Default Official Fabula Nova Crystallis Compilation Info Thread

Fabula Nova Crystallis, for those of you who don't know (if that's anyone) is the name of the upcoming Compilation Squenix are doing, consisting of; Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Final Fantasy Agito XIII and something pretty much unknown called Final Fantasy Haeresis XIII.

I, being the little obsessive that I am, am following everything to do with these games pretty rabidly, so I thought it might be nice if I made a news thread and stuck up all the information as it comes out - there's some pretty interesting stuff in the lead-up to XIII's Japanese release - rather than just having various bits and bats pop up sporadically. And I know there's at least two people other than me who are vaguely interested in these games, so hopefully this'll be of some use.

So first up, obviously most of the info will be regarding FFXIII, cos Versus is only in development still, Agito is pretty much a big fat unknown except for the trailer, and Haeresis, well, I have no clue since it's mostly a rumour.

    - As of a few days ago, the European site for FFXIII got a major update - it now contains the full dubbed (7 minutes long) trailer in some pretty sweet quality, a pile of screenshots and character profiles for Lightning, Sahz, Snow and Vanille.
    - On the 13th of November, there is a HUGE announcement set for release. There's a big fat countdown timer on the European site, stating the the announcement will be at 3.30pm. The general consensus is that it'll be for the official EU release date, and the announcement will be in the form of a video.
    - More and more new pictures are being released by the day. The latest of these are high quality scans;
    1) Chocobos!! ZOMG!! Personally, I love the new design. Especially the little wing thingies on either side of their heads. Cute!
    2) Fang and Sazh

I'll post a new reply every time something's updated (if that's okay, Roy?), and especially regarding the special announcement on Friday!

EDIT: pretty much all news is sourced from ffxii.net and playstation lifestyle. So thanks to those guys who work super hard getting scans and translations for us.

I can't wait for this game to come out. I am gonna have to stick my head in the sand once it comes out in Japan because I wanna play this game as pure as possible with no spoilers.

    Updates! New scans from Famitsu.

    More Chocobos!
    Scenery
    More scenery
The new level-up system is called Crystarium (no surprise that they're sticking with the crystal theme here), and it looks pretty suave. I quite like the metallic finish to the thing.
Alexander summon! I like Alexander, he always looks so mechanical. This one shows that he's Hope's summon (I think they're calling them Eidolons).

I hope they're going to keep what seems to be unique summons for each character - that'll be something we've not really seen in a FF game yet, with them usually being reserved for Summoners or like the GFs in VIII.

And finally, as far as European release goes, Wada states that the finishing touches are being added to the western release, so hopefully the date'll be sometime around April 2010.

I agree, Pants. It's gonna be so annoying, seeing all the spoilery stuff around and not being able to play it! First I need a PS3, however...

Is it wrong to hold out hope, any sliver of hope that they just say "Screw it we are doing a Worldwide release in December?" It would make this crappy Holiday Game season ALOT better.

You are doing a awesome job Weasel ^^ I do want to mention that the new trailer premiering along with everything else in Friday's presser will be shown in Playstation Home. I am half tempted to dust off the old sucker and watch it live.

Ah curse you Roy, you stole my news! Lol, it's okay, I don't mind. It would be really nice if we had embedding functions here, so I could embed trailers. D: But alas.

Is everyone happy with me just linking to the pics? I think I might do a sample pic with each news post to make things a bit more interesting. ^_^

OH also, since I personally don't want any spoilers for XIII, and I know Pants doesn't either, once it's released in Japan, I'll be stopping the news/scans from Japan (except to find a review and see what people say) and focusing on the rest of the compilation, and the Western release of XIII.

Also: omg how hot is Oerba Yun Fang?! (the dark haired woman with Bahamut) Phwoar.

The release date for the US and Europe has been annouced as March 9th. I was expecting it sometime in late spring to account for Xbox development time so this is pretty awesome I think.

Ooh thanks Pants! I got that in an email this morning, but I've not had chance to come on and post it. I'm so chuffed about this, cos my birthday is like, the 4th. BIRTHDAY PRESENT HERE I COME!

EDIT: FOR SOME FUCKING BAD NEWS Leona Lewis is doing the theme for the European release. It's called My Hands, and the clip I heard was absolutely dreadful. I am actually fuming about this. Final Fantasy has never done a vocal song that I've disliked until now. Good work, XIII. *scowls*

GAH PNT! I purposly waited on this because I knew Wease would kill me if I said something first!

Anyway this kind of sucks for me because its about a month away from my Birthday and well... I CAN'T WAIT FOR IT! Otherwise the video shown today with all the columns and interviews was pretty awesome.

Also I don't know if it has been noted but it looks like the 360 version will have 3 - 4 disks, so those with a 360 will get that old school PS1 Final Fantasy experience as they play it XD

Slightly delayed - oopsie. The final trailer for FFXIII will be released on Wednesday the 25th of November. And you can see the countdown on the official website. There's been a new promo poster released, along with various other new screencaps, detailing mostly outside environments, which look lush and absolutely gorgeous in design. Xbox users are in for a treat again, with the announcement through twitter that if you:

"Retweet this message to help unlock an exclusive Xbox LIVE item for Final Fantasy XIII" #FFXIIIXBOX http://xbox.com/ffxiii

No idea what the item is, but it might be nice, eh?

    FLAN!
    Just beautiful.
Some things that look like Movers, along with one of the Colossi from Shadow of the Colossus. o.O
Mr Cool Alexander looking more like a golem than ever.
    Urr a tree trunk.
Again with the Shadow of the Colossus-ness
    Cave-like area
    Nice and indoorsy
Such pretty colours! Reminiscent of FFX, I think.
    Random NPCs
    Esthar?!
    Wheee, explosions!
Battling some more, and some more, and some more.
    Party menu?
ALEXANDER! He's so cool! And so is Hope, his summoner.
    Cactuars - Famitsu scans.

And the last slew of Famitsu screenshots that we'll be getting until the official game review. Editing them in once they've uploaded.

IT IS OuT! Launching yesterday with 1.8 million copies in Japan, FFXIII is finally out, and thus the opening pre game video is now out, its nothing more than a collection of CGI clips from the game, but it is worth a look

Okay, since the game's officially out now in Japan, I'm going to refrain from posting any more screencaps or pictures. Someone else can take over if you like, but I really don't want any spoilers (tbh the pictures of the menus and the level-up system were a bit too far into spoilery for my liking ^_^;; )

Anyway! More news, hehe. It's been announced (finally!) that there IS going to be a special collector's edition for the European version. Assuming that the same goes for US too - I can't imagine that it wouldn't. No details have been released yet about what's going to be IN the collector's edition, but suffice it to say, I am buying it.

Some costumes and things for your space in PlayStation Home have been released on the Japan!Home - my bf checked it out today, however, and they ARE to be paid for. And sort of rubbish-looking too, but hey.

And finally from me; Square have made a special site for the soundtrack, here. It contains previews of ten tracks from the soundtrack, all by the composer, Masashi Hamauzu. Personally, I don't know who this guy is, and I'm sort of disappointed it's not Uematsu or Sakimoto, but hey. I can't give an opinion on the tracks, cos I never listen to soundtracks out of context, before I've played a game.

For any spoilerwhores out there; there's a video been released of someone playing the game in fairly high quality. It's a full playthrough stream, and I assume it's still going, or that you can start watching it at any time. Go here for the video.

NEWS UPDATE! And not for FFXIII for once! ZOUNDS! (Hence the double-posting - different topic XD)

Jump Festa was on sometime in the past week (I forget the precise day), and they released some stuff about Versus XIII.

Namely; there was a short trailer shown, where Noctis gets into a car and speeds away down a road. The trailer ends with some words, "Revelation will come next time," which looks very promising for the upcoming future. The short trailer consisted, also, of gameplay (squee!), and apparently had gorgeous lighting, as well as it being in realtime, which sounds pretty cool.

I'll update as soon as a version of the trailer leaks out somewhere.

Sorry guys, still no sign of the Versus XIII Festa trailer. Not to worry though, cos here's some good news for you American fans! *grumbles under breath*

Squenix are launching a bus tour in America, starting on the 13th of January (that's TODAY!) in San Francisco. It'll be travelling around San Francisco and the Bay Area until the 16th, and you'll have the opportunity to play the first brand new English demo of FFXIII! Lucky buggers. The stops will be tweeted here.

EDIT: And for those of you wondering where the hell the updates have gone, well, I'm not willing to get spoilers. So the only updates from now til release will be about the EU/US release and non-spoilery things. I'm hoping for some news on the special edition and preorder pack, already. I needs me my preorder!

    Linkity link

To go with the trailer: the news that the English development is FINALLY complete. Hurrah!

Nice little spoiler free tid bit I caught. Apparently an entire games worth of content was cut from the game. If that much was cut it's crazy to think how much is left.

It's true; the content cut was things like entire places. Conspiracy theories are saying that the content was all cut to accommodate for the 360 version; that the development of the game was purposefully hampered so it would fit on the Xbox. Not sure what I think about that.

In other news, the game fills 40GB of a blu-ray disc. 32.6GB is reserved for the cut-scenes, making only 6.8GB for the actual in-game stuff. Sounds fairly impressive, I've gotta say. The only game nearing this is Metal Gear Solid 4.

Well part of that has gotta be that companies don't really compress PS3 data because it helps prevent piracy. The game is suppose to be on 3 discs for 360 so that would be 27 gigs tops for that version of the game.

I think people who think all that stuff was cut out because the Xbox version is coming out are idiots. There are two reasons why that much stuff was cut out. Every game leaves a ton of stuff on the cutting room floor, the bigger the game the more cut out. Secondly the game has had a very troubled development cycle so more things than usual may have been scraped.

Yeah, people don't seem to take into account the editing process. It's silly, really.

Anyway, new updates! First English review's been seen in the Playstation Magazine. They gave the game 9/10, which is a pretty dandy review. I'd take them more seriously, however, if they didn't make such ridiculously blatant and stupid mistakes on their "timeline." I'm uploading the scans from the magazine right now, and I'll post them up once they're done. There's also some feature scans, with characters, Eidolons and whatnot. Stay tuned! I'll edit them in.

    Playstation Magazine review;

    Feature;

I've been trying my hardest to stay away from spoilers, so I don't actually know anyone who's played it, or what anyone other than these magazine reviews thinks, alas.

Some news (finally!) on what the EU Special Edition is going to be. Awesome, is the word I'd use. But I'm biased, so decide for yourselves. It will contain:

    - FFXIII Official Sound Collection: a small CD containing some specially selected songs from the soundtrack. It'll be in a case with artwork on, and comes with notes from the composer.
    - The World of FFXIII book: a hardback book with character artwork, CGs and environmental images, and various other pictures from across production. This is what I'm the most excited about. An artbook is guaranteed to make me buy the Special Edition of any game. XD
    - Exclusive Art Prints: 3 of them, containing artwork of the Eidolons. Awesome! They're highly collectable, apparently.
    - And a unique "Brand of the l'Cie" decal: looks like it's a sticker or something. Possibly for on the console? Sounds cool either way.

Another tidbit of news: the composer for FFXIII, Masashi Hamazau is leaving SE. That makes two now, with Nobuo, and apparently a lot of other main composers are set to be leaving in the near future. What have SE done to drive away their composers?!

Another review has emerged, this one of an import (again) from Play magazine. The game got 79%, which is the lowest score we've seen so far, I think. Scans below, credit of ffxiii.net's awesome scanners. (Scans from previous post also uploaded - check them out!)

    EDIT: LOOK, YOUTUBE EMBEDDING.

EDITEDIT: Someone on lj posted up their review. I'm not reading it, but here's a link if you can get into it, and anyone's interested.

Some more rumours and titbits (that I tried to post last night, but my laptop froze on me D: )

    - Xbox version is pretty much confirmed to be on 3 discs now.
    - The back of the Xbox version also confirms that there WILL be DLC coming - it has the words "content downloaded" writ upon it.
    - And there has been a list of characters names, ages, etc. released, along with some more ultimania scans of them (the artwork's nothing different, so I won't bother posting it).

    Lightning - Age: 21 Height: 171cm
    Snow - Age: 21 Height: 200cm
    Vanille - Age: 19 Height: 161cm
Sazh - Age: 40 Height: 189cm (including afro)
    Hope - Age: 14 Height: 153cm
    Fang - Age: 21 Height: 175cm
    Serah - Age: 18 Height: 164cm
Dajh - Age: 6 Height: 117cm (including afro)
    Nora - Height: 163cm
    Bartholomew - Height: 178cm
    Gadot - Age: 21 Height: 192cm
    Lebreau - Age: 19 Height: 168cm
    Maqui - Age: 17 Height: 162cm
    Yuj - Age: 19 Height: 181cm
    Galenth - Height: 185cm
    Cid - Height: 199cm
    Yaag - Height: 190cm
    Jihl - Height: 166cm (176cm with heels)
    Rygdea - Height: 180cm
    Amodar - Height: 186cm

What do you guys think of the English trailer? It's lovely, but the song ruins it for me. D: I really hope the song's not gonna be refrained all the way through the game, although I can't see that happening, cos they'd have to change the soundtrack for it. [/ramble]

EDIT: News just in!! FFXIII will NOT have an install on the PS3. It'll run directly from the disc. This could be good news, depending on the sheer size of the game, or bad news, depending on the load times. Here's hoping it won't do a Bayonetta and have ridiculous loading times, leading to Squenix needing to release a patch for it!

Get to beat Weasel in this, the FFXIII bundle has been confirmed by Microsoft it will weigh in at $400 US, contain a 250 Gig Hard drive, 2 Controllers, the "Standard" edition of the game, a exclusive FF XIII face plate, a exclusive FF XIII Hard Drive, and Exclusive Downloadable Content for the game!

Pictures of the package can be found here.

The DLC seems to be avatar items, but why stress a Standard Version if NA is not getting a Limited Edition? Hmmmm

That's right, the new title tells alllll! Now that FFXIII is all complete and shiny, it's been reported that Versus XIII is really picking up pace. Rumour goes that it's slated for a Spring 2010 release, although I dunno, that seems sort of unlikely. Unless they're REALLY gonna speed through things. I'm dubious about the Spring release part, but super excited about development picking up.

An addition to Roy's point: they're going to start selling the FFXIII faceplate for the Xbox, in limited quantities, of course, as a separate item. It'll be available with the game's release on the 9th of March.

There's a possibility that FFXIII could be released in 3D sometime in the future, according to Yoshinori Kitase. They're interested in doing it, and they've already made a 3D trailer, which is shown alongside Avatar, in Japan cinemas only.

Aaaand finally, for the Americans among us (ie: the rest of you) - Squenix are sponsoring the 2010 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, held in Dallas. There'll also be a special area where people can go to try out the game. This is oh, haha, today, the 12th of February, at 6pm CST.

The faceplate doesn't come in the bundle. It says it's an unbranded Xbox. The faceplate while have to be gotten extra.

So here's the first American trailer. Urm, I think it was shown at that NBA thing? Either way, it's for the Xbox, and is pretty short and crappy really, but hey, extra bits I guess. Enjoy?

A quick post (again). Kitase has posted in reply to all those retarded people bitching about the cut content, and after the whole hoohah with them using the Xbox screens with slightly changed buttons for an advert, I guess he sort of needed to make a statement.

The things that were cut either didn’t make sense in the storyline, would slow down the pace of the game or were otherwise unnecessary.
There is no plan for these things that were cut — because they weren’t essential to the game — to be revived as downloadable content.
Just stating the obvious there, but still. People shouldn't need to be told that cut content was cut in the editing room, of course it is. They'd complain if they gota sub-par game with loads of draggy bits and bits that didn't fit with the plot. People don't go after authors, howling for extra content that they cut from their novels, do they? No, cos it'd be shite.

Sorry, that type of attitude just really pisses me off. Bloody spoilt entitled DLC gamers.

Just got the game, in the US if you go to Target you get a 10 dollar gift card if you buy the game, that is the best offer I have seen so far. Also inside the game is a code for Square Enix Members I would suggest you do not waste any time and put the code in immediately, it puts you into the beta for FF14 on the PS3!

    Slight Spoiler Warning

So I am almost through with the game, and I have to admit I am pretty disappointed, both with the extreme linear structure, and with how they seemingly dropped the ball in the second half. The first half of the game on Cacoon, I have to say is amazing its classic Final Fantasy Story telling and characters, and it makes up for one of the best Next Gen RPG experiences I had.

Its when you get to Gran Pulse things seem to fall apart, amazing Character Development seemingly grinds to a halt like every character just hit a brick wall in development, with very few if anything coming out after that. Not to mention Gran Pulse isnt... that Grand. The opening part of it feels like you are in a much, much larger world. Like you finally have come to a end on your linear route, and now you truly have a world to explore. That lasts all of 1 level, and then it is back on the beaten path again.

You also spend very little time on Gran Pulse, it feels more like a side trip than a actual world, and really the entire environment could have been used as part of Cacoon and I probably would have been happier as atleast you would have been able to explore more of Cacoon.

It seems, like they had a amazing first half of the game, filled with intrigue, wonderful characters, amazing stories, amazing emotion. And then its as if the writers went "Fuck it" and handed it all off to a less skilled team that decided to focus almost entirely on the story with a villain that seems very... FFXish, and absolutely nothing on the characters who had been on a amazing journey so far.

Anyone else feeling the same way?

I haven't said anything in this topic since the game has been released because I gave up my video game consoles for lent. That all ends at sundown tonight, so as soon as I get off work I am coming home and playing the hell out of this game.

Just beat the game tonight. I must say I agree with you Roy when it comes to the story. I was really drawn into it, but once everyone leaves for pulse I just wanted to throw something at the TV every cut scene. The whole game from that point was just "Lets do it..... together!!!" X10000

I must say the battles get 10 times more awesome once you reach that point in the game, and now that I've beaten it I am looking forward to doing all the missions.

Hey all! After a long absence, we've finally got some news about more Fabula Nova stuff! And some very juicy news it is too; namely in the form of a few gorgeous screencaps from Famitsu and some yummy translated interviews.

The whole of this post is secondary-sourced from []ff_xiii @ lj

    First up: Versus XIII

Is this a real-time screenshot we’re looking? The image quality is very good.
Yes it’s an image in real-time using the real hardware. We aim to improve the quality you’re seeing now even further. As of now we can’t share more details in full scale right now, so we removed the menus and subscreens where it shows Noctis expression (image projected on the subscreen).

Were the party members also there originally?
Yes, we removed because we haven’t formally announced their weapons and clothes yet.

The exquisiteness and shades are like a photograph taken from real life.
Indeed, we’re using physical calculations to determine the movement of the clouds. By this time it allow us to filter sunlight and others on Versus XIII.

Is the cliff to the wilderness & the Gas Station set in the same location?
Yes in the back of the Store is the cliff to the extended wilderness. You can walk all the way, to everything you see but the mountains.

What’s this giant Enemy on the other screen?
It’s a Military Behemoth and he actually bears a huge sword in his back. As for this pictures, the battle screen were on the screen but we omitted it.

The street of Shinjuku is real.
Yes, it’s our model for this, even the bicycle lanes and crosswalks are decipted. But the sense of distance has been changed a bit since the last time. Right out of the city you encounter the wilderness with electric wires every as it’s this kind of territory for this country.

This region, It is only the Prologue, the early stages, nature is so even there.
Movement around this area is easy because you can use a car. Getting on and off the car can be done anytime, but only not possible to go all the way through it because it leads to a region underwater that has been shown on promotional trailers before.

    Monsters appear on the field?
(Laughter)…Yes, there are monsters that appear on the field; Some staff were doing the tests and were surprised by how good looking some are in the evening sun.

Are the battles seamless, what about the world?
It’s basically seamless and we aim to make it even more seamless, but there are loadings between big areas.

Information disclosure, is very restrict as of now.
Development is very advanced along and according to expectations we’re taking steady steps; wait at ease please, information on Versus XIII will come. Moreover, we’re making preparations for a Big announcement.

You can actually see a signboard and things written inside in the screenshot?
The signboard is still temporary even though the inside of the Gas Station is modeled after the Stations in the US in detail. It’s possible to go up there using the stairs.

Do you play in this perspective the whole game?
Yes. The camera basically sits in this position. We decided to priority to the character’s presence and the world; that said we decided to scrap the over the shoulder perspective of the world.

    FF Agito XIII

Square Enix's Hajime Tabata is likely to be busy over the next few months as The 3rd Birthday approaches its Winter release.

But, simultaneous with the Parasite Eve followup, Tabata is also directing another major PSP title, Final Fantasy Agito XIII. While development on this is trailing The 3rd Birthday, Tabata wasn't too shy to answer a few questions in a recent interview conducted in Dengeki PlayStation.

Asked for a status update on the game's production, Tabata said "The 3rd Birthday takes priority, but development is still steadily progressing. I believe it will be an FF that differs from the image fans have."

Asked what this means, he responded, "We're making it into a game where you can feel the true pain and weight as a war story. Because it has some harsh portrayals, Kitase (producer Yoshinori Kitase) is freqently making checks.

Kitase chimed in here with some further explanation: "There are parts where you see a soldier burned and falling over after being struck by fire. Initially, I warned them to not go too far in their expressions, but now I'm telling them to do whatever they want."

Closing off this little tease, Tabata said: "It's a full spec Final Fantasy that's multiplayer and can be played on the PSP. Please anticipate it greatly."

As for my own views on FFXIII, well, I loved it. I'm afraid I have to completely disagree with you guys on most of your complaints, lol. Especially the ending, I thought it was brilliant. I really love the addition of a semi-New Game+ too, although it did sort of take a little of the replayability out of it, for me. But oh well, I tend to dislike the beginnings of FFs on replays anyway. I'm looking at you, Midgar. -_-
