Death Note - How to use it
I
+The human whose name is written in this note shall die.
+This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.
+If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen.
+If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack.
+After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
The world of shinigami (shinigami = a god of death)
"Same old thing, day after day... what a bore."
The human world
"This world is a rotten mess..."
From the world of shinigami, the gods of death glance over the human world. Nowadays, the shinigami don't bother to kill people with their Death Notes, and some of them are bored to death.
So it seems that several Death Notes have appeared in the human world lately. One might take that kind of a notebook as a gift from above, while the other might think a human being shouldn't be one to decide who dies and when and how.
It's up to a person how to use such power. If one decides to clean the whole world of criminals, even a fool should notice someone is bumping off the bad guys. Those who support such action are flooding the internet already. They have named their idol as...
"KIRA".
Most persons who obtain a Death Note don't have such an idealistic target, though. They desire power and money and even if they do kill criminals, they do it to cover their real purpose. In any case, they are also known as 'kiras' to public.
However, a shinigami who originally gave his or her Death Note to a human, will possess the human. The loaner of the notebook will be able to see the shinigami and hear its voice.
And then there's the possiblity to obtain something called 'shinigami eyes'. A person with shinigami eyes will be able to see the real name of another person by just looking at his or her face.
Shinigami eyes have their price, though. The person's lifespan will be halved from the point when he obtains shinigami eyes. That's why most Death Note users think twice until they decide to enjoy this oppoturnity.
With thousands of more or less related people dying of heart attacks, most governments have already noticed that something's not right. The police is in a difficult situation and it has had to hire special detectives with top secret identity...
Then to the rules. You say you're in in this RPG by posting that you're in in this topic. Next, you fill out the sign-up and send it to the Game Master, apparently Mikachu Yukitatsu. You can sign up as many characters as you can handle, and you are encouraged to make another character if one of your earlier chartacters dies.
The sign-up for each character should look like this:
The character's real name:
Codename of the character: (generally to be used for persons who don't want to be killed by Death Note or tracked by the police)
Status: (kira/detective of police/opposer of kira/other)
Location: (can be anywhere in real world, and may have to be updated)
Motive: (for kiras only, why do they kill)
Other:
I have to admit here, the original plot of Death Note is kinda complex, and we have to take lots of artictic freedom. Taking characters from the real Death Note isn't exactly forbidden, but you are much encouraged to do original characters. So no free L to everyone!
And yet another thing, don't play as shinigami. The players of characters with Death Note will control their own shinigami each.
Finally, as for the actual gameplay, we'll start when it seems we have enough characters. Those with kiras report on deaths caused by them or even 'fake deaths' that are mentioned in the news but are to distract the police. Kiras should not mention their real names but send them to me. The other characters will either somehow side with kiras, for example show their videos on TV, or try to take them down. Try to make the most of your roleplaying skills.
IN OTHER WORDS, WELCOME TO...

Very well. Just pointing out, I added the good old 'other' to the sign-up form!
....Mikachu, you crafty bastard, you. You have intrigued me. Just one question. Is this an AU of the original series or does it take place at a different time?

Hmm, so only kiras get the death notes, or do other characters get them as well?
I'm in your dimensions, screwing with your reality!
Well, as the original series, this takes place in the real world of today. But the difference is that characters like L, Light Yagami and Misa Amane don't necessarily exist. This far, we aren't even sure about the motives of the characters, like nobody has said there was a certain kira who would kill only criminals yet. Another top difference is that while the original Death Note takes place mainly in Japan, this RPG could be more of an international thingy.
Hm, this question is somewhat related to the rationalization of Death Notes. If a person finds a Death Note and doesn't want to kill anybody, i.e. he or she doesn't become kira, now what will that person do? If the person decides to hide it, there isn't much we can do with such character. Unless another person finds the hidden notebook, of course. Then there's the possibility to hand the book to the police. This way, the police would become aware of how people are killed around the world. I have yet to decide if anybody among the police knows that people are being killed with notebooks.
I hope I was able to give answers to your questions. Anyhow, I can be flexible, at least if it makes more people to join!
