OK, let's see what we can do...

Explain that we're travellers, and we were interested in the local area and we were quite interested by the kidnappings. Explain that from where we come from, it is considered quite natural to ask to fight as a form of apology, it tests battling skills. We also didn't know that this psyduck had such a high status.

Once you finish explaining yourself, you peer around the crowd to see if they buy it. The Psyduck doesn't seem ready to take your explanation, but Officer Duns seems satisfied.

"You best be moving along now, though," Officer Duns says. "While I understand you're interested with what's been going on, I assure you it's a serious matter and both the mayoral office and my department--"

"Not to mention the North Skyline Terrace Homeowners' Association!" Mortimer Q. Psyduck chimes in.

"Uh, yes, right," Officer Duns continues, rolling her eyes. "Anyway, I advise you retire for the evening unless you intend on reigniting suspicion."

Suddenly, you remember that Rebecca will be expecting you at the mayoral office.

You chipperly deposit the breakfast in a nearby trashbin as you make your way to the mayor's office. (Poor, culinarily-challenged Jimmy.) You, Ectabat and Gulliver find the building again without much difficulty. Upon your entrance, you see a Finneon behind a reception counter.

"Good morning!" she chimes. You see her nametag reads "Nadine Finnegan". "Can I help you? Do you have an appointment with Mayor Ambipom?"

Suddenly, a Mr. Mime pushing along a bucket of mop-water brushes past you.

    "Sorry, sir," he mumbles.

    ‡ Round 24 ‡

You ask for a townguide, of which they appear to have none.

"We do have little stickers advertising our Butternut Squash Festival that's coming up in a few days," Nadine says chipperly. Using Psychic, she levitates a wee little stickie over to Ectabat and places it right on her forehead. "Aww, now aren't you darling? Rebecca can be found just down that hallway. Second door on the right.

You walk down a short hallway, one of the two in the entire office. On your right, you pass a janitorial closet... on your left, a door marked Public Relations... on your right... ooh, a door marked Administration. The last door is, of course, Mayor Ambipom's, though you decide not to head into there.

As you step into the Administration office, you look upon the mess surrounding you. Rebecca and two other Bidoofs are bouncing about, answering phonecalls and sending faxes left and right. When Rebecca spots you, she peers at you flatly.

"Lefty, Peppercorn," she says, addressing the other aides, "I'll be back shortly. I have some business to tend to."

She then grabs you by the elbow and whisks you back to the lobby and down another hallway into what appears to be the office break room. As you pass reception, you see that the three Ditto chimneysweeps from yesterday have entered the mayoral office and are talking with Nadine now.

"Listen, I know you mean well, but we can't have any repeats of what happened last night. I'm confident you're not behind the Pokenappings, but you'll have all of Skyline Terrace after you if you're not careful. Now, listen, I'll be terse... I found a communique in the lobby garbage just a few days ago shortly after Tim and Tom were taken. They're Spinda twins and were the second of the Pokenappings." She holds up a letter. "I don't know who it's addressed to, but it's from someone saying they're pleased that the operation went smoothly and that the next assignment will be pending. I'm worried that one of my colleagues might be behind everything."

    Rebecca then appears at Ectabat.

"And get that ridiculous sticker off your head," she adds.

Rebecca agrees to let you have a copy of the letter and scurries off to the Administration office to use the photocopier. You, Ectabat and Gulliver chill in the break room, but you can hear the conversation the Dittos are having with the receptionist.

"Now, Nigel, Rupert, Clive," Nadine says patiently, "you're going to have to address me one-by-one if I'm to understand what the problem is."

"The issue, m'dear," one of the Dittos says icily, "is that the city has contracted us to fix Mr. and Mrs. Venomoth's chimney, but we're going to have to be paid extra if you expect us to go through with the job!"

"Supplies, additional labour... I mean, we're chimney-sweeps, not masons! You're crazy for expecting us to do this without additional compensation!" another Ditto barks.

"So on behalf of Ditto Chimney Sweeps Labour Union #262, we're lodging an official complaint," the third adds.

"Mmhmm, yes, and that union is the three of you?" Nadine asks.

    "Aye," they reply in unison.

"Right, well, I'll pass your concerns onto Mayor Ambipom, but it'll be difficult allocating the funds. I was hoping... I mean, you're aware that Mr. and Mrs. Venomoth were to the first to have their children abducted, yes? All four of them?"

"Not our problem," one of the Dittos replies. "If the crook decided to decimate the chimney on their way down, it doesn't concern us. Extra money or we're not doing it."

"Weird that the Pokenapper leveled the first chimney while shimmying down it, but not the chimney of any of the other victims," another Ditto speculates. "Almost as if the other three Pokenappings were--"

"Well, unless you have anything else to add, I believe we're done here?" Nadine asks pleasantly. "Mayor Ambipom will be made aware of your concerns."

Suddenly, Rebecca returns with the photocopy in hand.

Anyway, before I study that, I'll ask both Ditto Chimney Sweeps Labour Union #262 and Rebecca about what decimated the roof over at Mr. and Mrs. Venomoths house.

You accept the communique from Rebecca and scurry off to find the Dittos. You see that they've left already, but you hurry out the door and catch them walking down the front steps of the building. You ask them what could've possibly decimated the chimney.

"Ooh, you're a nosy boy," one of them notes.

"Well, it was clearly the Pokenapper, wasn't it?" another asks. "It had to be. The Venomoths woke up one morning with four missing Venonats and a chimney in ruins. How hard is it to slide down a chimney without breaking it, anyway?"

"Easy for you to say. You're tiny and made of rubber, you dolt," the first one responds.

"But what I still don't get," the third one says, "is why the Venomoths' chimney was busted while the chimneys belonging to the Spindas, Furrets and Sudowoodos were left intact!"

How badly decimated was is? Was it fire damage, damage simply because the culprit was too large? Also, how come only the first one made any form of damage? Diversion strategy? Also, I'll read the letter in detail, looking for any insignia etc.

    ‡ Round 27 ‡

You ask the Dittos what kind of damage the Venomoths' chimney incurred.

"Just... crumbling and stuff," one of the Dittos replies. "It was like someone had tried to fit something the size of a wheelbarrow down a hole the size of a... um..."

"Slightly smaller wheelbarrow," another Ditto supplies.

They nod in agreement, but can't supply any answer as to why this only happened to one of the chimneys. As such, they depart from the front step of the mayoral office, leaving you to examine the photocopy Rebecca made. The original letter, you realize, had been ripped to shreds, though Rebecca seems to have been able to glue those pieces together. However, the two most vital parts of the letter—the addressee and the sender—were not recovered.

    The letter reads as follows:

I'm pleased with your work with the Spindas. They woke up not long after you handed them off to me, but I was able to put them back to Sleep. They're currently in my cellar where they won't be found. The others will follow shortly. I'm glad you were able to have a better go with the chimney than I did, but remember to clean yourself after with a Water-type move. I don't want you tracking soot everywhere.

You will then wait a week before abducting the children of Mr. and Mrs. O'Furr. Once you nab their Sentret children, you will wait two nights before abducting Mr. and Mrs. Sudowoodo's son and then one more night before taking the children of Mr. and Mrs. Psyduck. While I enjoy that we'll be able to get back at Mortimer for all his years of being a pest, the fact that he has sway within the community will be invaluable to the plan.

    More instructions will follow.

    Love,

The rest was torn away. The letter, you realize, is printed with a Kangaskhan letterhead.

Rebecca appears behind you looking concerned. "We need to warn Mortimer and his wife," she says. "They have two daughters. But... listen, all I know is an Ambipom can easily fit down a chimney if it wants to. Do you think we should do some snooping at the mayor's house?" She hesitates. "Oh, I feel so bad for dumping all this on you. I'd have taken this letter to Officer Duns the moment I found it, but she and Mayor Ambipom have been friends since they were kids. I can't trust her to run an investigation against him."

Well, we need to protect Mortimer, that's for sure. Also, we have a Kangaskhan letterhead, and a very suspicious mayor.

I'm gonna send Ectabat to guard the Mortimers house at a distance. I want him to explain the situation, and if he rejects help, then to protect the house at a distance. I'm also going to mentally note that the kidnappers find Mortimer annoying.

I'm also going to go to a tourist centre to pick up several town maps with Gulliver, whilst I'll ask Rebecca if any Hypno or Kangaskhan live in the area.

As you send off Ectabat toward Mortimer Q. Psyduck's house, you try to head off toward a tourist center, but Rebecca pauses.

"I'm sorry, but I can't come with you," she says. "I'm at work right now. Shorty and Peppercorn are going to wonder where I've gone. And no, there aren't any Kangaskhans or Hypnos in Skyline Terrace. I wouldn't focus too much on the letterhead, though... I use a Happiny letterhead while my colleagues use Pikachu and Jirachi stationeries respectively. It's just kind of random."

You then depart from the mayoral office and find the nearest tourist center. Behind the counter is a bored and impatient looking Lickitung. You remember seeing him at The Surly Miltank last night. He hands you a town guide, which comes to ten Pokedollars. When you tell him you have none, he snatches it back out of your hands.

"Then you don't get one!" he growls, rolling his eyes. "What do you think I am? A charity?"

You seem understandably surprised that a tourist center would charge for maps. The Lickitung notes your surprise and scowls.

"Hey, kid, don't judge. I hafta pay for my rent somehow," he spits.

The temple, glistening white and adorned with heavy Corinthian columns, comprises the majority of this land. On the outskirts of the temple but still within the Plateau's gated interior, many a fruit tree and manicured hedge adorn the lush grass.

A Tropius with injured wings seems to be straining to reach one of the fruits on a tree's high branches. Nearby, a Nidoking and Nidoqueen bash their heads together in aggressive combat. You also see a small shape slip in through the grand temple doors.

    How do you proceed?

    > Assist the Tropius
    > Observe the Nidoking and Nidoqueen
    > Enter the temple

A strange, mysterious temple set high in the sky. You can only enter the road to the temple by releasing the seal chanted by the ancients long ago. There are two shrines, one in Sunshine plains, and one in Grave's Yard. They are inconspicuous, the Grave's Yard shrine is a maouselum of sorts. Here, you will find exceptionally strong Pokemon in the various rooms and spaces of this ancient land set high in the sky. If you are lucky, you may stumble on a Legend or two?

Slathering Pachirisu in invisible paint, Sketcher sends the little rodent forward to help out Tropius. Pachirisu bounds into the tree and snatches up a few berries before hopping down and cramming them into Tropius's mouth. The Fruit Pokemon's eyes go wide before the nourishing potential of the berries sets in. Suddenly, he spreads his wings wide. All better! No more trying to stretch for berries!

Tropius gushes to you with gratitude and offers to help you out. He agrees to either give you free rides on his back around the skies of the Plateau or to tell you what dwells within the temple. Hrm, tough choice.

    ‡ Round 65 ‡

Tropius explains that the massive temple is home to Dialga and Palkia, who lie dormant within their respective chambers. While Palkia slumbers above the Plateau in one of the temple's skyward towers, Dialga dwells within an inverted tower deep beneath the soil. Giratina is known to be accessible through a vortex concealed within the temple. None of the Pokemon who make this domain their home have ever borne witness to their existence, though they nonetheless uphold this myth with indomitable conviction. Moreover, within the temple there exists a Shrine to Arceus, though the mythic Pokemon to which it pays testimony is known to dwell far, far away from these lands.

However, a dark force has recently been exerting its pressure upon the Tower. The Maidens of Arceus have not been able to perform their blessings at the shrine because of the havoc wrought by this mysterious force. These events have brought the anxieties of the Pokemon living in the otherwise-peaceful Plateau to a fever-pitch. Tropius gestures to the Nidoking and Nidoqueen doing battle no more than fifteen feet away as evidence.

    How do you proceed?

    > Investigate the fighting Nidos
    > Enter the temple

You approach the fighting Nidoking and Nidoqueen and ask them to stop. However, they don't seem to notice you: the male seems to be Thrashing uncontrollably as the female deftly uses Aerial Ace to avoid his hits and strike. Bellossom bounces into action and sprays the scene with a heavy cloud of Sleep Powder. The powder coats Nidoking and he drops at once. Nidoqueen, however, spots the attack before it's too late and throws up a Protect to cover herself. When the powder stops and the shield falls, she nods at you graciously.

"Thank you," she says. "My brother can get... a little heated at times."

Suddenly, you notice something you didn't before: she's wearing a headdress with a gauzy train draping down past her shoulders. It's adorned with dark stones and the letter "A" is mounted squarely in the front. You cleverly realize its significance before she tells you.

"I am one of the seven Maidens of Arceus."

    How do you proceed?

“The Maidens of Arceus are seven individuals of great fidelity tasked with overseeing the Judgment Shrine located not far within the temple. It is our duty to perform the sacred rituals to please Arceus so he might bless this land and all others. We are named after Arceus’s greatest creations, both in relation to the natural world—Earth, Sky and Sea—and individual disposition—Intelligence, Compassion and Strength. We are ruled by a Supreme Maiden to whom we all answer. I am the Earth Maiden.

“However,” she continues, “grave happenings have been befalling the Maidens. It started when various oils and incenses required to perform the rituals went missing from our stores. Then, crimson writing appeared on the walls warning us to cease our activity. Of course, we continued out of duty. That’s when the kidnappings began. It all started when the Sea Maiden did not show up for a morning ritual. It was entirely unlike her, but she remained absent for a week The Strength and Compassion Maidens went missing as well at that point. The Supreme and Sky Maidens not long thereafter. The Intelligence Maiden and I have been continuing our duty for the past several days, but only yesterday morning she vanished.

“My brother wants to leave and get far away from here. He's not alone. A good many of the Pokemon here believe this land to be cursed. That’s why he and I got in this spat. However, I must stay and resume the rituals even at great personal cost. If I do not continue my ordained duty by worshipping Arceus, who knows what vengeance he might exact?

“However, because we have guards monitoring passage in and out of the Plateau and they did not report anything strange over the past month, I’m led to believe that my Maidens must still be hidden within the temple. If they’re even alive. It will be nearly impossible to search for them, though: the temple is the size of a small city, if you couldn’t already tell. I’m not sure what to do.”
