    Type: Bug

I poked around the areas near Ecruteak, training the two pokémon I figured would be the stars of Ecruteak Gym: Butterfree, with its Psychic attacks, and Scyther, who not only had physical-sweeper stats with moves other than Normal or Fighting, but was also about to become resistant to Ghost-type attacks. Sure enough, before long Scyther learned Wing Attack, I traded it over to Platinum, my Platinum trainer gave it a Metal Coat he'd pilfered from a wild Steelix, and sent it back to me. Scyther became Scizor and picked up Metal Claw.

I sent the Legendary Beasts scattering and then went to Ecruteak Gym. Butterfree dominated with Confusion, which became Psybeam partway through. The lesser trainers offered little to no challenge, and neither did Morty's Gastly. Against his Gengar, I opened with Sleep Powder, and the Ghost-type slept through the entire rest of its part in the battle, even though Morty used a Hyper Potion on it to prolong the inevitable. Then he sent out his first Haunter...and the battle went downhill in a hurry. This Haunter had uncanny accuracy with Hypnosis. I used up my Awakening and all of my Full Heals, and got a Scizor with nightmares and a Cursed Butterfree for my troubles before it finally went down. Then his other Haunter KOed Beedrill before Heracross managed - barely - to bring it down with Aerial Ace.

All I've got to say is, thank goodness that's over.

I researched pretty much all the types before choosing Bug. Depending on your criteria for what counts as a Fighting-type...that's either Heracross, caught the way I caught mine, or Poliwag. Poliwag might count because it evolves into the Water/Fighting Poliwrath. You can get the Old Rod in Route 32 and hook Poliwag in the pond in Violet City.

Route 32 is just south of Violet. You can catch Poliwag before you can catch Heracross. Remember, the starting Route in this game is Route 29.

Shit, I posted up an entire log and now it's gone for some reason. Crap. Don't feel like typing again, so I'll final-update when I beat Red.

Went back to Battle Frontier and took on Battle Factory Head a few more times, earning me a good twenty BP each time. I bought my Choice Band and off we went. Some more league training, before finding Red.

The battle itself was nasty. Since most of my pokemon weren't really powerhorses I needed to find another way. I was planning on using my by now notorious toxic spikes strategy, but that meant I wasn't going to able to use Sleep powder, which is always nice on higher leveled foes. So I gave Nidoking Stealth Rock and Focus Punch.

Pikachu was up, who faced my first pokemon Nidoking. He set up Stealth rock, took an Iron Tail hit which left him with 45%HP, then the next Iron Tail missed (lucky me) and I took it down with Earthquake.

Lapras, switch to Venomoth who Sleep'ed. Switch to Roserade (who had Choice Specs), Energy ball till death. Then Charizard came out, took half HP down by Stealth Rock leaving it wide open for Tenta took take it down with one surf.

Snorlax. Yikes. Snorlax are huge pain's in the ass so back to 'moth. Sleeppowder, switch, then Focus Punch twice. Got ya.

Blastoise. Surprisingly fast Blastoise. Argh. So send in 'moth again, who died since 100% acc Blizzard from the speedy tortoise did me in. Maybe it has Quick claw? Dunno. Tenta to the rescue with his uber sp.def and mixed attacks. My special attacks were useless here, but Poison Jab came through. Needed a Hyperpotion, though. Venusaur was last and wasn't a challenge seeing that now I could abuse the 100% Blizzards with Tenta.

    END!

    Team:

    (l.71)
    [Lonely] Fly | Cross Poison | U-turn | Roost
Starter, was pretty sucky halfway through, but managed to gain my favor again in the end with his through-the-roof speed combined with Choice Band.

    (l.73)
[Hasty] Surf | Poison Jab | Toxic Spikes | Blizzard
Kinda the star of this team, since most of my 'big-battles' relied on him. I needed Blizzard for all the dragons, Surf my ground-foes, etc. He's the fastest (yes even faster than Crobat, due his Hasty nature) of the team and that was always handy. Good run.

    (l.71)
[Naughty] Poison Jab | Rock Slide | Earthquake | Megahorn
My reliable physical sweeper. True, Crobat had Choice band and awesome speed, but I needed his versatile moveset. I used Mega Horn, Focus Blast, Focus Punch, Rock Slide (wanted Stone Edge, but got tired of battle factory), Poison Jab, Shadow Claw, etc. on this pokemon, which helped me greatly during my journey and it could even learn Sucker Punch, Thunderbolt, Icebeam, and more of that. Standard, solid pokemon.

    (l.71)
[Mild] Psychic | Signal Beam | Sleep Powder | Sludgebomb
Evil. Nothing more. I used Choice Specs on him for most of the challenge, but gave it to Roserade in the end. This is one of my favorite pokemon, he's awesome.

    (l.71)
[Impish] Crunch | Cross Poison | Earthquake | Toxic Spikes
Hidden talent. Never knew he was so good. Honestly, what a surprise. This thing has the power and speed of a sweeper PLUS the defense of a castle. Must use this more. If it wasn't for Tenta's much need move-advantage, this would've been the star of the team!

    (l.67)
[Rash] Energy Ball | Leech Seed | Stun Spore | Sludge Bomb
Disappointed. Grass and Poison aren't very good offensive types, which made training him quite the chore. He was useless in the league and only had a few moments with Red. Still, great stats and great, but pretty useless for me (as I only got a post-league anyway).

Well, it was a good run, now I want another monotype. Probably not HG/SS, though. I'm out.

Alright so last night I started, I picked Cyndaquil, just cuz he looks cool and i wasnt gonna use him anyways. I got to Cherrygrove got the egg, beat my Rival, WHO I NAMED CHEWIE! Anyways, I got to Violet city, raped the Sprout Tower and Falkner, and I went on to Route 32 and dodged all the Trainer. I picked up the Old Rod, and scurried back to Violet. I fished for what seemed like forever. Just an oblivion of magikarp. I finally found a level 10 Poliwag. Caught his shit reallll quick.

After that I finally went down Route 32, and started beating Trainers and wild pokemon. Poliwag was level 20 by the time I got to Azalea! I watched the little scene in front of the slowpoke well, then ran into Kurts house and got him to go to the well. I beat all of Team Rocket, they stood not a chance. So I did a little dance. With my pants. Off. HAHA I rhymed. Anyways, so then I went back and caught a Slowpoke and grinded him until I got Headbutt, then finally at level friggin 25 (i wanted to kill him) I got it. I found a tree that had pokemon, and I instantly found a level three Heracross. I caught it quickly. Then I went off to grind. After I was satisfied, I ruined Bugsy's day. then i saved.

    POLIWAG - Level 21
    HERACROSS - Level 19

Got my Radio card and beat the living crap out of Whitney. Wasnt even fair. Heracross OHKO Clefairy and Miltank with Brick Break. So yeah after she cried like hte little sschool girl she is i got my badge. Oh yeah and When Poliwag hit 25 it became a Poliwhirl. And saved.

Started the game up and mashed the FUCK out of the A button (This game is pretty slow compared to Pokemon Black.). Chose Totodile as my starter, named him Gobblegut for no real reason, then did all the mandatory shit until I beat Silver and got my Pokedex. I fought only the necessary Trainers up until I reached Elder Li, then headed straight for Falkner's Gym. It was a battle of attrition, but I finally managed to scrape a win with no Potions and 4HP left thanks to Gobblegut's Rage attack.

Once that was done, I bolted to the PokeMart and got my Egg, then wandered around lost for a bit before I figured out to go to the Pokemon Center, where I got my Pal Pad. From there it was a simple matter of trading with Darkly (Thanks again yo. ) for a Magikarp. And he has Dream World Bounce power so he isn't totally helpless until he hits Level 15.

Headed back to New Bark Town and began my REAL journey, grinding on wild Pokemon and making my way to Cherrygrove and Route 30, to beat up on the Trainers I passed earlier... Along the way, my Magikarp levelled up and learned Tackle somewhere on Route 32.

Anyway, messed with the Ruins of Alph and Slowpoke Well, before finally arriving at the Azalea Gym. I fed all of the Gym Trainers to Mr. Fish, who is now ready to engage Bugsy's Scyther in his toughest battle yet...!

    Speaking of rape trains, UPDATE.

So, after a few HOURS of tedious grinding, Mr. Fish finally gained the EXP necessary to take down Bugsy and his Scyther of assrammery. From there, I faced a NEW obstacle in the form of my dickbrained Rival and his Bayleef. MORE GRINDING for me.

After my 40th or 50th KO'd Zubat in the Slowpoke Well, I finally decided to try again, using my lone X Attack in conjunction with blind luck to eventually crit Bayleef to death. After that, I bolted through the Ilex Forest and Route 34, avoiding everyone I could, until finally I came across Lyra and her grandparents.

This was when I realized what needed to be done. If I was being put through the wringer by Bugsy and his Scyther, I absolutely DREADED my future with Whitney and her Miltank. And that was just the beginning of my worries... Morty, Jasmine, and Clair would be far worse.

And so, I concocted a plan... I scouted from the northwestern coastline of Route 34 through Goldenrod City to the southwestern edge of Route 35. It was a stretch of straight, uninhibited land over 120 steps long. Along the way back to Route 34, I got a Bicycle from the Bike Shop owner, then I rode back to the Daycare, gave Mr. Fish my Everstone, and bid him a tearful farewell.

From there, I began grinding in a different manner. Dozens, maybe hundreds of times, I rode my Bike up and down that stretch of Goldenrod and the adjacent Routes. It was a thankless job... My ADHD screamed at me to stop, but I kept pushing for as long as I possibly could. And when I finally returned, Mr. Fish had risen a staggering 18 levels.

We went back to Azalea Town and cleared out the Forest and Route 34, before I finally caved and stopped playing. Next time, Whitney will have a REAL reason to cry...

I salute you Blade, playing the entire game with just a Magikarp.

    Name: Lizz
    Type Steel
    Badges 4

I beat Whitney with ease - OHKO'd Clefairy with Ogama, and then switched out for Rocky to absorb the Rollouts and kill Miltank. Easy done. Beat up that damn Sudowoodo, and levelled in the grass for a while. Oh yeah, I changed some nicknames as well, most of the ones I've picked are goddamn awful.

Silver wasn't as easy, but was far from hard. Stryke and Titanium had a sweeping spree with the lot of them, and Rocky was there just in case. After that, I decided to go and catch a Magnemite instead of challenge the beasts just yet.

Went to the route on the left of Ecruteak and caught a Magnemite, named him Steve. Yeah, I couldn't think of anything and good ol' google translate wasn't there for me :'( Grinded him a bit, and went to get the legendary beasts.

Listened to Eusine talk his crap, and set the legendary beasts off to do whatever legendary beasts do. Searched for Entei for a bit for the sheer hell of it, and managed to get in paralysis and a hefty chunk of damage before I got bored and challenged Morty.

Morty was giving me a lot of trouble - with the majority of my pokemon either really slow or really frail I didn't really have much option but to succumb to sleep constantly, and because I thought I was a genius and wouldn't need them, I didn't even take any potions or awakenings. It was a stupid idea. After losing to him about 5 times, I won on the sixth and grabbed the fog badge. With my pretty new badge in tow, I headed out towards the lake of rage.

Because I like to be different, I always do the lake of rage and the rocket base before I head out to kick Chuck's ass. I just caught the red Gyarados, and I'm just about to start beating all of the Rockets.

(Oh yeah, I evolved Stryke and Rocky somewhere in there, I can't remember when though. I'm fairly sure it was after beating Morty.)

Name: Ethan (I like keeping things canon.)
    Type: Water
    Reason: MR. FISH
    Badges: 3
    Progress:

Progress has gone from slow to nearly a standstill. In my rush to level up Mr. Fish, I forgot that the little bastard isn't going to listen to me at Level 40+ with only 2... or 3... Badges.

So yet MORE GRINDING. Riding around, giving him items and haircuts everyday, waiting for him to randomly stop Splashing and getting me killed...

Finally, we MIGHT have been ready for Whitney. After like 20 hours. Fucking fun.

The good news is that the training seemed to pay off: Whitney's Trainers were all brushed aside with ease, and when I got to Whitney herself, her Clefairy dropped to a single Tackle.

Then Miltank came out... Good God almighty, you people can NEVER bitch about Whitney's Miltank again. Not after I had to kill it with a Goddamn Magikarp. After a few rounds of Stomp abuse and Flinching, Mr. Fish started to randomly not listen again. I started taking Rollout damage and had no choice but to to switch in the HM Pokemon to sponge it up. After it finally missed my Geodude, I switched Mr. Fish back in and used Bounce. Another Rollout, and it obviously missed. Unfortunately, the Bounce didn't do enough for a KO. One Super Potion later, and the battle of attrition was on: Tackle VS. Milk Drink, Bounce VS. Rollout, Flail VS. Stomp, and Gobblegut VS. Attract. It was a thankless fight, but a critical Tackle from Mr. Fish finally did the damage needed to bring the cow into beatable levels. From there, Whitney was whittled down bit by bit until she fell.

A Plain Badge in hand, I headed north and beat up on Trainers on Route 35, in the Park, and Route 36. Sudowoodo was a bit annoying, but now my troubles REALLY escalate: With only 5 Bounce attacks to use against Morty's army of status afflictions and Curses, how will I manage to win my next Badge and retain Mr. Fish's loyalty... and MY sanity...?

It might be possible for you to max out Bounce to 8 PP before taking on Morty. According to Serebii and GameFAQs, there are two PP Ups you can pick up now or soon with the help of the Dowsing Machine; one is outside the Pokéathlon Dome and the other is in Route 39. Supposedly there is also one somewhere in Mt. Mortar; I don't know if you can reach it without Surf. If not, you can also get a third PP Up from the Radio Tower's lottery; it's the prize if you have a pokémon with a trainer ID that matches the ones digit and tens digit of the selected number.

    Name: Seth
    Type: Bug

As I did with the Itemfinder, I headed back to New Bark and Surfed close to everywhere I could to collect stuff and fight trainers for EXP. I also fought a lot of Poliwag in the process, and along the way I even met a wild Poliwhirl, whom I caught and gave an HMer name. Then I headed for Olivine, and along the way I also met and caught an HMer Farfetch'd.
After briefly puttering around Olivine, I set sail for Cianwood, beating all of the swimming trainers along the way. When I arrived in Cianwood, though, I discovered that I'd forgotten something important; I hadn't bothered to visit Jasmine in the Lighthouse! As a result, Cianwood Pharmacy wasn't interested in giving me any super-medicine.
Well, I certainly wasn't going to Surf all the way back just for that. With Butterfree in the lead, I stormed Cianwood Gym. On two occasions Butterfree was kayoed by a Rock Slide, and each time Scizor stepped up and Wing Attacked the foe into dreamland. Badge in hand, I picked up the Fly HM, and pulled Aviator the Farfetch'd out of the PC, replacing Spelunker for now.
I Flew back to Olivine, and knowing I'd be fighting Jasmine's Steel-types soon, I put Heracross in the lead. Heracross destroyed every trainer in the Lighthouse with ease. I spoke with Jasmine, then Flew back to Cianwood, got the SecretPotion, Flew back to Olivine, gave it to Jasmine, and then followed her to the Gym.
Jasmine's two Magnemite were non-issues for Heracross. Her Steelix, though, was five levels its senior, and Brick Break didn't do much to it. I eventually lost Heracross to a well-placed Iron Tail. I tried Butterfree next, with a Sleep Powder/Psybeam combo, but that only lasted for so long before Steelix used Rock Throw the turn it woke up and hit. Down went the Bug/Flying-type.
Finally, I sent in Scizor, and a war of attrition proceeded between the two Steel-types. Metal Claw did piddling damage, helped only marginally by scoring the Attack-boost effect once, but Steelix somehow felt keeping up a Sandstorm was important while fighting a Scizor, and Iron Tail didn't have as much accuracy, so - despite Jasmine's two Hyper Potions - Scizor eventually managed a win.
That was not a fun battle for me. I think I'd like to get in some more raising before continuing the plot...and I know just the place...

Say, hey, you sure do play when there's no computer in the way of your fray, eh?

Name: Ethan (I like keeping things canon.)
    Type: Water
    Reason: MR.. FUCKING. FISH.
    Badges: 7
    Progress:

So, with Mr. Fish's power a good 20 levels above everything else, grinding on the routes around Ecruteak before tackling Morty wasn't even really necessary. I mean, sure, I got a few more precious Ethers, Elixirs, and PP Ups before the fight, but by the time I went to the Burned Tower and beat Silver's face in, there really wasn't a need. Tackle was enough to murder everything corporeal, and after the three Legendary Beasts fled in terror of my deadly Magikarp (Though Suicune DID stay long enough to acknowledge its better, so I give it props.), I went to curbstomp Morty.

...Yeah, that's really all there is to it. I guess I didn't realize just HOW much of a difference that level difference made Mr. Fish, but his godlike level combined with the naturally shit defense of most Ghost Pokemon meant that only a few Bounces were needed to even take down Gengar. Sucks to be him.

My Ether supply down by one and my Badge count UP by one, I was feeling cocky enough to continue normally without grinding, taking the remainder of Routes 38 and 39 by storm and basically murdering everything on my way to Olivine Lighthouse. My Magikarp even managed to bitchslap Entei just because it got in his way. It ran away, little bitch that it is.

At the lighthouse, I heard Jasmine's ellipses-soaked spiel about the sick Ampharos. Sweet, time to Surf. With home field advantage on his side, Mr. Fish clobbered everything in the ocean and then took Cianwood by storm as well, Tackling Eusine to death and Bouncing Chuck into submission. I also got a Shuckle, some medicine for the Ampharos, and a Fly HM. I withdrew a Hoothoot named HM Owl from my PC and added him to me team, thus completing it: I now have Mr. Fish, 4 HM whores, and a Shuckle to generate some Rare Candies for me.

With 5 Badges under my belt, I decided to prepare for the Steel nightmare in a different way. Mr. Fish would be loyal until Level 70, but grinding him for more EXP wouldn't be THAT helpful against Jasmine's Steel Pokemon. So, my stockpile of money at an all-time high from destroying young Trainers' dreams and selling pricey items and Gym TM's, I returned to the Goldenrod Department store and bought as much protein as I could, which I force-fed to Mr. Fish until he had the muscles of a Super Saiyan... if that Super Saiyan were a fish, of course.

Back in Olivine, it was time for battle. Mr. Fish had been bred, fed, and trained for war. It was now or never. With a 10+ level advantage, we attacked.

Jasmine's Magnemites were, surprisingly, more annoying than her Steelix was. Their levels were lower, yes, but the fact that there were 2 of them combined with their electrical attacks made the slow battle even slower. We actually started fighting BACKWARDS. That's how slow it was. Mr. Fish patiently yet fervently Tackled the first Magnemite, healing almost every third turn or so, and then Steelix brought the battle to a dead halt. In the end, I had to actually Struggle past its resistance and slowly, slowly heal my way to getting that 6th Badge. Good thing I stockpiled on healing items earlier in the trip. I was hoping the Struggle strategy would stay dead, but against Jasmine, it just wasn't going to work.

After what might have literally been a few hours, the battle was over and I was finally able to continue to Route 42 and Mahogany Town. I got a RageCandyBar and then headed to the lake said candy bars are named after, scouting the underwater forest maze to the west and then engaging the Red Gyarados... HERSELF?!?

I switched priorities (just this once) for a few minutes and restarted the game so that I could get some Great Balls. Then I returned, had Mr. Fish beat that big red bitch down, and promptly caught her. Her name is now Mrs. Fish, and she will one day bear Mr. Fish's murderous Splashing offspring.

Fun's over, time for plot. Lance and his Dragonite (WHICH WAS WEAKER THAN MR. FISH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA) showed up and led me to the Mahogany Rocket Hideout, where fuck the plot everybody died the end. I also picked up some goodies and another Protein during the raid, as well. I fed THAT one to Mr. Fish too, effectively making him into the fish equivalent of an Ascended Super Saiyan.

Unimportant world domination thwarting aside, I decided I'd had enough of crushing young Trainers' dreams and decided to crush an old one's dreams, instead. Enter Pryce of the seventh Gym. I navigated his skating rink, his blubbery Ice Pokemon offering some resistance but not a whole lot. Certainly less than Steelix, that's for sure. Cue me getting Badge #7 and, funnily enough, TM #7. Which was Hail. Pfffft, trash. Good money, though.

Next it was time to go murder the candy salesman blocking my path, but before I could I received word about weird radio transmissions coming from Goldenrod City. I busted out HM Owl and returned to the Johto equivalent of the Big Apple, ready for my third and final throwdown with Team Rocket...

    Reason: You know why.

So, first things first, Mrs. Fish joined the team! Her power of boosting team morale (and by 'team,' I mean 'Mr. Fish') would come in handy soon. But first, Team Rocket needed an ass-pounding.

...Well, what can I say here? Mr. Fish Tackled a LOT of Poison Pokemon. Koffing, Ekans, Grimer... There were a couple of Magnemite in there solely for Mr. Fish piss-off value, but aside from that there really isn't much to go into detail over. Mr. Fish was a good 30+ levels ahead of EVERYTHING. Proton and Ariana didn't stand a chance.

So, with Johto saved from the oppression of Team Rocket, I made my way back to Mahogany Town once more and navigated the Ice Path, where I gave Mr. Fish the last vitamin he could possibly ingest before he would eat no more. Mr. Fish was now the Magikarp equivalent of a Full-Power Super Saiyan. It was time...

I arrived in Blackthorn City and had the Move Deleter erase Splash from Mr. Fish's movepool; that way if Struggle was needed, I'd no longer have to waste 40 rounds before I could use it. With Mr. Fish's humble roots now behind him, he engaged Clair's Gym, utterly annihilating EVERYTHING in his path before finally confronting Clair's Gyarados. Evolution VS. resolution... Who would win?

...If you didn't answer "Mr. Fish.," you are a fucking retard. A few slaps of his tail, and Mr. Fish felled Clair's leviathan, followed by her two Dragons. Kingdra was the only one to really pose any semblance of a threat, but in the end even it fell under the weight of Flail.

Needless to say, Clair had her trademark shit-fit and sent me to the Dragon's Den, where I clobbered every Trainer, pissed in the fountain, and won the approval of Clair's grandfather, as well as my Badge.

One black eye on Clair's part later, and I had my Badge AND my TM. More cash. Time to-

GAH! PLOT! OK, well, Elm called, so I took Routes 45 and 46 back to his place, roflstomping all the Hikers and their Graveler before Elm told me to go to Ecruteak Theatre. Fair enough, those Eeveelutions were very tasty to Mr. Fish, as well. Though Vaporeon's bulky HP made it my least favorite in a hurry... Anyway, with that done, I headed to the Whirl Islands and HOLY SHIT LUGIA ERUPTING FROM THE WATERFALL I LOVE THAT CUTSCENE

...Ahem. So now, the Legendary Pokemon Lugia was Mr. Fish's opponent. And Lugia was indeed Mr. Fish's most worthy enemy yet. The two Pokemon exchanged intense blows, Hydro Pump for Tackle and Aeroblast for Bounce! It was an explosive battle! But in the end, even Lugia succumbed to Mr. Fish's nigh-immeasurable power. Twenty Ultra Balls later, and Lugia was mine. As per tradition, I named the great beast of the ocean floor 'Challenger.'

One orgy with the awe-struck Kimono Girls later, now-a-man Ethan left the Whirl Islands behind and headed home to New Bark Town. A quick pitstop later, and we were on our way across the pond to Kanto, where four challenges even greater than a Legendary Pokemon awaited us...

    Name: Seth

With Chuck's and Jasmine's Badges secured, I made my next move a return to Cianwood, to train my team by clearing out Routes 47 and 48. Then, with that done, I flew to Ecruteak and headed east, clearing out every part of Mt. Mortar that I could reach without Waterfall.

As I was doing this, the need for various HMs and my outsized number of battlers and HMers became annoying. I realized that, given the locations of certain late-game HMs, I could make Hydronaut redundant until Blackthorne by giving Surf to EarthMover for now...but shortly after that, it also occurred to me that Beedrill was underperforming. I studied the matter and concluded that, ultimately, the only thing Beedrill stood out for in this party was poison. Poisoning the opponent wasn't really my style in the long run, especially since it prevents Butterfree from putting the enemy to sleep, and there aren't really any targets that Poison-type moves are great against...that Bug-type moves aren't also great against.

So, in Mahogany Town, I deposited Beedrill and went up Route 42 with three battlers, which meant each earned EXP four-thirds as fast. I had Butterfree put the Red Gyarados to sleep on Turn 1, and then Psybeamed it to death while it slumbered. This convinced Lance to invite me on a Team Rocket-stomping tour of the Mahogany Rocket Base.

I was surprised to discover that, in Heart/Soul, each Persian statue can only activate once. With that revelation, I decided screw the switch, and battled the same two Rocket Grunts at every single Persian statue for extra EXP. I also made sure to fight every last Voltorb, Geodude and Koffing in the minefield. Just because I didn't care about the switch, though, didn't mean I didn't take the time to pummel the TR Scientist guarding it.

I proceeded to clear out the rest of the base in an orderly fashion (how exactly does your character know Petrel's imitation of Giovanni is bad? When did you ever see or hear Giovanni before this point in the game? Did his position as Viridian Gym Leader mean he appeared on TV now and then?) and recieved the Whirlpool HM from a grateful Lance. Then I headed down to the Gym, and between Brick Break and Metal Claw (with a what-the-heck Close Combat at the very end), dispatched the Ice-type trainers and won the Glacier Badge.

As I left the Gym, I got a call from Prof. Elm telling me about Team Rocket on the air. I checked my Pokégear and discovered that the rats were broadcasting on every possible frequency. It was time to head to Goldenrod and pull their plug!

Default Re: Single Type Pokemon Playthroughs!!

    The time has come.

Name: Ethan (I like keeping things canon.)
    Type: Water
    Reason: You know why.
    Badges: 8
    Progress:

I made my way along Routes 27 and 26, destroying every Trainer in my way to the Pokemon League. I was pleasantly surprised to find Victory Road relatively clear of Trainers, but that was compensated for when I realized I'd forgotten to bring any Repels. Goddamn it...

At the end of the Road, Silver caught up with me and GODDAMN IT A MAGNETON. Luckily, Mr. Fish's level kept the annoyance to a minimum, but still, that resistance... Meganium, on the other hand, was amusing to Bounce to death. Everyone else, same basic shit. Silver went off to presumably commit suicide, and I entered the Pokemon League. After selling all my excess stuff once more, I had a good quarter of a million Funland dollars to spend of Full Restores, Revives, and Hyper Potions. I also decided to return to the Goldenrod Department Store at the last minute and grab some X Attacks just in case. Upon returning to Kanto, Mr. Fish and I nodded to one another, then we headed through the doorway to face the Elite Four...

    Will

Will has never been very threatening, and against Mr. Fish, he upheld that reputation. His pair of Xatu weren't too troublesome, and Jynx and Exeggutor were plain easy. As usual, Slowbro was the biggest annoyance, its incessant Cursing blocking off Mr. Fish's attacks for a good 15 minutes. But with my level of prep work, I got through eventually and continued onward.

    Koga

Goddamn fucking Koga. That's about the best way I can describe this match. Typically, my Pokemon incinerate, fly-by, or simply crush Koga's monsters before they can even start their status attack parade. But Mr. Fish's... conservative method of battling made this hellish. If not for Bounce and Mr. Fish's huge level gap, I doubt I'd have even passed that infernal Giga Draining Ariados. Then came Muk, whose Black Sludge-Minimize-Toxic combo kept me at irritating bay for a good half an hour until I finally Flailed it down. But that wasn't the end of my troubles: Forretress came next, and I didn't want to waste all my PP-restoring items Bouncing it down. Eventually I eked out a lucky win when the damn thing Exploded and knocked Mr. Fish down to 8 HP. One Hyper Potion and one Elixir later, and Mr. Fish took on the somewhat-underwhelming-by-then Venomoth. Crobat fell last, after Double Teaming me into wasting an Ether or two. One round of healing later, and Mr. Fish and I were on our way to...

    Bruno

Honestly, this wasn't too bad after Koga. Hitmontop fell to Bounce in short order, and Hitmonchan's Thunderpunch was simply not powerful enough to deal out the damage faster than I could heal it. Onix... Onix's Sandstorm was little more than an annoyance, and even with Dragonbreath paralyzing me every few rounds, the stone serpent's defenses were whittled away and it eventually fell. Machamp came out next and died to a spamfest of Bounce and Flail, leaving only Hitmonlee to oppose me. Its defenses were sturdy, and its Swagger was an irksome move, but that Swaggering actually helped by boosting my power. A critical Tackle or 4 later, and Hitmonlee was done. Time to move on.

    Karen

Karen... The bane of the Johto Elite Four since my childhood. She would prove once again to be the toughest member of the Elite Four, even managing to do something never done before...

As always, she opened with her Umbreon, which used a delightful combination of Double Team and Confuse Ray to chew away a good 5 of my turns or more before it started taking damage. Slow, slow damage... I won't dwell on it, though, because it was the NEXT Pokemon that finally proved to be Mr. Fish's match... That Pokemon, of course, was Vileplume. My first attempt to Bounce it out of the fight missed, which resulted in Stun Spore Paralyzing Mr. Fish. A quick Full Heal, and he was ready for action, Bouncing a nice chunk of health off Vileplume... who responded with her signature Petal Dance attack, blowing Mr. Fish's health clean into the red. No problem, one Hyper Potion and-

    PETAL DANCE CRIT.

    ...Mr. Fish... had fallen...

Now I was mad. I sent in Mrs. Fish as a shield while I Revived Mr. Fish and powered him up. When Mr. Fish was ready to fight again, I swapped him in and began Bouncing, X Attacking, and Bouncing some more. No more crit Petal Dances came out, and eventually Vileplume fell from its own Confusion. Next up was Gengar, who endured one Bounce too many and had to be Struggled to death. Slow, but sadly unavoidable. Murkrow was next; as usual, it isn't really worth mentioning. Though it DID Whirlwind HM Weed in and take her out... At last, there was Houndoom. And that bitch's Nasty Plotted Dark Pulses and Flamethrowers REALLY gave me a run for my money. I used their own power to fuel a few Flails, but the fight was still close. Too close.

Once the hellhound had fallen and Karen had given me her spiel about strong-and-weak Pokemon (like I didn't know it from kicking her ass with a Magikarp...), I used my Potions and Elixirs to power Mr. Fish back up to maximum one last time, before removing his slightly useless Muscle Band in favor of Brightpowder. It was time to face the Champion...

    Lance

Deja vu, the final opponent in my challenge was a Dragon user who opened with Gyarados. Like with Clair, this fight wasn't TOO troublesome, but having Flail used against me was a bit annoying. Luckily, Brightpowder made it miss at least once where it would have REALLY sucked to be hit with it. Next came Dragonite-T - that is to say, Lance's Thunder-wielding electrical Dragonite. THIS was annoying. Thunder's shitty accuracy coupled with Brightpowder eased the pain, but Dragonite's demigod stats kept it alive and eating my PP like candy for longer than I'd have liked. There's only so many PP-restoring items in this game, you know. Once it finally fell, I was pretty much done Bouncing. Which of course meant Aerodactyl was next.

I've really never viewed Aerodactyl with much interest, but I have a new respect for it after this fight. A combination of Onix's and Magneton's unholy defenses and the speed and power of a Flying type... Usually it doesn't last long enough for me to have to deal with. Thunder Fang, STAB Rock Slide and Aerial Ace... It came so close to KO-ing Mr. Fish again.

It was time to kick things into high gear. I started spamming Hyper Potions and X Attack/X Speed/X Defense in alternation. Eventually I went on the offensive and brought the terror-saur down. From there, it was all downhill. Dragonite-B (Blizzard Dragonite) came next and fell more quickly than his brother. Even with Thunder Wave and STAB Dragon Rush, Mr. Fish had come too far to stop. Next came Dragonite-F - the final, Level 50, Fire Blasting, Outrageous, Hyper Beaming boss of the Dragons. Mr. Fish and this legendary brute squared off, exchanging blows for what felt like hours, until finally Mr. Fish Struggled the Dragon down.

All that left was Charizard. Charizard and 2 Ethers... I Tackled, Flailed, and Bounced with everything I had. There was no way I would lose now. Charizard's Air Slashes, fangs, claws... They bounced right off Mr. Fish's armored scales, and Mr. Fish got another Hyper Potion and took Charizard down.

The credits rolled... And one cutscene later, I was on the S.S. Whatever, ready for my next quest.
