Pain of Loss
"Why?"
A thought that had often went through the mind of a young man as he layed all alone on his bed. One that used to belong to him and his expecting wife. He could still picture quite clearly the events of days before.
=============================================
He and and his wife were at an outdoor cafe just sort of relaxing and enjoying a nice meal of pasta.
"What's so funny?" Ash asked a giggling Sabrina.
"Nothing. The baby's just moving around a lot." she said. She was just weeks away from having a child.
"Well it won't be long before it'll be in your arms and you can control it." Ash said.
"Do you have to keep saying 'it'? It sounds like I'm having something not human." she said.
"Well we don't know if it's a boy or girl yet, do we? That is, unless you have some sort of Psychic intuition." Ash said, glaring at his wife.
"Sorry, that's one of the few things we can't do." she said. The two finished and paid their bill. They left, but something, or rather someone was out there. Someone was trying to target Ash from the shadows. He was a member of the long gone Team Rocket, who had run away when Ash had sent all of them to prison and was back for revenge.
"Team Rocket will live again, especially once you die." he said.
"Hey Ash, what do you think we should name our child?" Sabrina asked.
"Well I think Sara sounds nice for a girl and---" he said, cut off by seeing something from the shadows.
"Gotcha!" the Rocket said, pulling the trigger on his sniper rifle. However his aim was off and instead of hitting Ash, Sabrina was the one to fall.
"What!? Sabrina!" he said. He then saw from where the shot came. "Thunderwave!" he shouted, sending a charge of electricity at the Rocket and paralyzing him. The police got him while Ash kneeled next to Sabrina. "Are you okay, Sabrina?" he asked. No answer. He then noticed that, despite the Rocket's bad aim, the shot had hit Sabrina right in the heart, killing her instantly. "Sabrina... No..." he said, starting to cry over his fallen lover. She was taken to the hospital so that perhaps the child could be saved, but the girl she was carrying also perished. This put an even bigger dent in Ash's feelings.
=============================================
"If only that Rocket's aim had been accurate... I might have died, but at least Sabrina and her child would still have lived." he said to himself. Ever since that day he had been rather depressed and more or less just stayed in his room, thinking about what had happened. He just couldn't help but feel so sorry for Sabrina's death since he was so devoted to protecting her and since the bullet that killed her was meant for him. "(I...I've got to get away from here. Perhaps returning home might ease the pain. But will it ever go away?)" he thought.
The next day he packed up and headed from The PokéMasters (Author's Note: It just isn't a PA fic without the place.) and headed for his home town of Pallet City. He was just as sad as when he left TPM, but at least there were those here who could comfort him. He went to a familiar house and knocked.
"Hey mom. Are you there?" he said.
"It's so nice to see you again, Ash!" she said, opening the door. Her attitude changed when she saw the look on his face. "Ash? Is...something wrong?" she asked.
"Yeah, there is." he said. He went inside and told his mother about what had happened between him and Sabrina and how it ended.
"I'm so sorry Ash. It was nice to hear you got married to someone you loved and were about to be a father, but it's so sad having to hear that Sabrina died." Delia said.
"Not dead, killed. Someone tried to kill me and got her instead." Ash said, falling deeper into his depression after having said everything.
"It'll be okay. Maybe next time things won't go so badly." she said.
"Next time?" Ash said, starting to get a little angry. "What do you mean 'next time'?" he asked.
"Well aren't you going to at least try to find someone whose shoulders you can cry on besides mine?" Delia asked. Ash just gave her a look that screamed 'Are you f***ing crazy!?'.
"Just...nevermind." Ash said. He headed to his old room, where he once again shut himself inside and stared at the ceiling. Later that night he got a phone call from Lance.
"Hey Ash. It's been a while. Listen, I heard you had returned but where's Sabrina?" Lance said.
"She's dead." was all Ash could say.
"What happened?" Lance asked. Ash gave him the whole story. "Ouch. Sorry, man. I'm so sorry to have to bring that up." he said. Ash didn't reply. "Do you have Sabrina's Pokémon on you?" he asked. Ash glanced at the six Pokéballs on his belt. Inside them were an Abra, a Kadabra, an Espeon, an Alakazam, a female Mr. Mime, and a Starmie, the last of which Ash had given to Sabrina as a Christmas present the previous year. They were the only ones to be kept on Ash's belt.
"Yeah, I do." Ash said.
"Well I don't really want to say this, but until we can find a replacement for Sabrina, do you think you could be a temporary Gym Leader in Saffron Metropolis?" Lance asked.
"I'll try." Ash said. Sabrina's Pokémon had learned to listen to Ash since the two were married but now that was going to be put to the test.
=============================================
Months had passed. Ash was still doing fine as a temporary Gym Leader for his late wife's gym. In fact he had an almost perfect record going in which the only losses he had suffered were to trainers who used only Dark-Types, which was a very rare occurence. The other Gym Leaders, Jasmine and Misty moreso than others, often popped in to give their condolences and just to check on Ash's well-being. He was starting to turn into what Sabrina once was: cold and emotionless. (Author's note: PA cold and emotionless...a very scary thought, no?) The reason Jasmine and Misty checked in so often was that the two actually cared for the suffering Pokémon Master. Then one day...
"So how are we doing today?" Misty asked.
"...Okay." Ash said in a cold tone. Misty couldn't take it anymore.
"Listen, Ash. The rest of us are starting to get worried about you. You've got to let it go. Sabrina maybe dead, but life goes on." Misty said.
"...Maybe, but I still have my feelings for her." Ash said still in a cold tone.
"What feelings?! You seem almost like a robot from sitcoms. Lighten up a bit." Misty said.
"You don't understand." Ash said.
"Me not understand? Listen I know it must be tough to lose a loved one, but it can't go this far. You're making the same mistake Sabrina did by not letting her sorrow go. Give it up." Misty said.
"But I still love her." Ash said. He got smacked across the face by Misty.
"Sorry, Ash. However to love someone so far as to give up everything else is just crazy. There are others who would like to help you but you just brush them all away...like me." she said.
"You?" Ash said in a tone of almost shock.
"To tell you the truth, I love you. Please Ash. I only want to help." she said.
"I...I don't know what to say." he said, his shock starting to bring his feelings back.
"How about thanks for bringing you back to normal?" she asked, hugging the near normal person standing before her. "I may not be Sabrina, but I think I'll be a nice enough substitute. Just give it a chance." she continued.
"Thank you. And with time, I'm sure you'll be right." Ash said.
Time went on. The two eventually got married, something Ash had his doubts about because he still had some feelings for Sabrina. However he put those aside in his heart where they wouldn't do any damage but would still remind him of what he once had. Not too much later the two wound up with twin girls.
"So what do we call them?" Misty asked.
"Sabrina and Sara sound like nice names." Ash said.
"I understand Sabrina, but why Sara?" Misty asked.
"It's a nice name and that's what I wanted to call the child Sabrina was going to have if it was a girl, which it was." Ash said.
"I see. Well I guess that won't be so bad." she said. A figure watched from the shadows.
"Well, Ash. Despite all of your suffering you now have a nice family. I'm just so sorry I couldn't have been with you forever like I planned." the blue-haired woman said before vanishing into thin air, crying at the fact that she wasn't going to see Ash again for a very long time or perhaps forever. However she was comforted by the fact that her former beloved was happy once again.
The End
--------------------------------------------
Okay, we still have a posting limit. Much better, though.
All of this is the result of my rather brief Dark period. I'm not sure if I'll ever make another short story again.
Up next: Time for a long saga to be reposted. Some major battles, heroes who always seem to get the crap beaten out of them, dangerous and very evil enemies, love, sorrow, anger, and a whole lot of destruction to come. Gundam fights and battles of destiny all set. Time for the Gundam trilogy and Legends of a Pokemaster.
