Ahhh, a beyootiful day here plum in the middle of nowhere. As I recline and soak in some of the rays in hopes of working on my summer tan, I spy two trainers plodding their way toward me with the fire of competition burning in their eyes. Ho boy, even better! It’s a battle, guys!

Dabsaww will be facing off against Ayeun. I’ve reffed both these guys before and I know as well as anyone that they’re hardcore. :O In demonstration of their hardcore-ness, Ayeun quickly releases her battler, a top-heavy posy with a rather vacant expression. In reply, Dabsaww sends out his shimmering blue Electrike. Much like their trainers, Sway and Neutron seem ready to tear into one another… and who am I to stop them?

Neutron is the first to move. Icy energy suffuses his teeth as he gnashes into Sway’s lean body. The little flower lets out a moan of pain, but isn’t ready to give in. The Ice Fang gives Sway the perfect opportunity to launch a close-range Sleep Powder which has zero chance of failure from this proximity. With that, the little thunder doggy finds his eyelids growing strangely heavy and he tumbles over, out like a light. Sway raises her leaves to the air in triumph. Hooray!

As Neutron counts some z’s, Sway is free to have her way with him. Instead, she closes her eyes and opens herself to the sunlight. Her leaves suddenly seem greener and her movements all the more agile. This Bellsprout is ready to kick some behind!

Sway: <-4 EP; +1 SpA>

Finally, as Neutron still sleeps his way through the battle, Sway is ready. She jerks her vines harshly and smacks the sleeping doggy with as much effort as she can manage. Battered and cut up, the doggy rolls over and… nothing. He continues to sleep. Must be nice.

As Neutron slumbers away, the little green mutt begins to mutter something in his sleep. The noises sound strangely like… an incantation? Whether it’s good or bad will remain to be seen. Sway counters by spewing a glob of some steaming purple liquid at Neutron. The liquid bubbles as it strikes the Electrike, though its effects seem negligible.

Neutron: <-5 EP; -1 Spd; +1 Att; +1 Def; Zzz>
Sway: <-4 EP>

Again, Neutron mutters something and then, without warning, begins to spew crackling beams of electric current everywhere! The attack strikes the Bellsprout, though her advantageous typing keeps the move from dealing too much damage. She counters by releases a volley of shimmering leaves that arc through the air before slicing Neutron up. Ouchies.

Neutron: <-7 HP; -4 EP; Zzz>
Sway: <-3 HP; -4 EP>

In the wake of that last attack, Neutron suddenly hops to his feet, completely awake. Yippee! He releases another onslaught of electricity that sizzles as it bakes the Bellsprout alive, causing her to lose muscle control. Er, wait, what’s the Bellsprout equivalent of muscles? Tendrils? Still, despite this, she releases a glob of bubbling noxious gunk that splatters Neutron in the face. As the goo osmoses into his skin, he begins to feel ill. Ewies.

These two combatants are both the luckiest and the unluckiest Pokemon at there.

As things heat up, Neutron makes some time for a little tenderness. He raises a brow and parts his lips, making some kind of hideous R. Patz-like pouty face. It’s kind of repulsive, really, but Sway doesn’t seem to mind; in fact, she seems a little enamoured. Still, she nonetheless keeps her head in the game enough to waltz over and emit a nice little cloud of white powder.

We’ve seen this before, folks. Out like a light.

While Neutron sleeps, Sway recognizes this as the perfect moment to set up a little one-two punch strategy beginning with a Sunny Day. The thing is, her Paralysis really seems to disagree with this plan and she locks up before she can command the clouds to part. Damn.

Sway: <Paralysis!>

Neutron rolls over in his sleep and, though the Sunny Day was a fail on Sway’s part, she nonetheless sticks with the plan and begins to absorb sunlight. Because the sunlight is only at medium strength, this is going to take a moment…

Sway: <Charging…>

Neutron grimaces as the poison does what it does best. <-3 HP>

Anyway, I took an extra 3 HP from him in addition to poison's regular effects for this round, so all is well. And just in case you're about to ask... yes, statuses can overlap, so it's indeed possible to be both poisoned and asleep.

In the middle of his sleep, Neutron suddenly leaps up and begins mumbling ostensible gibberish. Suddenly, he bares he teeth and somehow manages to navigate his way over to Sway with his eyes closed! Wow, this pup’s good! Sway looks at the Electrike with affection even as he rips into her, gnashing his teeth against her lean frame. Love hurts sometimes. Suddenly, once she feels as though she’s collected an adequate amount of sunlight, Sway unleashes it all in a concentrated beam that hurls Neutron back. Ouchies.

Neutron: <-14 HP; -3 EP; Zzz>
Sway: <-7 HP; -11 EP>

Feeling awful about her SolarBeam, Sway decides enough is enough and merely sits down in the grass and admires the object of her affection. Neutron has a clear attack and begins Charging up electric current. Live and let live, I guess?

Neutron: <Charging…; Zzz>
Sway: <Lalala…>

Once more, the babbling begins, and, bristling with electric current, Neutron unleashes it all in a souped-up Thunderbolt! The move deals boosted damage, frying the Bellsprout up something nasty, but Sway is resilient and unleashes a duo of sharp-pointed leaves that leave identical furrows down Neutron’s side.

The round begins with Neutron hopping to his feet, awake at last. Huzzah! The spirited thunder doggy begins by breathing a hot trail of flames at Sway, who wilts under the attack’s influence. Aww, man. In response, she spews a volley of wee little seedies that smack Neutron in the face.

Growling as the onslaught of seeds comes to an end, Neutron opens his mouth and out come several razor-sharp little energy stars. Each individual star strikes Sway with impressive accuracy, but the Bellsprout opens her mouth to shoot out an explosive seed barrage and… nothing. Oh, paralysis, you are a wicked foe.

Sway: <-5 HP; Paralysis!>

Chortling, Neutron shows his glee with a wide open-mouthed grin. Suddenly, those pearly whites begin crackling with fire and, oh yes, the Fire Fang is not far behind. His teeth gnash into Sway, who interprets the attack as a kiss and subsequently swoons… even as she lies there, in the Electrike’s flaming mouth, burning up right before our eyes. That’s, uh, dedication.

Right from Neutron’s mouth, a huge spurt of crackling orange flames jets across the battlefield. They strike Sway and sear her delicate frame, but she holds steadfast… so steadfast, in fact, that she’s literally rooted herself in the soil! Fancy that!

Here it comes again. The Electrike gives the Flamethrower another go and, though the move hurts, Sway nonetheless braces herself against it. As she does so, she reaches out one of her leaves and taps Neutron on the snout with it. Just like that, Sway soaks up some energy and vitality right out of the little thunder doggy. Suddenly, those scorch marks are a little less painful!

Neutron: <-9 HP; -7 EP>
Sway: <-13 HP; +4 HP; -7 EP>

Rinse and repeat. Neutron gushes hot flames all over Sway, who offsets some of the damage with a second Giga Drain. She blinks, stunned; woah, did she just bypass both Paralysis and Attract?

Oh boy. This, my friends, is the very picture of a nail-biter.
