Cool Jalapeņos and chili peppers discussion

I have jalapeņos! I found them yesterday, for the first time in my life, after hearing about them on the Internet for years. I got them in Chinatown! Those people have just about everthing!

I ate the tip of one to see what it tasted like. It was not bad. Not nearly as hot as I had imagined, but sort of tasty.

This was originally in Mt. Moon because I found it too irrelevant for Misc, but an actual pepper-related discussion began, so it's here now.

I haven't tried jalapenos myself...however, I have tried the jalapeno flavoured jelly beans from Jelly Belly during the Christmas I got a 40 pack (or was it a 50 pack? I cannot remember) of the various flavours of jelly beans...it unfortunately was too hot for me to handle, but oh well...I guess to get used to spicy foods, you have to try some of the kinds with a weaker level of spiciness before attempting to try one of the kinds with a stronger level of spiciness.

I've never had a jalapeno mainly because I'm very picky with food when it comes to texture/consistency regardless of how good the flavor may be, even some basic fruits and vegetables repulse me for that reason (and I know how healthy they are which is a shame).

But... plenty of times I've had the jalapeno flavored pretzels from Snyder's (and I'm sure other pretzel companies make that too), and they're delicious and I find myself addicted to them, so at this point I would definitely consider trying it.
Funny story, I used to hate mustard, but then I started liking/using it more after being addicted to honey-mustard pretzels. Think I'm gonna get a jalapeno from the local Bueno Y Sano next chance I get.

I've never heard of poppers of Piggly Wiggly before. I take it the latter is either a store or some kind of restaurant. And, according to Wikipedia, poppers is a slang term for various alkyl nitrites inhaled for recreational purposes. I assume that's not what you're talking about, so could you please enlighten me? What are these poppers like?

Piggly Wiggly is a grocery store chain in the southern US. Jalapeno poppers are fried snacks that are breaded on the outside and have jalapenos and cheese on the inside.

Not completely true. As far as I know, there are plenty found in Wisconsin, which is where I live.

As for spicy food in General, I LOVE spicy food. I love it so much that I was stupid, and the very first spicy sauce I tried at buffalo Wild Wings was the Blazin' sauce (which happens to be the hottest kind they have available).

Long story short, the waitress was kind enough to fetch me a glass of milk.

That kind of reminds me of my family. I'm pretty much the only one that can really take spicy food. My brother likes to try some spicy things every now and then, but he just can't take it.

Spicy isn't normally my thing, either. What gets me most times with peppers, though, is that they're usually in dishes (as opposed to by themselves), and they'll have a different texture (crunchy in a mush, etc), which I just can't stand. That said, the salsa we get has enough peppers in it to give it a kick. As long as I have enough chips to out-salty the spicy, anyway.

Jalapenos. <3 I've only ever had them jarred, not fresh, which is disappointing since I've heard the latter is much spicier. I love those things. Jalapenos on pizza/subs... jalapeno havarti... jalapeno chocolate... jalapeno-flavoured Pringles smothered in hot sauce... so good.

They're spicy, but not that spicy.

And Jeff's post gave me an idea for a quick and simple meal:

Bread with cheese and jalapeņos. Simple and tasty at the same time.

I love jalepenos, especially in my nachos. I love spicy food in general too. Seafood gets twice as good when it's spicy, I routinely get Tongue Torch boneless wings at Zaxby's, and I squeeze out pepperocinis on my pizza.

Cherry peppers are my favorite. I buy the ones in the jar, remove the guts, and stuff em with prosciutto and provolone! It's normally a family holiday treat, but I found the stuff on sale today, just ate some, made it for the first time (on my own and just for me), then went online and saw this thread. Intriguing coincidence!

I love jalapenos, and all pappers in general. Often toss habaneros in my cooking...g/f hates it though, I make it too spicy heheheh. But yours are reddish, and not green (least from the pic). The green ones are hotter than the red jalapenos.

I bet I win your family. One time, I took a bite of a Wendy's spicy chicken sandwich. I almost puked from the spicy. xD I had to give it to a friend and then I just ate my fries and got a chocolate milkshake instead.

Oh! On the actual thread topic, I love jalapenos, chili peppers, and just about anything hot and spicy. I'll try anything once, even if it's allegedly "inferno" spice. It might make my eyes water and I might not want a second bite... but as long as someone is there to finish it who will, I'll try it.

These snacks are the main reason why I've gained so much weight during the last two years. I also like chili rice cakes.

You should be careful with that, Mikachu. Overeating is bad for health. Maybe you can restrict them to one bag per week or something like that?

I tried putting one of the jalapeņos into [my own interpretation of] tacos today, and they came out good. But I also used a couple of Chinese peppers which are a lot hotter, so I didn't get to feel the taste of the jalapeņo much.

I made a reasonable facsimile of those jalapeņo poppers mentioned earlier. They were pleasant, but I think the reason I enjoyed them was less to do with the peppers and more to do with the fact that you're essentially eating fried breaded cheese. The peppers are essentially just a delivery system. I dipped them in sweet chilli sauce, which was quite nice.

In general I enjoy spicy food. I think I am quite sensitive to hot food in that I get quite a hot reaction to most foods considered 'hot' but I don't find this unpleasant, unless the meal itself is unpleasant. That's why I generally only go for the hot options at restaurants that aren't complete shit. Sticking super-spicy chilli powder in a sub-par curry is unpleasant.

I use chilli peppers in some of my cooking, diced chilli peppers can be thrown into virtually anything (stir fries, curries, pastas, pizza, potatoes, casseroles). Yummy.

I know. My goal is to restrict eating them to two bags a month, the current rate's no good.

By the way, what's the correct English pronunciation for Jalapeņo? You should not ignore the sign below the n, or?

I'm not sure about English. Since they're Mexican in origin, I go with the Spanish pronounciation, in which the "ņ" sounds like the Finnish "nj".

Yep. And I sure meant 'above', not 'below' the n. Also, I believe you in Argentina are used to more spicy food than we Finns, so my definition of spicy surely differs from yours.

I'm not sure about that. Argentina is not known for its spicy foods; in fact, nearly all the spicy foods we get come from other countries, and it's usually toned down to suit the local palate... which makes it quite frustrating when I go to, say, a Chinese restaurant and try to order something spicy, they warn me it's hot, I say "yes, I know, that's what I want" and then they give me a toned down variant anyway and I have to ask for hot sauce. -_- My family, however, is used to eating spicy foods. I think it comes from my grandfather on my mother's side, who won't eat a meal unless it's spicy. He grows his own putapariķ peppers in his garden.

my mom pronounces Jalapeņo so wrong, it's not even funny.

She pronounces it sort of like spanish pronunciation, so she says the J like an H, but she ignores the Tilde on the ņ, and just says it like a regular N. It sounds like she's saying halapeno, I guess. I don't know why, but it just annoys me.

No. Not sure if that's a British thing or not.

That's how we pronounce it too. With the "e" being pronounced like the English long "E" rather than the Spanish "E" (which, of course, sounds just like our long "A"). Everything else is the same as the Spanish pronunciation.

They have decent flavor, but nothing makes my mouth water like a scotch bonnet or ghost pepper. I have no idea why.

Ghost pepper? The Bhut Jolokia? You're either crazy or your digestive tract is lined with Vaseline.

...But then again, look who's talking. My spicy food dream is to try Blair's 16,000,000 Reserve one day. If I can eat one full crystal without dying a horrible death in the process/aftermath, I'll be satisfied.
