Default Return to Combat Disco - BTPoke vs. Mikachu - Ref: Oslo

This will be a 3 on 3. No banned moves.

Though this won't be a Gym match, we'll use my old Gym as the arena...

    Spoiler:
Quietly tucked away in what is now the decaying downtown core of some unspecified Norwegian city, Combat Disco was once the face of the local nightlife. Though the dilapidated venue has long been closed to the public, rumour has it that the old dance floor is still a viable arena for daring folks who sneak inside to illicitly battle. Booting up the old sound system will reveal that the music here still has a strange influence on the dancers.

Every time a Pokemon on the field faints, the musical genre changes and brings about a new effect. Even if a Pokemon has the Soundproof ability or is battling with their fingers in their ears or is attempting to destroy our indestructible speakers, it doesn’t matter: no Pokemon can avoid hearing the music no matter what.

Once the music ends, the accompanying effect will come to an end as well. The following is a list of the various genres and their effects:

    ‡ Category O ‡

Top 40: This style of music always plays from the beginning of the match until the first Pokemon faints; it possesses no additional effect
Reggae: This style of music always plays after four Pokemon have reached 0 HP; after the next Pokemon is released but before commands are issued, the Gym Leader and then the challenger will openly declare one move known by the opposing Pokemon for it to “forget” for the duration of this effect

    ‡ Category A ‡

Easy Listening: Both Pokemon may only use one damage-dealing super effective move per round
Punk: The first Pokemon (ie. top row or lefthand column of the reffing template) receives +4 Att/+4 Def and the second receives +4 SpA/+4 SpD
Emo: Every action there’s a 20% chance a Pokemon will disobey its trainer’s orders and use Fake Tears instead (the Pokemon will manage to use Fake Tears regardless of whatever other status effects are in play, including but not limited to Sleep or Taunt, or even if they can’t actually learn Fake Tears)
Screamo: Both Pokemon come under the effects of Torment until the music ends
Rap: Both Pokemon come under the effects of Taunt until the music ends
Tribal: An irreplaceable weather effect that negates any other existing/future weather effects occurs

    ‡ Category B ‡

Oldies: Attacks are either increased or decreased in power depending on the Generation of their introduction:
    Generation I: +5 HP | Generation II: +3 HP | Generation III: +1
    Generation IV: +/- 0 HP
    Generation V: -1 HP | Generation VI: -3 HP | Generation VII: -5 HP

Dubstep: Attacks are either decreased or increased in power depending on the Generation of their introduction:
    Generation I: -5 HP | Generation II: -3 HP | Generation III: -1
    Generation IV: +/- 0 HP
    Generation V: +1 HP | Generation VI: +3 HP | Generation VII: +5 HP

Country: Both Pokemon may only use moves with names that are nine characters or less (including spaces and punctuation)
Chiptunes: Both Pokemon can only use moves they or their previous evolution learn by TM/HM

    ‡ Category C ‡

Heavy Metal: Both Pokemon have their ability changed to Heavy Metal
Rock: Both Pokemon have their type changed to Rock
Polka: Both Pokemon have their ability changed randomly at the end of every round
    Folk: Both Pokemon become typeless

    ‡ Category D ‡

Classical: In addition to their regular movepool, both Pokemon may use any move learnable by Kricketune

The choice of music, determined by the referee, is not completely random. There is a 40% chance the genre of music played will be selected from Category A, a 30% chance it will be selected from Category B, a 25% chance it will be selected from Category C and a 5% chance it will be selected from Category D. The DJ should bear this in mind while selecting music. As well, the DJ is reminded to inform the battlers what the change in music will be before the change actually takes effect.

Though the dance floor and ceiling used to retract to accommodate Water-type Pokemon and weather effects respectively, these features have fallen into disrepair and are no longer functional. It's possible there may still be a pool of water beneath the floor. Who can say?
The first to respond can choose whether they wish to release first or second. Whoever releases second will be the first to attack.

    Who's game?

Alright, Rosalina, let's kick this dance-themed battle off in style!

Start things off with a Quiver Dance to stylishly dodge that Iron Tail.

Next, Shadow Sneak out of the way of that Megahorn

    Finally, use Moonblast!

    24K Magic - Bruno Mars

Ahhh! After ten thousand two years I'm free back! It's time to conquer Earth ref an ASB battle once again!

Two seasoned ASB vets, BTPoke and Mikachu, have ventured into the dismal remains of what was once a proud and pumpin' Gym to engage in some fisticuffs. Who will claim victory? Who will be left with naught but three piddly points with which to staunch the gushing emotional wounds left by the shame of defeat? And who else has this Bruno Mars song stuck in their head like basically every day? I don't know, but it's time to find out!

Throwing Pokeballs onto the old dance floor, the trainers release their first fighters. With bursts of light, BTPoke's go-to Gardevoir and Mikachu's aloof Absol take to the field. Time to battle! Rosalinda, usually the faster of the two, bides her time and waits for her opponent to strike. Suddenly, Mesmeritse's tail turns silver and she dives at Rosalinda ass-first. However, with a grand jeté, Rosalinda avoids the attack. As she lands, her stat parameters increase. This is like a PSA for exercise.

Rather than attacking ass-first again, Mesmeritse decides to strike with her noggin, which seems like it should be a better strategy. However, it doesn't succeed: Rosalinda dissolves into shadows, evading Mesmeritse's Megahorn. The Absol looks left and right, awaiting the inevitable. Faster than you can say "Cicero," Rosalinda reappears and lashes out with a Ghost-type strike. It's not the most potent attack in the world, given the typing at play, but it's better than nothing. Marginally.

Rosalinda, who looks to be enjoying herself quite a bit, attacks with a shimmering stream of pink energy. The powerful move sends Mesmeritse skidding across the dusty floor until she collides with a upturned pool table. However, she manages to get back up, beaten but not dismayed. After her two previous failed attempts, she decides to try out Plan C, which is actually Plan A all over again... and this time it works! Her ass-first attack trips Rosalinda, causing her to tumble to the ground. The Gardevoir grimaces as visions of Absol fur stoles dance through her head. Mesmeritse had better watch out.

    Ah, how I've missed this.

Throw up a quick safeguard, Rosalina, to stop any trickery.

Next, use that hip-swaying beat to your advantage and go for a charm with those sick dance moves!

Finally, attack him with a Moonblast. Make that moon shine bright like a diamond!!!

or a disco ball, take your pick.

The shenanigans continue! Rosalinda utters a spell under her breath, causing a silvery veil to materialize and drift over her body. However, before it settles into place, Mesmeritse howls. Suddenly, a large black hand made of energy emerges from her body and whizzes across the battlefield. The hand latches onto Rosalinda's Safeguard with a single Snatching motion and drags the protective veil over to Mesmeritse. The Absol smiles as the Safeguard becomes hers. Finders keepers.

Rosalinda is pissed. However, being a seasoned professional, she doesn't let her true emotions show and instead smiles sweetly. This display of Charm lowers Mesmeritse's offensive prowess. Suddenly, the furry fighter begins spluttering as though trying to cough up a hairball, but what she ends up spitting out definitely ain't no hairball. A purple blob of Toxic gunk flies through the air and hits Rosalinda right in the face. As DL would say, it's like a money shot from a Muk. Nasty.

Rosalinda isn't looking quite as peppy as she did when she started the round, but that's not going to stop her from going all-out with a mighty Moonblast. The gleaming strike sends Mesmeritse flying across the room and over the side of the bar, where she lands on a pile of empty liquor bottles. She jumps onto the bar and locks eyes with Rosalinda. It almost looks like Mesmeritse is trying to study her adversary. This tactic is successful; Mesmeritse's stat parameters rise.

Though Rosalinda significantly widened her lead last round, Mesmeritse still managed to pull off some successful status shenanigans, so it will be interesting to see where the match goes from here. And speaking of interesting, BTPoke decides to make the unusual call of returning Rosalinda to her Pokeball. He summons a new fighter instead: a formerly diabolical barn swallow with a ridiculous French accent. Sacre bleu! Mesmeritse speaks some kind of menacing incantation aloud, but Lord Félix does not feel a thing. He smirks. Surely zees leetle Absol can do better zan zat!

Things aren't looking too hot for poor Mesmeritse, but the indomitable Absol keeps up her fighting spirits. She finds an empty Jim Beam bottle and rakes her claws down the side of the glass, creating a sharp and unpleasant sound that really ruffles Lord Félix's feathers. Supremely irked, the Swellow despot glows with blue light and then flies forward like a rocket. He collides into Mesmertise, dealing a great deal of damage. He manages to save the landing and tries to retaliate, but for some reason he cannot. The memory of Mesmertise's Torment still has him irked. He instead decides to give Mesmertise the glowering of a lifetime. If angry stares could deal damage, this would be a critical hit.

Okay, Mesmeritse, you did well Tormenting that Swellow.

Go Nefernefernefer, my female Ampharos with Static Ability! Her name comes from Mika Waltari's book Sinuhe the Egyptian.

    Start things off with Thunder!
    Then Thunderbolt.
Finish with yet another Thunder, this is an all-out offensive!

If he switches to a Ground-Type Pokemon, Hyper Beam and Giga Impact!

    Hehe.

I like this opportunity you're giving me, here.

    Felix! Retreat for now!

I'm sending out Veronica, my (normally) oddly colored jolteon!

Of course I don't expect you to somehow fanagle a 3D version of my old af pixel edit. You can use a regular Jolteon model if you'd like, I don't mind.

Anyway! Not a ground type, so we're good to go!

Veronica, Fire off a return-to-sender toxic from our good old friend Rosalinda.

    Next, use Shadow Ball!

After a tough round, Nefernefernefer is looking for ways to get back into the game. While she strategizes, Veronica treats her to miniature concert, complete with all the high-pitched Jolteon wailing you could ever want. Nefernefernefer winces, wishing her flappy little arms were long enough to plug her ears. However, what her arms lack in ear-plugging capability, they make up for in punchy power. She lands an unpredictable Dynamic Punch on her opponent, who begins to stumble around in a daze. Let the Confusion hax commence.

Veronica continues lurching around uncontrollably. Instead of landing an Echoed Voice, she ends up careening into a pillar, causing some damage to her little noggin. Nefernefernefer goes for another Dynamic Punch, but the unpredictable nature of the attack causes her to land only a glancing blow on Veronica. Tough luck, sheared sheep giraffe thing. Tough luck.

Still Confused, Veronica manages to hold onto enough sanity to unleash another Echoed Voice. In a parallel universe, the attack is doing three times the amount of damage done by the first Echoed Voice. Unfortunately, in this universe, the one in which Confusion borked Veronica's plans, the attack is every bit as piddly as the first Echoed Voice of the round. Delighted by her opponent's misfortune, Nefernefernefer cuts loose with a super-powered assault of chi energy. The attack sends Veronica slamming back into that pillar. Nefernefernefer bounces in delight. She ain't doing too shabby.

Nefernefernefer, use Facade, to take advantage of your Poisoned Status!
    Next up, a Headbutt.
    Finish with another Facade.

If she uses a dodging maneuver called Dig or brings on Lord Félix and uses Fly, Double Team in the meantime.

OK, quick question concerning the limited usage of moves from Chiptunes:

In terms of the fact that we can only use moves that the pokemon can learn through TM/HM.... Does that include TMs from ALL gens, or only gen 7?

Because if it's the former, then this is gonna be a fun round.

    ROUND NINE

    Chiptunes:
Green Greens - Kirby's Dream Land

Neither Pokemon on the field is looking too great as our battle enters its ninth round. Veronica lets out a sudden bark, causing a golden wall of light to materialize before her. She smirks. Ain't no sheared sheep giraffe thing gonna take her down without a fight! Nefernefernefer responds with a familiar strategy. A smattering of bright yellow stars spin through the air and pass through the Light Screen, losing some of their momentum in the process. The resulting attack is only half as strong as before. Nefernefernefer gives Veronica the glowering of a lifetime. As far as angry stares go, it's a critical hit.

Feeling quite safe in her position, Veronica finds a nice soft corner of the dance floor, curls up and falls asleep. Suddenly, many of the scuffs and abrasions all over her body begin to fade away. Hooray for beauty sleep! As Veronica dozes, Nefernefernefer keeps her Swift game going hard. However, thanks to the Light Screen, the move doesn't hit its target quite as hard as Nefernefernefer would like. To make matters worse, her energy has now bottomed out. Say it with me: gulp.

Still slumbering away, Veronica begins to mutter something under her breath. Suddenly, a rather crude-looking Jolteon plushie appears in front of her. However, the magic of the Substitute has Nefernefernefer's brain all in a dither. The poor, fatigued Ampharos is unable to tell the fake from the real deal. Her next Swift attack rakes across the plushie, causing it to spill a little stuffing, but it stays intact. Meanwhile, the real Veronica happily slumbers away. I guess the night life isn't for everyone.

Green Greens - Kirby's Dream Land

Still snoozing away, Veronica continues her Sleep Talk shenanigans. She dishes out the strongest Attract that an unconscious yellow porcupine dog thing is capable of dishing out, but alas, Nefernefer doesn't swing that way. The move fails. Nefernefernefer, meanwhile, decides to fight back with her ten gajillionth Swift. She does insignificant damage to Veronica's Sub. I honestly thought Chiptunes would be more interesting than this.

It's Sleep Talk time again! This time, Veronica uses a move she hasn't used in a few rounds. A rippling sphere of darkness materializes before her and zips across the field, striking Nefernefernefer with full force. However, the Ampharos, who is still clinging to life, fights back with a... wait for it... Swift! Talk about unexpected!

Veronica wakes up and quickly resumes battle mode. Sparks jump and pop around her body as she channels an electric jolt in Nefernefernefer's direction. Thoroughly shocked, but not exactly hurting from it, Nefernefernefer responds with a tackle of epic proportions. The Giga Impact pins Veronica's Substitute against a bar, causing it to explode in a maelstrom of cloth and stuffing. When the plushie parts settle, Nefernefernefer is revealed to have faintedfaintedfainted. RIPRIPRIP.

'Kay! Now I see through all of your strategies and have made up my mind and release my FINAL Pokemon! And the name is...

    *drum roll*

    Manashi (Male Whirlipede) Swarm

I need some experience for this little bug.

    So, for starters, Infestation!
    Next, Sludge Bomb.
    Steamroller finishes this round.

If the brave bird Lord Félix switches in before you have time to Infest, spam with Double Team. If someone uses Attract, Protect, but only twice in a row!
