The Importance of the Imagery of Sight, through the duality of Night and Day in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream

In A Midsummer Night's Dream we are introduced to two separate worlds, only a few miles away from each other, but as different as night and day – which are exactly the concepts that represent the two. The play begins in the city that was the center of the Greek civilization – Athens. Athens is the world as we know it; a place of order, ruled by men and human logic. But although Athens may be the center of the world – it is not the center of the play. Day gives way to night, and the mortals are replaced by fairies residing in the Athenian woods. The forest plays a central part in the play, with its darkness, mystery and unseen horrors. The four lovers, hoping to leave their troubles behind in the real world step into the dark woods and the night sets them on a rollercoaster of events on the way to self-discovery.
It is said that in darkness, reliance on senses other than eyesight leads to true seeing. Just like in Sophocles' Oedipus Trilogy, when Oedipus, already the king of Thebes, is determined to unearth the mystery concerning the death of the previous king, Laius, Tiresias, the blind prophet is summoned to the palace. He accuses Oedipus himself of killing Laius. At first Oedipus rejects the accusation, but after further investigation he finds out the truth about his parents, and the prophecy that led him to kill Laius, his father, and marry his mother. Agonized by his fate, Oedipus rakes out his eyes. In blindness, Oedipus understands that his agonized past was not his fault. Oedipus gains new insight about his situation, and through his blindness he attains wisdom and transcendence. Thus it seems that the darkness of the forest setting is particularly important. The darkness forces the lovers, by disrupting their vision, to further explore their relationships and differences, to reach a better understanding of both.
In the play, love is presented using many sight imageries. The fairies add a literal dimension to the connection between love and sight - the love potion is applied to the eyes. The play describes love and sight as inseparable things – love affects sight, and vice versa. When one falls in love his perception of the world is changed so much that horrific monsters may be seen as beautiful.
In this paper I will explore the motives of sight, night and day, and how the change of the setting, from the bright Athenian day to the eerie forest night, takes the lovers through a journey which enables them to discover the light upon their return.
Throughout the play, the sense of sight and its mediator - the eyes are brought up again and again in the context of falling in love. This begins as early as in the first act of the play when Hermia declares, in her debate with Theseus, that she would like her father to look through her eyes, meaning accept what she sees right, and give his blessing to her union with Lysander. Theseus turns it around, and claims that it should be the opposite – Hermia's should follow her father's judgment, that is, her eyes must look at things and examine them through his judgment. This remark connects sight with judgment, and this connection keeps on surfacing throughout the play. For example, when Hermia and Lysander are left alone and Lysander lists the obstacles in true love's way, followed by Hermia's cynical replies, Hermia mentions eyes in the context of judgment, again:

Or else it stood upon the choice of friends,--

HERMIA
O hell! to choose love by another's eyes.
In the end of the conversation at Theseus' palace, Hermia and Lysander agree upon leaving the city in order to save their love from those who wish to separate them. In that conversation, there is a first reference to the crucial role of sight in the affairs of the heart. Hermia says that looking at one's beloved is the lover's food. Therefore, not seeing the one you love, means starvation. Comparing it to such a fundamental element in life as food demonstrates how vital an aspect sight is for love. It is a basic, essential need that has to be fulfilled in order for love to be sustained. No wonder that an old saying proclaims 'out of sight, out of heart.'
I would like to note here that throughout the history of the humankind, love was considered to come from the heart, and that analogy is still used today, mostly in a metaphorical sense. But in Shakespeare's play, love is mostly connected to the eyes both literally and metaphorically. In her monologue at the end of Act I, Scene 1, Helena touches upon these points. First, the role of the eyes and sight when falling in love. She mentions that the moment Demetrius looked at Hermia's eyes – he fell in love with her – what we call today "love at first sight". Eyes are the focus of his attraction, and Demetrius, according to Helena, dotes on Hermia's eyes.
In addition, Helena brings up the idea of the blindness of live, by referring to the Roman god of love – Cupid. Cupid is the god of erotic love, identified with the Greek Eros – son of Venus or Aphrodite, the love goddess. He is frequently depicted as a beautiful winged boy with his bow and arrows, which arouse love and passion in those they strike: like love itself, he is erratic and mischievous, wooing the mortal psyche.

And therefore is wing'd Cupid painted blind:
Nor hath Love's mind of any judgment taste;
Wings and no eyes figure, unheedy haste:
And therefore is Love said to be a child,
Because in choice he is so oft beguiled.

Cupid being described as blind demonstrates the irrational and arbitrary nature of love. This nature is what complicates the storyline of the play, and the lives of the four lovers. It is responsible for the fact that Demetrius loves Hermia and not Helena, although the latter is considered as fair as the first in Athens. The eyes are mentioned here as the rational choice – and the mind as the blind one – as opposed to the common conception, which claims that the mind is where logic comes from. Love is said to have the choice of a child easily beguiled, because when one is in love his judgment is twisted, and makes sense only to the lover. According to the play, Cupid's arrow also mistakenly created the love-in-idleness flower, from which Oberon, king of fairies residing in the woods, produced the magical love juice that we will discuss next.
When the four lovers enter the Athenian woods, they know little of the trouble that awaits them. The rulers of the fairies in the woods – Oberon and Titania, king and queen of the fairies, are in the middle of a dispute that shows no signs of ending. Oberon sends Puck, a mischievous, shrewd servant of his, to fetch the love-in-idleness flower, from which he extracts the love juice, which, once administered to one's eyes, causes the victim to magically fall in love with the next person or creature he sees. Oberon intends to use the juice on Titania's eyes, in order to divert her from the dispute, but orders Puck to put the spell on Demetrius' eyes as well, to make him fall in love with Helena. Puck accidentally charms Lysander instead, which causes Lysander to fall in love with Helena, which thus leads to a big confusion among the lovers.
The love spell adds a literal dimension to the sight imagery. First of all, the love juice is applied to the victim's eyes, physically. From the moment on, the victim becomes blind, blinded metaphorically by strong, senseless, irresistible love. Titania falls in love with Bottom, a simple artisan transformed into a human-donkey hybrid by Puck. Her love transcends all logic and taste. She becomes so blind that she is sure that the horrid monster that Bottom became is the most beautiful being in existence. "Love is blind", claims a common saying, and Titania's case demonstrates it.
Lysander and Demetrius both fall in love with Helena under the spell's effect, and the love transforms their sight and judgment to such a degree that it causes a radical change in the minds of both men regarding their previous emotions for Hermia. For example, throwing insulting remarks about her looks, which they earlier considered to be the fairest. Moreover, Lysander says that he knows not why he loved Hermia at all. The sudden crush on Helena, brought about my magic, caused him to change his mind about how he feels towards Hermia: from love and desire to rejection and disgust.
The title of the play gives us the first hint about the importance of the nighttime setting in the woods to the connection between love and sight in the lovers' journey. Night and dream are a part of it because they are both important elements of the story. In sunny daytime Athens, a set of relationships was established between the lovers, and all of them remained stubborn and static, each of them stuck with feelings that cannot be fulfilled. The darkness of the night takes away the clarity of sight from the lovers, thus shaking the foundations of their love which is based on eyes and sight, as derived from the imagery world the play has established, and playing hence and forth with their feelings and relationships, testing and altering them. The darkness also gives the events of the night their dream-like qualities. A dream is only possible when the eyes are closed, when vision is inward-looking. The lovers try to make sense of the night's events through the framework of a dream.
