In that case, there's no reason for Flying-types (or Levitaters/Magnet Risers) to be immune to non-ground-based Ground-type moves such as, say, Mud-Slap or HP Ground... yet these moves inevitably "miss" Flying-type targets, even when said target isn't using an evasive maneuver (such as Fly). What's so special about a Mud-Slap or HP Ground that they should always miss Flying-type targets when Toxic or HP Water don't? Also, what if the Flying-type Pokemon is Sleeping or Frozen? Shouldn't it be susceptible to Earthquakes in such a condition? But I've never seen a Flying-type struck for Earthquake damage when it's Sleeping. (Mind you, it probably just hasn't come up, but I'd like to see how the ref would handle it.)

Anyway, I realize I'm probably overthinking this. I tend to do that. My point is that, IMO, it's a whole lot less messy to simply say that Flying-types possess the exact same sort of biological immunity that those other types possess. When a Flying-type is under the effects of Gravity/Smack Down/Roost, the Pokemon loses its ability to fly and, correlatively, it also loses its biological immunity to Ground-type moves. When a Flying-type is Digging, it does not lose the biological immunity. Slippery situation suddenly made a whole lot less slippery.

But of course, that still seems silly... because, as you point out, Mew's Charizard friggin' is under the ground and therefore touching it so it should still take some sort of damage from the violently shaking earth, right? Maybe I'll take that sort of thing into account in the future. I don't know. If I do, for consistency's sake, Dark-types should always take some sort of damage from Zen Headbutt (it's still being hit with a head! heads hurt!), Ground-types should always take some sort of damage from ThunderPunch (why shouldn't it do at least as much damage as Mega Punch, mirite?), Steel-types should still take some sort of damage from Poison Jab (but prolly not a lot), etc. Again, there are a hundred and one weird scenarios where immunities make no sense.

(Also, going back to the Tri-Attack/Gengar example... what is a Tri-Attack if not a Thunderbolt + Ice Beam + Flamethrower combo, just weakened a fair bit? This sort of combo would still hit Gengar, but Tri-Attack because of its Normal-typing does no damage. That's sort of the weirdness I was addressing. There are plenty of ways to rationalize this weirdness, of course, by saying Tri-Attack simply exudes Normal-type energy and that's just the way it is and there's no other explanation needed... but I'm just saying if we're operating within a framework that compels us to entertain this kind of weirdness, then an underground Charizard taking no damage from an Earthquake isn't that preposterous.)

    Anyway.

Maybe this is a conversation for the chat thread?
In the case of moves like Poison Jab on steels and TPunch on ground types it would probably be better to ref them as normal type moves with a power compromisation, since the thunder part of the TPunch would be the main cause of damage, but there's always the inevitable impact of the punch which is going to do damage or at least sting a little from the blunt force. Not to forget that this is anime style battle, so everything should be a little more logic operated than in the games; where in the games making a certain number of moves that should normally have no effect on a Pokemon have an effect is confusing and difficult to judge, in ASB there is definitely a certain amount of human intervention involved so it's a case of 'would this do damage? Are there outside factors involved that are going to change the effect of this move? Would it logically hit? What is the base of the immunity? Biological or physical?' and working from there. I dunno, I think that sometimes immunities should be taken less literally and more like a rule of thumb for when in doubt. I don't see the problem of having them do damage when they really should. It may be messier this way, but far more logical and realistic, which is arguably the point of choosing ASB over in game battles.

I'm fine if a ref interprets immunities that way. It is, like you said, more realistic. I'm also fine if a ref chooses not to, though, because we're working within a frame where realism often goes out the door. (Hey, I'm a Dratini who just Shed my Skin and now the lethal Poison circulating through my bloodstream isn't there anymore! Yippee!) Since the creatures we use are basically magic, I'm fine with certain wacky hijinks (like underground Charizards taking no Earthquake damage). The line has to be drawn somewhere; however, when it comes to the inherent wackiness of immunities, I'm fine with the ref choosing where exactly "somewhere" might be.

Considering my stance on the infamous "AIM FOR THE HORN" debacle, it should come as no surprise that I support this. I hate how in the games type resistance allows you to outright defy the laws of energy conversation, Newtonian momentum, and thermodynamics. Personally I'd love it if type immunity ceased to exist altogether. Make moves like that do 1/4 or 1/8 damage; making it impossible for this to hurt this is just fucking stupid.

First link works Blade, but it links to 15 BILLION photos...
and uhh....realism went out the door when you said Pokemon. LOL

    Ok srs reply.

I'm in agreeance (and awe) about type resistances/nullifications/advantages/wahthaveyou. I never did get the whole "Flying type is underground, but E-quake still does not work" bananagans because it defies logic. And trust me, I've seen many an argument about why ground moves would not work(My favorite is the Nathan Petrelli principle).

I'm in favour of just saying "they don't work because they don't work, lol, pogeys be crazy" and moving on. :3 But I get why that stance wouldn't necessarily appeal to anyone else.
