Ahh, Ilex Forest. The memories of n00bishly treading and retreading every friggin’ path because my friend had heard that Celebi would eventually show up. What fun! Today, this will serve as the site for a quick rumble between the lovely Ayeun and the equally lovely MLG. They stand on either side of a forest clearing with their Pokeballs ready to go. With twin flashes of light, the match begins. Ayeun summons a wee widdle buggie into battle while MLG calls upon the help of a steel-coated Piranha Plant. The latter gnashes those mighty fangs, sending tremors of fear throughout poor Caterpie’s body. Not a good introductory omen. Let’s see how things proceed from here!

Yui traipses over toward a rotten log. Hello, log! She forges a mental link with the dead piece of wood and begins channeling health and stamina into the thing. Neat-o! Caterpie, overcome by the trickery of this mental switcheroo, believes the Substitute to be real and begins spewing sticky white stuff all over it. Innuendo abounds.

While Caterpie is preoccupied with the dead chunk of wood, Yui decides to spend the moment… dancing! She does a sashay, a twirl, some, I dunno, jazz hands, and suddenly she begins to feel raw physical strength course through her body. Caterpie, oblivious to the strength of the jazz hands bestowed upon her foe, coats the Substitute in another String Shot.

Back straight with her hands before her eyes, Yui pops a dandelion into her mouth and then struts in circles around the clearing as she performs one wicked pasa doble. Man, all those nights of watching Dancing with the Stars have really paid off! Her strength continues to mount as Caterpie turns the log into what appears to be a gigantic melted marshmallow by bathing it in even more silken strands. She begins to panic. Hey, this long doesn't seem to be getting any slower at all!

She has to come out from behind that sub to attack. When she does, STRING SHOT her to a tree, and STICK her there.

Then start to nibble away with Bug bite.

That Fire blast will probably break the string, so try to dodge it, and then String shot her to the tree again.

3. In the case of Pokemon who's basic forms have very limiting movesets, evolving once will require 1 Point and the second evolution will require 3 Points. The breakdown?

Caterpie, Weedle, Beldum and Wurmple need one point to evolve to their second form, whom will then need 3 Points to evolve to finish their evolutionary line. Battle experience isn't required for either stage ('cept Beldum, cause Metang can fight. Metang will need 4) (but if you actually get a Win with a Caterpie-that would be hot.)

Though her Substitute is covered in String Shot gunk, it is nonetheless in perfect working order and therefore provides Yui with the confidence to simply march right up to Caterpie and snatch up the Bug in those large metal jaws. The fangs begin to bristle with flames as she exerts pressure on the wormie. Once she’s satisfied with the attack, she tosses Caterpie aside and saunters back to her side of the clearing. However, Caterpie isn’t going down that easily. It wriggles up toward the retreating Mawile to spew some silk at her; however, the Substitute has her brain all addled and she decides to gunk up the log further instead.

Caterpie: <-19 HP; -2 EP>
Yui: <-5 EP; Sub: 15 HP>

Yui giggles at poor Caterpie, whose mind really does seem to be shot. Yui then puts some of that extra Attack strength to further use by diving toward the Worm Pokemon and lashing out with her metal mouth appendage. Caterpie tumbles back into the trunk of a tree and begins to moan. Uh-oh. Poor girl seems tuckered out already. Still, she demonstrates true mettle by trucking away with a nice insectoid chomp. Out of the log. Caterpie spits out bits of silk and rotten wood in disgust.

Caterpie: <-18 HP; -4 EP>
Yui: <-6 EP; Sub: 11 HP>

Bits of flame begin to trickle out of Yui’s monstrous set of snappers as she prepares for a Fire Blast. Yui tries to dive out of the attack’s way, but the massive flaming ideogram is too fast. The flames sear poor Caterpie further. She manages to let out another String Shot at a log, but it’s clear she won’t be able to take too much more of this.

As the third round gets underway, Yui starts by singing the Song That Never Ends in a screeching falsetto. Caterpie closes her eyes and winces as her annoyance mounts. How positively Tormenting! The Bug decides to vent her frustration by bashing her face into the log Substitute. The attack, um, does very little. (But on the bright side, at least she, er, performed the Tackle with excellent form and all that good stuff!)

Caterpie: <-3 EP; Tor>
Yui: <-4 EP; Sub: 9 HP>

Closing her eyes, Yui begins to meditate and hone her focus. Caterpie, meanwhile, tries wriggling forward for another Tackle… but the memory of that irritating song annoys her too much to manage it. As a result, she’s a sitting duck as Yui’s Focus Punch collides. The attack is weakened due to Caterpie’s favourable typing, though Yui’s excellent Attack more than makes up for that. As a result, Caterpie is propelled into the air and lands with a rather unpleasant thud. Hrm, I’m starting to think this battle isn’t really going her way.

Yui: <-13 EP; Sub: 9 HP>

Once again, Yui digs her fangs into that delicious Caterpie. Yum! Flames scorch Caterpie without mercy until she’s tossed haphazardly into a clump of bracken. Caterpie nonetheless puts that indomitable spirit of hers to good use by Tackling the log once more. Again, not especially effective.

Yui giggles at the plight of her caterpillar friend. Yeah, that Bug is going down. Traipsing forth, she delivers another crushing Fire Fang which blazes like all hell. Caterpie wriggles free after several excruciating moments and tries to deliver another Tackle to the Substitute; however, the Tormenting effects of Mawile’s song keep her too annoyed to use the same move twice in a row. Thus, Tackle is off the table for the time being.

Caterpie is most definitely at the end of her rope. Recognizing this, Yui coolly aims her steely snappers at the Bug-type and releases a crackling trail of flames. Unable to beat the heat, Caterpie slumps over, defeated.

Ayeun solemnly calls back her defeated Caterpie to its Pokeball. Yui gnashes her metallic teeth energetically; clearly, with so much health left, Ayeun’s next selection is going to have its work cut out for it. Giving another Pokeball a toss, Ayeun summons a squat orange chick onto the field. The creature lets out a few happy cheeps. Time to get this going!

Yui begins by closing her eyes and assuming a meditative stance. Torchic, meanwhile, sets her sights not on the Deceiver Pokemon but rather the String Shot-covered Substitute. Taking aim, she spews out a tiny guttering flame that drifts across the clearing toward the rotten log. Suddenly, the flame detonates, igniting the log. Torchic watches gleefully as the Substitute burns away to cinders.

With that, Yui’s eyes snap open. She emits a battle shriek and zips toward Torchic, letting loose with a punch of epic proportions. Torchic is launched right out of the clearing and into a bunch of shrubs. She lets out a few dazed cheeps to let us know she’s alright.

Torchic: <-23 HP; -5 EP>
Yui: <-13 EP; Sub: Broken!>

Torchic cutely bounces out of the bushes and grips sheepishly. She scurries right up to Yui and opens her little mouth as wide as it goes, releasing a dazzling trail of flames. This is the first hit Yui has sustained all battle and, boy, is it a doozey. However, the Mawile is able to tap into that blistering strength and use it to her own benefit. Yui points her steel appendage like a gun at Torchic and releases a beam of staggering strength at the little farm bird. All of the power of that Flamethrower mixed with a little extra gets sent right back at Torchic, knocking her back her onto the pile of charred ash left by Mawile’s Substitute.

Torchic: <-21 HP; -8 EP>
Yui: <-17 HP; -7 EP>

Yui grins and points her teeth skyward, snapping excitedly. Suddenly, heaps of sand roll in from somewhere outside of Ilex Forest and fill the clearing. Torchic lets out a frightened cheep, unable to see her opponent, but she zips forward anyway as flames consume her entire body. She sees Yui’s shape not far off and dive-tackles the Mawile, roasting her effectively. Torchic grins proudly as she feels her agility increase.

The Sandstorm grates and scratches away at poor Torchic <-3 HP>.

After a busy five rounds, the sixth begins as Torchic uses her newfound Speed to burrow like mad beneath the soil. Yui tries to stop her with a quick Crunch, but isn’t fast enough: Torchic vanishes beneath the surface of the earth and Yui manages to take a chomp out of nothing. She mutters.

Suddenly, beneath the earth, Torchic’s ability kicks in and she receives a blessing of additional Speed.

Torchic: <+1 Spd>
Yui: <-6 EP>

Beneath the soil, Torchic pauses in order to wait out her foe’s next move. Several inches above, Yui doesn’t seem ready to be outsmarted that easily. Really, what’s she going to do? Start optimistically kicking at the air? When at last Torchic feels confident that she has waited long enough, she burrows up and strikes Yui, dealing some potent damage. Growling, Yui quickly responds with a powerful kick to the beak.

Torchic: <-20 HP; -6 EP>
Yui: <-12 HP; -2 EP; -4 HP from fatigue>

Torchic opens wide. Eat flames, creepy iron plant thinger! She rakes flames all over her Steel-type foe, causing a nasty burn to manifest on Yui’s arm. Still, the Mawile maintains her moxie. She informs Torchic that she is the absolute worst of all the Fire-type starts—including Tepig.

Torchic gasps. Including Tepig? Say it ain’t so! She begins sobbing uncontrollably. She feels too emotionally distraught to even consider non-offensive tactics.

Torchic: <-8 EP; Tnt>
Yui: <-17 HP; -2 HP from fatigue; Brn>

Torchic squeals as the sand irritates her <-3 HP> and Yui's Burn begins to sizzle unpleasantly <-3 HP>. Poor Yui begins to pant heavily.

Putting her superior Speed to the test, Torchic quickly punishes her foe with another searing Flamethrower. The air around Yui begins to ripple as she’s exposed to the hot flames, but this little Mawile has one more trick up her sleeve. Out of nowhere, she procured a bright red and white baton. Closing her eyes, Yui pours as much of her strength and vitality into the baton before throwing it up into the air. Suddenly, Yui turns into light before getting sucked back into her Pokeball. Another Pokemon pops out from MLG’s belt to replace her: a fierce dinosaur with a powerful looking head. Reaching upward, the Cranidos catches the baton and receives Yui’s increased strength.

Torchic: <-8 EP>
Yui: <-17 HP; -2 HP from fatigue>

Kuwusama Iwa: <+4 Att>

Torchic swallows. This dino doesn’t at all look easy to beat. Nonetheless, she does her best right off the bat: she breathes out a flaming ideogram that tries to roast up her foe, but his rocky exterior keeps the temperature to a minimum. Grinning ferociously, Kuwusama Iwa charges at his foe and strikes with a colossal Head Smash.

Screaming, Torchic is thrown into the forest. At least her Speed Boost kicks in, though, right?

Kuwusama Iwa: <-8 HP; -13 EP; -16 HP from recoil>

After a few moments, Torchic stumbles out of the greenery, completely dazed. She keeps it together for a final Flamethrower, but it’s simply not going to cut it. With a second powerful dash, this newcomer Cranidos launches Torchic up into the air with a powerful cranial strike.

When she hits the ground, Torchic is down for the count. Done and done.
