I don't like the idea of a guide of what moves and strategies not to use, available all the time. Part of ASB is learning from your mistakes, and if you don't make them, then you wont learn. Having a list of moves/strats to avoid or make use of just seems like we're telling people how to battle and taking out the imagination. Like a team rate forum that provides a list of pokemon movesets and ignores anything that's different to those given sets.

Not a step-by-step proces, but just a newbie-guide which gives out a few pointers/hints. Ofcourse, learn-by-doing still applies here, but ASB is a vague thing for many and small threads like this should make the step-in proces easier.

Ok, some feedback at last (man I'm fucking busy).

First thing, on the breakdown of moves and strategies by Oslo and Denz I'm gonna go with Dan and Blade. However, I do think a newbie-guide would be in place. So instead of putting up a list of combo's, tactics, etc. we make a thread where pointers and hints are given (like the Torment-thing on 3x Thunderpunch).

Then, the mentoring thing. Well, I read it thoroughly and I feel that a whole mentoring system would be a bit overboard as most newbies find their place pretty quick, BUT we could set up a Tower of the Nubs. There you would find the newbie-guide I talked about above and - which is what I like most about your proposal - a room/thread/place for feedback, an explanation about the basics of ASB and where newbies can ask questions or review a battle afterwards (along with opponent and ref).

This kinda settles between both ideas I think, still leaving ASB as the school of hard knocks, while providing newbies with a place for basic info, questions, reviews and explanation.

    A thought occurs!

What happens if we, the Gym Leaders or Elite 4, want to give members of our regular teams the TMs we have? We can't very well battle ourselves for them, after all. So how do I, say, teach my infernape *Judgment? Or is that just not a possibility?

You ever gonna finish that thought, Darkly? Because you really don't say things like that unless you're hiding something.

Maybe we could pay points to learn our own TMs. And then, upon giving up payment, we hafta let two of our pokémon (the teacher and the... teachee, I guess?) go off somewheres for a week for "training". We can't use either one until said training is done.

I would like proof that Agility was ever used ONCE in the anime to avoid an attack. I am sick to death of people using it as an 'I win' button.

Just link ONE youtube video where ANYONE uses Agility to get out of the way of an attack...

I just finished watching up to the end of the Orange league and no one so far has even thought of it...

Since we are BASED of the anime, i would make sense that we follow the rules... And in the Anime they use agility LIKE quick attack, maybe we should change it...

AND don't give me that crap about it boosts the speed in the game, because a LOT of things in the game don't work here...

This is not a Youtube Video, but a Bulbapedia entry on that lists what it does in the anime...and has a list of episodes you can see said examples in. So..you can Youtube those episodes listed to see it in action.

..That's two for me Ayay :/

And you said you watched up to the Orange League, but some of those examples are from Kanto :/ Notably.. Farfetch'd.

And need I remind you that there are a lot of things in the game that DO work here.

Agility as a means of avoidance is perfectly logical, because when your opponent dashes off with a burst of speed you weren't expecting, merely as an avoidance tactic, it'll catch you off guard. In subsequent attacks you'll be used to that speed.

    Agility Used in the Anime
    Agility Used in the Manga

Fast Forward to 1:25 to see Agility used to Evade.

Fast Forward to 7:45 and watch the match from there. Falkner uses Agility as an Evasive Manuver.

Hate to nitpick, but that first one is a moot point. The whole point of that battle was Ash using Speed boosting techniques and attacks because Raichu never learned them and wouldn't be able to keep up. Agility wasn't used to evade, it was used to increase his speed to make evasion easier.

It was still used to Evade, therefore, point still stands that Agility and similar SPD + moves are used as evasive tactics and not just stat boosters.

Maybe the solution is to make it give +1 speed and +1 evasion. Matches what it does in the anime.

I say it every Northern summer...

We need more refs, AND more ways to keep them active.

As such, I propose ANOTHER ref bonus...

DOUBLE POINT SUMMER. (Triple point summer for any matches over 4v4)

Haha, I feel like we could offer refs fifty points for every battle they take on and it still wouldn't fix the shortage. You either have the free time/commitment or you don't and buckets of goodies probably wouldn't change that, right? But I dunno. I might be wrong.

Also, speaking of active refs... how's that contest reffing coming along, Ayeun? *shot*

I'm afraid to say it, but I don't really see points as all that big of an incentive to reffing more battles. It's probably because I don't really use them as it is unless to give them away at the tree, but ultimately the only thing that'll encourage me to ref more is to see more people battling and reffing.

I presently have nine battles going on as well as my four safari zone quests. If I get behind on them and they all pile up, I get burned out. As such, the matches take even longer for me to get to because I see so much work that needs to be done. It's unfortunate, but that's my only real explanation as to why things are the way they are.

Well, since ASB works more like the Anime than the game, there's really no reason for having a Scyther with +2 ATK to try and even out its edge against say a Scizor. I get what you're saying, but I think it's adding too much stuff to the system and refs already get bogged down with Abilities and all the Ability Boosts that some Pokemon can get.

I don't think it's worth adding since you can pull off a win with a Pokemon that has a disadvantage against an opponent, Say like fighitng a Breloom (Grass/Fighting) with an Absol (Dark), but limiting it so no Fire moves can be used. You can still pull out a win, even against a limiting factor like that. It's all about using your opponents strengths and weaknesses to your advantage.

    Also setting up crazy combos.

Ash, most of the gym leader's pokemon already know said TM move.

And those that do not poses moves of such power (Such as Judgment) that adding it to an entire team would destroy any and all challengers.

    RE: ASBDex

So, a couple of years back, Webmaster Jeff was talking about creating a sort of ASBDex that, when used, would detail all the ASB related information on any given pokémon. For example, if you looked up Charmeleon, you would go to a page that lists all of Charmeleon's and Charmander's moves and abilities from every generation (and any anime-exclusive moves) as well as their anime description for them. It would also have the sprites from each generation as well -- and, if we see fit, any customized sprites that some of us have thrown in there.

It'd basically be a one-shot area so we, as refs and battlers, don't have to constantly go to three or four different sources to figure out how an attack works, which I am all for.

Problem is, it's been a long time since that was discussed, and I'm not sure of how much effort was put into that. I'm proposing we, as a community, do a revival on that project.

    Anyone interested?

Sounds like a great idea to me, I'm up for lending a hand.

Link doesn't work, so far as I don't have the privileges to access it, so other people might not either.

It's from the Contributor's Forum -- I didn't think much of it, but it makes sense that most people wouldn't be able to see it.

Another thing I'll need to know for it is what kind of information should it have? Types and learnable moves are an obvious thing, but anything else?
