So far humans are a class 0 civilization. We do not control the weather, we have not harnessed the power of the planet, and we are still bombing each other.

In order to move on to a class 1 civilization we would need to Harness the power of the tidal forces, geothermal energy, and completely stop using carbon based fuels. We would also need to stop killing each other over things like religion and drugs, and money. We would also need to be able to control the weather in a way that we could prevent tidal waves, and massive storm systems like hurricanes and tornadoes.

A type 2 civilization will Harness the power of the sun itself, and will have colonized nearby planets. Things like teleportation and invisibility will be commonplace. Once we become a type 2 civilization, nothing can destroy us. We will be essentially immortal, and not even the sun going supernova would phase us. We'd either stop it, or move our planet(s).

A type 3 civilization can do anything. Time travel, FTL (faster than light) travel, the power of entire galaxies can be harnessed. A type 3 civilization can control the very fabric of space and time, and quite possibly could be capable of creating their own universe. They could be capable of inter-dimensional travel.

The difference between a type 0 civilization and a type 1 civilization is the difference between an ape and a human. They difference between us and a type 2 is that of a human and an ant. The difference between us and a type 3 is that of a human and an amoeba.
