Chaos, DL and DF look upon our two battlers with devious grins. All of a sudden, they lob their pies at the battlers. Burn is brought to the brink of defeat thanks to a measly blueberry pie while Franklin, on the other hand, takes pies of both the cream and blueberry variety to the face. Suddenly, ice crystals materialize around poor Franklin until the Squirtle is frozen solid.

Suddenly, from beneath his icy tomb, Franklin begins to glow blue. The play of the light on the ice is downright purdy.

Burn: <-10 HP>
Franklin: <-16 HP; Frz; Torrent>

Having been put through the ringer, Burn is understandably exhausted at this point but still lumbers forth for one last strike. Electricity crackles around the Charmander’s hand, but it starts sparking and fizzling erratically. He brings the ThunderPunch slamming against Franklin’s icy tomb, but its capacity is diminished slightly. Suddenly, as the electric current begins thaw the head of our trapped Squirtle friend a tad, Burn can’t go on: he succumbs to exhaustion and slumps over.

Burn: <-2 HP from fatigue>

Ayeun calmly returns her fallen Charmander to its Pokemon after a good fight before contemplating her next selection. After some thought, she summons an overweight sound system onto the field. It roars obnoxiously. Without warning, no less than five hecklers toss pies! Woah! Three of them collide with poor little frozen Franklin who can’t take it anymore: his goo-covered head slumps over and he is defeated. Meanwhile, as Loudred cleans herself up after getting attacked, her muscles seize up. Uh-oh. That’s never good.

Death by pies is truly a tragic thing and DCM has no choice but to recall his pie-covered Squirtle to its Pokeball. His next selection takes to the field with a burst of crimson light. A frightening purple ghost does an airborne lap around the tent to showboat and cackles maniacally. (I would just like to point out that when I originally typed this, I used to the word “frightenous” to describe Gengar, which is not a word at all. Good work, Oslo.) Suddenly, DL throws a pumpkin pie at Loudred, further widening the health disparity between these two fighters. Whatevs! Let’s just get this underway!

As the next round officially begins, Orpheus starts by spouting some rather rude insults. The Gengar cruelly informs Loudred that she’s no sound system at all; in fact, she’s as quiet as a mouse with laryngitis wearing soft-soled shoes! Woah, buddy. I’m sure that crossed some line in Loudred world. Loudred is infuriated to the point of reckless attack, abandoning whatever strategy he had in mind to instead swipe at Orpheus in rage. Of course, since he’s, y’know, a Ghost and everything, this rage-fuelled attempt at violence fails.

Orpheus: <-4 EP>

As Loudred stands there and fumes, Orpheus makes eye contact with the big lout and, through mysterious Hypnotic powers, begins to lull his foe into a deep sleep. Suddenly, it’s too much for Loudred: the Big Voice Pokemon buckles and falls, out like a light.

Orpheus: <-4 EP>

Having successfully incapacitated his foe, Orpheus is free to run amok. Taking a DBZ-esque stance, he unleashes a concentrated blast of pure energy at Loudred. The attack’s effects are devastating, throwing Loudred way up to the top of the tent before he lands with a thud on the ground. Ouchies. Ridiculously, through all that, Loudred continues to sleep.

While Loudred slumbers (and man, can that girl snore) our hecklers prepare for their assault. DF and DL each whip a pie at Orpheus, coating our ghostie friend in pie goo. Lovely.

Orpheus: <-15 HP>

Orpheus closes his eyes and begins honing his focus. Suddenly, Loudred leaps to her feet as though he were a charmed puppet. Without warning, she picks up a stray rock off the ground and lobs it at the Gengar. Having been Smacked Down out of the air, Orpheus tumbles down to the ground. He tries to do a little hop to get airborne once again but he just can’t seem to manage to Levitate. He lets out a curse. Yeah, needless to say… his focus has been broken.

Loudred: <-3 EP; Zzz>
Orpheus: <-5 HP; Levitate negated>

Once again, Orpheus begins honing his focus. However, it doesn’t work out so well as Loudred, still asleep, manages to rattle off another attack. She lets out a chilling pulse of water at Gengar, who is not especially damaged but perhaps more irritated by this silly strike. Once again, say bye-bye to your focus.

Orpheus: <-6 HP>

All of a sudden, Loudred hops to her feet, blissfully awake once more. Awesome! Less awesome, of course, is the sudden forearm thrust Orpheus performs as he knocks the megaton sound system onto her butt. Rude! Loudred hops to her feet and tries to retaliate, but he muscles lock up and she’s rendered immobile. Vengeance delayed.

Time for dessert! DL, the sole heckler this round, lobs a yummy cream pie at Loudred. Fortunately for the big lug, it doesn’t manage to freeze her. Phew!

Orpheus: <…>

Beep beep! Roaring like a crazy person, Loudred slams her big foot on the ground and elicits a series of tremors. In a bid to evade the move, Orpheus waits for the tremors to approach… and jumps! Except he’s not used to his legs so he actually just topples over and falls flat on his face, leaving himself vulnerable to the shock waves that knock him around a good deal. Pulling himself up, the Gengar glowers and locks eyes with his foe. He Hypnotizes Loudred into another deep sleep.

Orpheus: <-9 HP; -4 EP; -1 Spd>

While Loudred sleeps, Orpheus traipses over toward Loudred. He clobbers the sleeping lout with a strength-sucking punch that rewarded the wily Ghost with some nummy health. Loudred suddenly hops to her feet and, still asleep, retaliates by screaming at the top of her lungs. No matter how unpleasantly loud the Hyper Voice is, Orpheus doesn’t seem particularly bothered.

Orpheus: <-6 EP; +6 HP>

For the second time this battle, Orpheus does another DBZ-style pose and shoots off another brilliant beam of intense mental acuity. Loudred is hurled into the air like a ragdoll and tumbles out of the tent. The poor girl! Suddenly, she comes running back in and… slumps over and continues sleeping. Yup, Paralysis will do that to you.

Taking aim, DL says some rather hurtful things about postmortem obesity (a leading cause of pulmonary hypertension among the undead) before lobbing a delicious apple pie at Orpheus. Fortunately, the Gengar’s typing protects him from any potentially poison after-effects, but the dessert still bears a little sting nonetheless.

Orpheus: <-5 HP>

Drain Punch time! Once again, Orpheus decimates his slumbering foe with a quick and painful punch that results in a happy boost of health for our little Gengar friend. Still asleep, Loudred bounces up and releases dual blasts of pink energy from her antennae. The Extrasensory assault rocks our specter friend as the same typing that protected him from becoming Poisoned results in him being blown across the tent and through the tent flap. And Loudred continues to sleep.

Loudred: <-12 HP; -6 EP; Zzz>
Orpheus: <-12 HP; +6 HP; -6 EP>

All of a sudden, Loudred stirs awake and climbs to her feet. Though she’s significantly more injured than she was upon nodding off, she’s nonetheless ready to give it her all and bring this phantom down for good.

...and then Orpheus comes sprinting back into the tent and delivers the Brick Break that brings her down at last. So much for an epic comeback.

Ayeun recalls her defeated Loudred for a good rest. At this point, as she prepares to make her fifth selection, she knows she’s nearing the battle’s halfway point and will have to step things up in order to narrow the disparity between her and her opponent. With a toss, she summons a gigantic steel-covered serpent who fills the tent. Suddenly, Chaos shouts something about how it can’t taste apples before lobbing an apple pie at its eye. Though Rage’s Steel typing protects it from being poisoned, it still blinks in pie-induced fury.

Orpheus: <…>

Rage lets out a terrific roar before beckoning a whirling Sandstorm into the tent. The audience pulls their collars up over their faces and Charles throws a screaming fit because now there’s sand in all his beautiful pies. However, Orpheus combats this by clapping his hands together and summoning… the sun? Because, you know, of ghosts and their famous love for daylight. Rage growls as his weather effect is overridden.

Orpheus: <-4 EP>

Giggling, Orpheus flounces over to the base of our massive snaky friend and clobbers him with a blistering Fire Punch. Ouch! The weather-boosted heat from the flames gives Rage cause to roar like a maniac and retaliate by breathing out a beam of brown energy. Just as the sunlight boosted Orpheus’s attack, Rage’s Sheer Force delivers some extra kick. Alas, poor Gengar simply isn’t used to taking damage from all these Ground moves. Where’s Levitate when you need it?

Rage: <-16 HP; -7 EP>
Orpheus: <-18 HP; -6 EP>

The opponents trade moves—Fire Punch for Earth Power—once again. Orpheus’s blistering punch heats up Rage’s steely frame while the Steelix’s energy blast happily launches Orpheus into the table of hecklers. His ass lands in an empty pie plate. Anyone up for a slice of Gengar?
