Mr. Obama is the projected winner of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

Florida right now is separated by less than 1,000 votes. This will be very close.

With Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and New Hampshire going to Obama, the math gets pretty straightforward. Romney needs Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, AND Ohio. Or, he could lose Ohio and win the rest of the swing states (i.e., Iowa, Nevada, Colorado) and end up with a 269 to 269 tie.

But I don't think his chances are very good IMOHO.

This is shaping up to be the biggest embarrassment for the GOP in years.

They lost both of Romney's home states.

    They lost Ryan's home state.

Instead of gaining control of the Senate, like they planned, they've so far lost four seats.

Mourdock lost, Akin is still losing. I guess that what they said was a pretty big deal after all.

McMahon didn't only lose, she got her ass kicked, bad.

And to think Dan Rather said that his gut told him this would be a good day for Romney. Maybe it was some bad egg salad he had for lunch.

NBC has called Iowa for Mr. Obama.

Well I think the thing that may have changed the election here was the Hurricane, it showed Obama to be Presidential for the first time in the long time. I think he will get a second term now, but as I said before there needed to be a game changer, and it looks like the hurricane was the game changer.

Looking back at the past 15 months, I'm reminded of so many things...

Like Douglas Hibbs' Bread and Peace Model, where he used mathematics to predict a Romney victory. Think he might have forgotten to carry a two somewhere?

Or that university in Colorado who has successfully predicted every Presidential election for the past... Twenty years, was it? But who predicted a Romney victory. Can't win 'em all, I guess.

I'm reminded of every crazy Romney supporter who replied to my well-thought-out posts by telling me to "keep drinking the Kool Aid", and the moronic rantings by birthers. I'm reminded of exagerrations and outright lies told about Mr. Obama, about the anti-gay sentiments spewed by the GOP and their chauvinistic attitude.

The thing that disgusted me the most was the Super Pacs.

Well, I guess that Mr. Romney and his billionaire friends can learn one thing from this... No matter how rich you are, there are just some things that money can't buy.

    or

    more gridlock than ever?

given no landslide, a permanent maintenance of the campaign mode obama that people apparently enjoy will be necessary to serve as an ongoing threat against the house (obstruction having already been threatened days ago)

other than that, there is some cool news given the status quo: d-sen + d-pres locks up scotus for a couple decades

plus serious puerto rican statehood progress is interesting

    Here's something to think about:

With Obama's win in Nevada, it means that Florida, Ohio, and Virginia did not even matter in the end. Obama has 272 electoral votes even without them.

And with Obama still President and the Democrats still holding the Senate and the GOP still controlling the House, billions of dollars were spent on a campaign that does not seem to have shifted the balance of power in the least.

Money is the root of all evil... Like I said, there are some things that it just can't buy.

Virginia was kind of a surprise. I didn't expect it to go to Obama.

Some other good things that happened tonight:

Gay marriage is now legal in Maine and Maryland; Minnesota voters struck down a bill that would have forbidden it. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin made history as the first openly gay politician to be elected to the Senate.

Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock will be looking for new jobs, and good riddance is all I can say. Same for Linda McMahon, whose two failed bids for the Senate have cost her almost $90 million of her own money. Considering how badly she lost last night, throwing it all in a trash dumpster would have saved her a lot of time.

In short, my only regret, really, is that Bachmann is still in the House. I can take comfort in knowing that no-one will likely listen to her any more.

So... Anyone want to take bets on how long before Orly Taitz tries to convince a judge that the election was rigged, or that the results should be considered null and void because of Mr. Obama's "ineligibilty".

Glad that Obama won a second term, and it's good news about same-sex marriage in the states that legalised it.

Interesting that marijuana use has been legalised in two states. I think, on balance, I'm in favour of legalised drug use: drugs themselves are quite neutral - all they really serve to do is numb feelings, or amplify feelings that are already there anyway. Nonetheless, saying that use of certain drugs is relatively harmless is a bit troubling: people who drive stoned, for example, pose a serious risk to their own and other people's safety, as much or probably more so than a drink driver. Plus, smoking anything is not good for the lungs; and marijuana use can also have the effect of unmasking latent schizophrenia. Of course, people will do drugs regardless of their legality, so it's from a harm reduction perspective that I support legalised drug use, to enable safer drug use and reduce crime, overdose, etc. - but there are still risks involved that shouldn't be ignored.

The election has finally come and gone ... I think let's leave this thread open a day or two more and then it's closing time.

As a Canadian, following American politics and trying to keep an understanding on how it all works isn't exactly easy for me, but in the end, I'm glad Obama won.

It only makes me wonder how high his popularity will soar here in Canada with his second term.

I can think of several reasons why Romney (and the GOP in general) lost. They alienated minorities and women, and assumed - wrongfully - that Democrats who voted for Mr. Obama the last time were so disappointed with him that they'd stay home this time.

The people who waited in line six hours to vote - in bad weather in some places - proved that the last presumption was a big mistake.

Clearly, the Supreme Court's ruling on Super Pacs was a dud. All the millions of dollars they poured into Romney's campaign accomplished nothing. Like I said before, money can buy a lot of things, but an election isn't one of them.

And maybe if Romney had taken an oath of loyalty to the American people and not one to the National Organization for Marriage, it would have helped.

Hopefully, Romney will be forgotten as time goes by, just like Wendell Lewis Willkie was.

Who was he? Ah, look him up.
