I don't know for certain, but I'm willing to bet it lasts until you switch out, just because you can't use it again until after you've switched out. If you try, nothing happens and you've wasted a PP.
I knowI doesn't work how it is supposed to in game but if you use focus energy does it "increase" your chance for a critical hit on your next turn only or until you switch out?

Hmm... I'm not an expert on this subject, but I've read somewhere that it sets your critical hit ratio to a certain amount in RBY, an amount less than what Slash and Karate Chop would do normally. Anyway, Focus Energy's effects last until you switch out.

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.
In RBY, Focus Energy brings the critical hit rate to about 75%, which is lower then Slash and the rest. If, for example, Machamp uses Focus Energy, Karate Chop's critical hit rate will actually go down. That's really all there is to it.
