What gender is Ash's Pikachu?

I think I remember back in Kanto, Indigo season. That Pikachu was a girl.

And now allot of people are saying that Pikachu is a boy.

I for one have watched the anime through, minus most of Johto/Sinnoh.

So what gender is Pikachu now?

In a Kanto episode called Princess VS Princess, there are the prize dolls that will be handed to the winner of the competition. There we see Pikachu dressed up as a shogun and Clefairy as a queen. Of course that's not Ash's Pikachu, but I think the Japanese anime artists wanted to pair Ash's Pikachu with a female Clefairy since Clefairy And The Moon Stone and the doll somehow represents Ash's Pikachu. At least somehow, there are also other Pokemon related to Ash.

Of course this pairing detail can be argued.

I doubt the shogun Pikachu was supposed to represent Ash's Pikachu

In the same episode, Misty had all the male characters carry her shopping bags, including Pikachu. I would think if Pikachu was female, it would've participated alongside Misty

OK, it was just a coincidence and my argument was silly anyway. The other dolls besides Pikachu and Clefairy were the three First Generation starters, plus Jigglypuff, Chansey and...Poliwag or Poliwhirl...

At the first glance, this detail may seem to represent Ash's Team but what are the three last ones doing there, then? I'm arguing with myself now, better shut up.

Pikachu is male, it was shown when (Spoiler:) Snivy's attract worked on Pikachu and all Ash's team (except Pidove)

For me it was always obvious that Ash's Pikachu is male, after all it was quite excited about seeing Misty's sisters in season one.

Funny, I just assumed he was male from day 1, I never contemplated the possibility of Ash's Pikachu being female. But I've just done a web search and it seems he was male after all.

Still, his excitement about seeing Misty's sisters says nothing about his gender. I don't think he thinks of humans in that way.

I've always thought Pikachu was male too, from the beginning.
And pretty much being in Sinnoh clarifies that because of the tail and gender differences. xD

Tina: I agree with your first reason. The second is a hint, but not definite proof, and the third... well, female Pikachus do exist. But wasn't Ash's Pikachu clearly established as male in the anime? I've watched the horrendous Spanish dub (worst dub ever, really), so whatever they said there has no real value, but I'm sure other people have mentioned this being so in the English dub too, and probably even in the original Japanese version.
