piercing though, which is weird.
