    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 21 ‡

Grey's certainly not messing around with his next Pogey. With a flash of light, a snake with feet that resemble cream-coloured riding boots appears by the pond's edge. A Stealth Rock leaps out of nowhere and smacks him lightly on the tail. Ow. Though he'd like to up his paramaters, Barbossa is unfortunately rendered immobile by Paralysis and can't do a thing... but hey, at least it's nice and sunny all of a sudden! So! That's something!

    Barbossa: <Can't move!>
    Masamune: <-3 HP SRk; -4 EP>

Masamune smiles and cruelly unleashes a storm of razor-sharp leaves upon his opponent. Barbossa is sliced, diced and then sliced again for good measure, leaving him feeling like a plate of ceviche. What's more, Masamune's Special Attack rises. What witchcraft is this?! Ever the determined little pirate turtle, Barbossa responds with a super effective Ice Beam which does a decent amount of damage. Not as decent as that Leaf Storm, but decent enough.

    Barbossa: <-23 HP; -8 EP>
    Masamune: <-15 HP; -12 EP; +2 SpA>

Masamune uses the sun's bright light and his ranged prowess to whip out one heck of a SolarBeam. The attack blows Barbossa clear out of the pond and he lands on the opposite bank in the daze. After a tense moment, he gets back up and kicks out a howling Blizzard. However, the Sunny Day messes with the move's accuracy. The storm ends up sailing right past Masamune, leaving the snake and his snazzy riding boots safe and sound.

    Barbossa: <-22 HP; -10 EP>
    Masamune: <-10 EP>

    ‡ Post-Round ‡

One more Leaf Storm, then Solar Beam to finish him off. If it's no longer sunny, though, change Solar Beam to another Leaf Storm. Magical Leaf if he's still alive.

    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 22 ‡

Barbossa drifts through the water toward Masamune, who remains cool as a cucumber smothered in extra cool sauce. The Servine maintains his strong offensive front with another storm of leaves, which whisks across the water and and threatens to cut Barbossa up like some kind of obscure foreign dish involving diced turtles you wouldn't want to eat because turtles are too cute to be diced, mirite. No fear, though. Barbossa's Protect stops the attack. Phew.

    Barbossa: <-8 EP>
    Masamune: <-12 EP; +2 SpA>

Barbossa slides out of the water and attempts to quickly lay into Masamune with an attack, but he just isn't fast enough... by a considerable margin. Masamune beats Barbossa to the punch with a might SolarBeam which knocks the turtle back into the water. Omg. Walking snakes. Such jerks. Barbossa once again slides out of the water and throws himself forward for a well-aimed Body Slam before erupting with a Double Team. Things just became 500% more turtley in here.

    Barbossa: <-24 HP; -11 EP; 4 clones>
    Masamune: <-9 HP; -10 EP>

Barbossa's clones start to flicker in the harsh sunlight, but Masamune doesn't seem to notice. He kicks out a sparkling stream of leaves which dance and sway and clog and tapdance and do a pasodoble in the air before heading toward Barbossa with fail-proof precision. They do what the Leaf Storm at the beginning of the round could not. Thoroughly sliced and diced, Barbossa flops over. Pass the salt, plz.

    Barbossa: <-12 HP; 0 clones>
    Masamune: <-4 EP>

    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 23 ‡

Another day, another dollar Pokemon change. Wolfsong recalls her poor, not-long-for-this-world Tirtouga and replaces him with Toucan Sam's derpish cousin, Eva. Masamune puffs out his chest and begins plodding around the joint like he owns the place, which sends Eva into a bewildered rage. She manages to call up a Sandstorm but then begins walking away. Er. We still have a battle going on?

    Eva: <-4 EP; Cfn; +2 Att>
    Masamune: <-4 EP>

The rest of us jog after Eva, who has wandered toward the ice toe. Eep. Masamune steps onto the ice and immediately faceplants. These boots aren't made for skating, and that's not what they'll do. However, that's better than what Eva does. She soars up into the sandy skies before swooping down and colliding with the icy ground. Confusion be crazy. Masamune pulls himself up, gingerly slides over to Eva and swats her with an... Aqua... Tail? Wtf. Okay.

    Eva: <-14 HP; -5 HP Cfn>
    Masamune: <-7 EP>

Masamune's tail goes from watery to metallic as he swats Eva yet again. The parrot lets out a croak and seems to have overcome her Confuzzled state. Aww yeah! She once again takes flight and this time collides with Masamune instead of the ground. Look, ma! She's learning!

Eva: <-15 HP; -4 EP; Cfn no more>
    Masamune: <-13 HP; -8 EP>

The Sandstorm grates against Masamune's scaly skin <-3 HP>.

Okay Eva, start by digging down and wait for Masamune to use his other gigadrain before you emerge and finish your dig. Finally finish with Wing attack. If for some reason you can't dig, then create A small substitute and then hidden power instead.

    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 24 ‡

The ice proves problematic for our two battlers. Palms glowing green, Masamune tries to slide over to Eva but ends up slipping and falling instead. Derp. However, Eva doesn't have much better luck. She tries to Dig, only to realize she first has to break through the thick layer of ice beneath her. When she rips her way through the slippery surface, she finds the ground underneath cold and semi-frozen as well. Ugh. It takes considerably more time and effort than it normally would, but she manages to eventually tunnel away. Finally. Gawd.

    Eva: <-6 EP>
    Masamune: <-6 EP>

Masamune ain't no fool. Rather than Giga Draining the air in front of him, he holds his ground and waits for Eva to return to the surface. The ground beneath him begins to quake and out pops Eva; of course, since Masamune resists Ground, the Dig makes for a pretty underwhelming attack. Eva pants hard. Tunnelling in winter wonderland is hard work. Fortunately for Masamune, the billowing sand slowly seems to be sticking to the ice and adding traction. Taking far more care this time, he gingerly shuffles to Eva and sucks some health. Om nom nom. Dat's good HP.

    Eva: <-14 HP; -6 EP>
    Masamune: <-5 HP; +7 HP; -6 EP>

The two Pokes trade off their final attacks of the round. Masamune blasts his opponent with an Energy Ball while Eva, which causes Eva to let out a sigh. Her fighting spirit seems to be diminishing along with her health. Such a Defeatist. She then swoops in close before smacking her foe with a wing. Shenanigans.

    Eva: <-14 HP; -4 EP; Defeatist; -3 Att>
    Masamune: <-10 HP; -6 EP>

The Sandstorm chafes Masamune <-3 HP>.

    ‡ Post-Round ‡

    Notes:

    > Because Eva had to Dig through the icy paw print and the semi-frozen ground underneath, Dig consumed twice as much energy as normal
    > I've never reffed Defeatist before; it affects Att and SpA in the games but the Stratedex only mentions Attack, so I'm just going to treat it as a -3 Att (no point in making it a crappier ability than it absolutely needs to be, rite?)

    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 25 ‡

With all this sand and ice continuing to make a confuddling combination, Masamune keeps up his impressive lead. Using the last bit of energy he possesses, he stirs up another aggravating assault of leaves. Contrary to logic, the Leaf Storm further ups his ranged attack; meanwhile, the attack does a thoroughly impressive amount of damage for something that isn't even super effective. Masamune lets out a weary chirp and batters her foe with an assault of red energy orbs. Masamune falls down onto his tush.

    Eva: <-20 HP; -6 EP>
    Masamune: <-8 HP; -11 EP; +2 SpA>

Winning by no minor margin, Masamune takes a handful of sand, spits into it and molds it into something that looks like... a pile of sand, but it's supposed to be a Servine, I guess? So we'll just say it's a Servine. Anyway, even if Masamune's art skills merit a C-, the magic of the Substitute does its work and leaves Eva unable to tell the difference between her opponent and this sandy monstrosity. She attacks the sandy monstrosity with a series of melee strikes and destroys it. Bam. Masamune hangs his head. Nobody cherishes the arts these days.

    Eva: <-9 EP>
Masamune: <-10 HP; -2 HP fatigue; Sub: Broken!>

As the round winds down, Eva squawks out a blast of indigo-coloured energy. Masamune withstands the strike and glows silver before reflecting the power of the attack (and then some!) back at his foe. Eva shields herself with her wings, but it's no good. The birdie falls.

Masamune brushes a little sand off his shoulder. Next.

    Eva: <-18 HP; -7 EP>
    Masamune: <-7 HP; -4 HP fatigue>

The Sandstorm irritates Masamune one final time <-3 HP> before petering away.

    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 26 ‡

This battle keeps slogging on as Wolfsong releases her sixth and final Pokemon to the field. A little electrical canine appears in the short grass beside the ice print and snaps his jaws impishly. Having annihilated not one but two opposing Pokemon, Masamune doesn't look the least bit intimidated. However, Grey nonetheless recalls his Servine and summons a flaming fox-like creature instead. The critter is greeted by a Stealth Rock and a shocking Discharge of current. Not the best way to kick things off.

    Jay Berkley: <-6 EP>
    Masamune: <Switched out; -6 SpA>

    Lord Aed: <Switched in; -5 HP SRk; -10 HP>

Aed fights back by breathing out a dense Smog that lingers in the air before him like a shield. Jay releases a Flash, but the light doesn't penetrate this roiling green cloud. Bust.

    Jay Berkley: <-2 EP>
    Lord Aed: <-2 EP>

A gentle breeze slowly carries the Smog away as the fisticuffs continue. Aed belches out a heavy dollop of molten rock that sizzles against Jay's skin. The little dog lets out an irritated yelp (as one generally would generally be expected to do after getting smothered in effing lava; like how is he not dead) and responds by flinging a smattering of mud. The Mud-Slap catches Lord Aed in the face and reduces his Accuracy a tad. It's a good start, but Jay has gotta do a hell of a lot more than that if he wants to win this one.

    Jay Berkley: <-10 HP; -2 EP>
    Lord Aed: <-3 HP; -6 EP; -1 Acc>

    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 27 ‡

Jay gnashes his fangs and launches a quick snap of electricity at Lord Aed. Current rips through Aed's body and causes his muscles to grow rigid and unyielding. The Flareon is so distraught that he... he... h-he st-st-starts to cr-cr-cr-cr-cryyyyy. Oh gosh. Now you've done it. Jay is looking so sheepish right now that he may as well be a Mareep.

    Jay Berkley: <-6 EP; -2 SpD>
    Lord Aed: <-10 HP; -4 EP; Par>

Jay amps up the juice and Thunderbolts Lord Aed into submission. The Flareon's entire body locks up tighter than a Chick-fil-A on Sundays.

    Jay Berkley: <-8 EP>
    Lord Aed: <-12 HP; Can't move!>

And they're not done yet. With another blinding flash, Jay continues his mission to give Lord Aed irreparable brain damage. Having taken so much electricity that he should either have superpowers or be dead, Lord Aed impressively fights through the attack and responds with a spicy Flamethrower. It catches Jay in the face and elicits a yelp. See? Pain ain't such a pleasure, is it?

    ‡ Pre-Round ‡

    ‡ Round 28 ‡

Still standing in the short grass beside the ice paw print, the two battlers continue doing their thang. Jay moonwalks in a circle, summoning a rainstorm, which steals a little bit of pep from Lord Aed's ensuing Flamethrower. It's still got an okay amount of pep, though, so that's good.

    Jay Berkley: <-7 HP; -4 EP>
    Lord Aed: <-8 EP>

Lord Aed's body locks up with Paralysis as Jay spits out a dazzling yellow beam. It does damage but there's no accompanying stat boost for Jay. Wah-wah.

    Jay Berkley: <-3 EP>
    Lord Aed: <-7 HP; Can't move!>

A gargantuan bolt of Thunder rips downward from the heavens and electrocutes Lord Aed through and through. He tries to fight back with another Flamethrower, but the Accuracy of the move is off. It comes short, scorching the grass a foot away from where Jay is standing.

    Jay Berkley: <-10 EP>
    Lord Aed: <-14 HP; -8 EP>

    ‡ Post-Round ‡
