The "Prima official game guide" is only half useful: The cave with the two Team Rocket Members, Islands 4-7 and the second team of the Elite 4 aren't showed.

With the Safari Zone rares, you can use repels to help A LOT.

Most of the rares have levels that are in the midpoint of all the pokemon in the area, so by using repels you effectively double your chances of finding them.

Area 1: Repel with Lv25 pokemon in lead for Kangashkan
Area 2: Repel with Lv26 Pokemon in lead for Chansey
Area 3: Repel, Lv25 for Tauros
    Area 1: Repel with Lv28 for Scyther/Pinsir
Area C: Repel with Lv23 for Scyther/Pinsir (doesn't improve chances very much)

It's probably easier to buy Scyther/Pinsir however.

You know on Island four there's the kid who gives you stickers when you "Brag" about things. How many are there? And how do I get the 2nd-4th star on the Trainercard?

Stickers, like the trainer card itself have different levels.
There are 3 stickers, each with four levels.
Hall of Fame, Egg Hatches, and Multiplayer battles won (link cable/wireless)

    Sticker ------- Lv1 ---Lv2-----Lv3------Lv4
    Hall of Fame -- 1 ----- 40 ---- 100 ---- 200
    Eggs Hatched - 1 ---- 100 --- 200 ---- 300
    Battles Won -- 1 ----- 20 ---- 50 ----- 100

As for trainer stars, the first is beating E4, the second - getting 1st 150 in dex, the 3rd is getting 382 (Mew, Celebi, Lugia, Deoxys not counted)
The 4th is unconfirmed to exist but i've heard rumors that you must score 200+ in both Two Island games on wireless.

Aside from Eggs, most Stickers would be easy to get. You can use your "Dummy" version to get the 100 Battles, and the Hall of Fame is pretty easy too. However, due to the lack of Mach Bike and the fact that Island 4 is way too small, Egg Hatch is as slow as it can be. But the fastest way I reckon is to get a Male and a Female Magikarp. Breed 300 Eggs, store them in the PC. Then go to Saffron City (Back in GSC it was the best place to hatch Eggs.) and start hatching them. Magikarp Eggs take the least Steps to hatch (A bit above 1000), so, it should be easy.

Now, for those who played the original Red/Blue: don't you feel they made some Pokémon way too rare? In my first file, I never saw a single Chansey in the Safari Zone! Nor any Tauros. Kangaskhan also took way too much to appear, and even Pinsir. I never saw Pinsir in the Zone at all, and I bought it off the Game Corner... also, Slowbro is WAY harder to find. I attempted some Hooks, but never got a single one. Or do you have to swim to find it? Also, they removed Chansey from the Unknown Dungeon. WHY? I know that'd make the Lucky Egg easier to find, but it was HUGE Experience and an easier way to catch her! But now she's exclussive of the Safari Zone. They're evil! Ohhh well... I'll have to deal with it.

I think Chansey was removed from the Unknown Dungeon so it became a rarer Pokemon like the other rare Safari Zone Pokemon. At a high Level like most of the Pokemon in Unknown Dungeon it would have gave us lots of EXP and Nintendo probably didn't want that. At least there's the Elite 4 second wave for lots of EXP but you'll need to survive them all. Like Orion said there's also the chance of it holding the Lucky Egg and it would have been easier to get that if Chansey were found in Unknown Dungeon.

I don't know what it is but has anyone else noticed Pokemon is getting boring lately? I haven't played my Pokemon LG in about a month now and I don't feel like playing it to bother with completing the Pokedex. Pokemon Emerald has all those cool features but it doesn't make me want to buy it.

Well, it actually depends. It can get boring after a while, that's true. But somehow, I've never been as eager to play Pokémon as I'm now, ever since RBY. The Generation that bored me the most was GSC. The game kept on erasing, and after 10 restarts, I felt it way too tedious to pass the game over, and over, and over... and to boot, my Gold Version was a slow-pace game and way too long for Pokémon Standards. Whenever I was near to have a good Team, the memory erased. It was frustrating to say the least. At least it taught me to never buy pirate games again (Even though it was kind of an advantage, as I could set the time everytime I turned the game on.). It became so tedious that I even fell asleep in the middle of Training or Catching. My Blue Version also erased frequently, but being a shorter game it wasn't as painful. And well... I somehow preferred the feeling of the originals above the Gold's new Features and stuff.

I guess it's because you don't like this 3rd Generation, Andy. It happens in any kind of game. I hate Final Fantasy 8, and never get to go too far since it's annoying and painful. But one of my friends loved it and discovered everything there was. It's a thing of personal preference, it's not that the games are boring and whatnot. I'm enjoying this Generation as much, or even more than the Good Ol' RBY days. The new Pokémon, a Training System where low-tier Pokémon have a chance, improved, yet faster pace; and stable Save Files make me love this Generation the most. But in the end, it's a matter of preference. Maybe as you've been saying, you're getting bored of videogames, which also influences this lack of interest in Pokémon.

And well, I'm planning to buy Emerald. Unlike Yellow or Crystal, this one is worth the buy, at least in my eyes. It has enough add-ons to maintain you interested.

I played Yellow, Silver, bought Crystal but sold it before finishing because I didn't like it much and now I'm playing Sapphire and Leaf Green...
Well, I don't think pokemon will ever get boring for me, I like it since I was 14, now I'm 19, play it much better, know many more things and like it more than ever.
I still don't know if I'll buy Emerald or not because of my little deception with Crystal, but maybe it's worth it... What makes me think more about it it's the fact that I already have Colosseum, Sapphire, Leaf Green and I have friends who have Ruby and Fire Red, so that I can get almost all 386 if I want... so, what would I buy it for?

Mew is the only Pokedex reason why most people will be buying Pokemon Emerald. This Mew will be legal and not sharked like people having been doing because they want the 386 Pokedex data. You'll still need the Old Sea Chart before the ship will take you to World's Edge Island and Nintendo have made it a Nintendo Event as usual. Of course Pokemon Emerald has more features and is like an improved Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire but it's really just to sell itself more.

But it has different storyline, hasn't it? And plus, I will never have Jirachii or Celebi anyway, so I won't ever complete my Pokedex

Different storyline? Being able to catch Kyogre and Groudon is hardly good because most people have probably bought Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire by now. It does have some extras in it with Team Aqua and Team Magma but it just gives the game a new feel first time playing through. Jirachi was only on Pokemon Colosseum Bonus Disc (USA) or Pokemon Channel (PAL). Celebi has only been on the Japanese Pokemon Colosseum Bonus Disc. A lot of people play Pokemon now just to try and catch all 386 Pokemon and Nintendo always try to make it impossible.

I live in Brazil and couldn't get the Bonus Disc... but anyway, Celebi is impossible to get without gameshark or something like that =/

Hmm that's just one thing. Some new places, pkmn that aren't available in GBA versions, many many and many battles in the Battle frontier, and the one thing I want the most: the exclusive and great breeding capabilities... Magma Armor/Flame body trairs reduce the time for hatching, Ditto holding everstone will make easier to breed personalities, IVs heritage has been fixed, the berrys to fix EV values will be there, among other things... i won't buy anyother pkmn game until that one comes out, which means I won't get FR lol... at least for me, it's worth it

Let's say we had Yellow, Crystal and Emerald, all for the GBA. Yellow and Crystal would be remakes, of course. Of the three, I'd choose Emerald.

PKMN Master said most of it. It has the same storyline as RS, but "unified". You battle both Teams, each has a different Hideout, you'll find them in another places apart from the ones they were at RS. They'll wake up the legends, and then Rayquaza will kick in. Instead of catching either, you'll get Rayquaza first. The last GYM Leader and the League Champion change. Also, the RS Champion will be found somewhere after you defeat the Elite Four.

As for extras: if you're into proper Training, you'll love them. Natures have a 50% chance of being passed on if the Female or Ditto hold an Everstone when in the Daycare. The IV Glitch of the previous games is gone. Now the 3 IVs that are passed through Breeding will always be for different Stats, instead of being overwritten. There are also 6 Berries that now work as Anti-Vitamins. That means they lower 10 EVs to a certain Stat instead of raising them. Great for certain Pokemon you had feelings for but were badly EV Trained (Starters, anyone?).

But there's more. Some Abilities have another special effect in the field. Some halve the steps to hatch an Egg, as PKMN Master said. Others lower or raise the chance of Wild Pokemon appearing, and some others have field effects such as hearing the field cries more often, or cutting more grass with Cut. Aside from the ones that cut the steps for hatching in half, the most useful for me is the Ability that raises the chance of finding Pokemon with held Items.

Then there's the biggest add-on: Battle Frontier. A Theme Park for Pokemon Battles. There are diverse modalities and facilities for battles. They go from the well-known Battle Tower to a place where random things happen. You'll battle the Leaders of the Frontier when you prove your worth, and when you defeat each twice, you'll win a star in your Trainer Card. There you'll also find the rarest Berries of the Game: Starf and Lansat, that were unobtainable in the other games. Plus, the most charismatic Johto Pokemon: Smeargle and Sudowoodo.

You can also Re-Battle GYM Leaders for the first time ever. And there are the Move Tutors of FR/LG, PLUS many others that were GSC TMs. Also, you can get most Legendaries in this game too, including Mew for the first time legally. There's much more, but that's the main stuff.

All in all, it's a game worthy of the purchase. Let me tell you I've dissed all the Special Versions before, but I'm 90% sure I'll get Emerald. I say it's worth it. It takes the Pokemon experience to the extremes, I could say. As final words: GET IT DAMNIT!!

This has nothing to do with the current topic, but then the current topic has nothing to do with this thread.
I was reminded a few days ago that I don't have a Fire/Leaf version of my process for identifying Hidden Power's type in only three tries by using it on wild pokémon. So, I've cooked this up. Remember that I have a version for this somewhere on this board that works for Ruby/Sapphire, and there's also one on the GSC board for those games.

To use this method, start at Step A and read the directions. You will be told to go to a certain place and use Hidden Power on a certain pokémon. See what sort of effect the move has, and then see what it means for this step. At first, you'll probably be told to go to another step, but after a maximum of three battles, you will know what your Hidden Power's type is.

    A. Go to Mt. Moon and attack a Geodude.

    Super-effective: Go to B.
    Standard damage: Go to C.
Not very effective: Go to D.
No effect at all: Your Hidden Power is ELECTRIC-type.

    B. Go to Viridian Forest and attack a Caterpie or Metapod.

    Standard damage: Go to E.
Not very effective: Go to F.

    C. Go to Route 22 and attack a Mankey.

Super-effective: Your Hidden Power is PSYCHIC-type.
    Standard damage: Go to G.
Not very effective: Go to H.

    D. While you're here, attack a Zubat.

Super-effective: Your Hidden Power is ROCK-type.
    Standard damage: Go to I.
Not very effective: Your Hidden Power is POISON-type.

    E. Go back to Mt. Moon and into one of those little connecting passages. Attack a Paras; they're plentiful in here.

Super-effective: Your Hidden Power is ICE-type.
Standard damage: Your Hidden Power is STEEL-type.
Not very effective: Your Hidden Power is WATER-type.

    F. Go to Route 1 and attack a Pidgey.

Standard damage: Your Hidden Power is FIGHTING-type.
Not very effective: Your Hidden Power is GRASS-type.
No effect at all: Your Hidden Power is GROUND-type.

    G. Go to Route 1 and attack a Rattata.

Standard damage: Your Hidden Power is DRAGON-type.
No effect at all: Your Hidden Power is GHOST-type.

    H. Go to Route 1 and attack a Pidgey.

Standard damage: Your Hidden Power is DARK-type.
Not very effective: Your Hidden Power is BUG-type.

    I. Go to Route 22 and attack a Mankey.

Super-effective: Your Hidden Power is FLYING-type.
Standard damage: Your Hidden Power is FIRE-type.

Meowth has now confirmed on his Website that for the last Trainer Star you need 200 Berries in Dodrio's Berry Picking and 200 Jumps in Pokemon Jump. Now this seems very hard because when my brother and me were playing Pokemon Jump we didn't get many jumps done. Also to play Dodrio's Berry Picking you need three people and there's only two Pokemon games in my house.

Default heh, and I thought I was a thorough trainer...

...and then I go and hear about effort values and points. Sheesh, now I gotta start ALL over. I had discovered the egg moves, vitamin effects, and the 10% nature-personality effect. I have over 60 level 100 pokemon and THOUGHT I was on the right track to becoming a Pokemon Professor (in my own mind), but now I must begin anew. Thanks to McGraw for the EV distribution guide and andyizcool's additional info I found on these forums after searching for effort points.

It looks like my journey is now beginning as I dust off my old Sapphire game and start my new dual adventures with Leafgreen.

Sorry about my first message on here being a complaint, but in my search for new info about effort values I found this site.

My favorite pokemon: My Scizor named Vash (yes, in honor of the Trigun anime series) and My Marowak named Jack...and I'm pumped to see the Pokemon: Deoxys Destiny movie..woohoo..Deoxys vs Rayquaza..woohoo!

I figured if I've done this much work, I might as well try and get my pokemon where I'd like them to be...the EVs, IVs, etc are confusing and it will require a lot more time than I should be spending on a video game, but it'll be worth it... ... ... right?! Yeah I think (hope) so...

Plus: i really hope the fourth trainer star isn't to get 200+ on the jump rope and dodrio berry picking, cause not only is it extremely difficult...it's hard to convince my casual-playing friends to play with me for that long...sigh

But you never know when the next Nintendo Event might come up and you could own a few Newbies. Or in the very rare event that Nintendo makes a Tournament you're going to need some good EV trained Pokemon to battle with.

True, I remember entering a tourney at my local shopping center (I made a post regarding how the winner, an 11 year old kid, had a Kyogre, Rayquazza and Jirachi as his team). I did well though. I remember this really UU guy had a Stantler that worked, and another girl used this whirlwind spikes combo on her Skarm to see what Pokemon her opponent had. It was clever.

    But anywho.

I may EV train if that tourney returns. Damn William....HE'S NOT A MASTER TRAINER DAMNIT!

EVs are mightly easy to domain. Maybe it takes some more maths and knowledge to pull off working EVs in a competitive metagame, but in the regular gameplay, you can go with the basics.

For simple EVs, you just need to know the basics and have some way to keep track of them. A calculator and/or a paper work well. Also, be sure to know where to Train certain Stats, and how Attachments work. And it's not a waste of time. You'll train your Pokémon anyway (I guess...), so, you'd better train them off well.

In fact, using Vitamins and Macho Brace piggybacking, you'll have a fully EV Trained Pokémon before Level 30, and then, no more worries!

Yeah and I absolutely HAVE to get the gold award on sapphire's battle tower...I keep getting to around 70 or 80 victories and then BLAM it's all gone in an instance. My record so far is 86...whether it's me getting lazy (or cocky) and making a stupid mistake or just getting straight out beaten, that's the last thing on the game I have yet to complete...so I'm hoping with this IV/EV training system, I'll be able to finally get 100 in a row.

Oh, and if anyone has a chart or something that tells which pokemon give you what and how many EV pts; I'd appreciate it being posted...I've found 3 on the Internet, but all 3 have differing stats on them, so I was curious if any of you guys/girls had one that worked for you...

    Ciao for now

That was the same for me getting to 70/80 battles then just losing. This happened 5+ times before I actually got to 105 and I haven't lost yet. I used Zangoose (Physical Sweeper), Starmie (Special Sweeper), and Dusclops (Annoyer/Tank). So my advice to you would be keep trying and you just might get lucky to win that Gold Trophy, which looks very nice in my Secret Base. 8)

anyone have any suggestions on which common pokemon to train against who give good EV points on Leafgreen/Firered?

    HP x1: Caterpie
    Atk x1: Paras
    Def x2: Kakuna/Metapod
    Sp.Atk x1: Oddish/Gastly
    Sp.Def x1: Tentacool
    Spd x1: Pidgey

All easy to find and at fairly low levels so your hatchlings should be able to handle them.

Hello everyone, i'm an old pokemon veteran...i played my blue version for a couple solid years, learning about everything there was to know about the first games. then out came gold/silver and ruby/sapphire, and i played through all of them, but i got bored because i didn't want to have to re-learn everything i'd worked on. last time i visited these forums was october of 2003. i hadn't played pokemon since the two weeks i spent beating sapphire, but now, this whole LG/FR thing has me kinda excited...it's like re-living my very enjoyable memories of blue and red, but at the same time new and interesting.

anyway, my only questions for right now are on how to get Umbreon and Kingdra in the new kanto adventure? along with Mew those were my favorite pokemon throughout the series. Oh yeah, and could someone help explain EV's and IV's a little bit... or at least direct me to an area of the site that has an explanation, i'm a little lost. well i'll probably see you around, it's been a long time since i've been a frequent poster in different forums, so you probably won't hear from me too much, but i'll be reading, thanks for your help.

First you'll need the National Pokedex just beat the Elite Four and have 60 or more Pokemon caught. Eevee will only evolve to Espeon/Umbreon on Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald because they have a clock. Make Seadra hold a Dragon Scale and trade it so it evolves to Kingdra. Mew can only be obtained on Pokemon Emerald when you use the Old Sea Chart to go to World's Edge Island. The Old Sea Chart is obtained in a Nintendo Event like most rare tickets and things.

And such events are few and far between, as well as being in a place of inconvinence most of the time.

You can choose to be the male character (who's default name was always Red, not Ash, the show came out after the game you fools!) or a new female character that wasn't in the original RGBY.

Can anybody help me with catching the Legendary dogs. We, I know u can catch only one, but everytime I rn into him he runs like a little punk, or he roars when I trap him. He doesn't come to u when u have a pokemlon over the level 50, and it get's pretty exauhsting to sit in route 11 going in and out of th gaurding post and checking th pokedex like every 5 seconds. I don't have any more Master balls, well on my Emerald, but only one left cuz I caught Rayquaza. But, that's besides the point. Can someone help me or not?!?!?!??!?

o.O Uses Roar? Why the heck has that not worked for me?

    Umm

    1) Are you going about it with the Wobbuffet route? o_o I found that to be the easiest way for me to catch Suicune.

    2) If not, are you using someone that can Spore fast enough?

    3) Is there anyone with Mean Look/Spider web that has the ability SoundProof or Suction Cups?? I dun think so, so maybe a BPing plan? o_O Who the hell has BP and Mean Look though; 'sides the painter?

Aside from that I just kinda umm, played and levelled up some Pokemon until they were like Lvl 70 and then I railed those SOB's with someone fast enough to use something to put them to sleep
