Well, all the information can be found around the ASB.
There's a lot of reading, but once you've read it, it's somewhat simple to comprehend, and you can always come back and reference it.
By the thing above the pokeballs, I'm assuming you mean title? Like how mine says "Underdog"?
You can change that by clicking on your name at the very top (Should say "Welcome Emerald_Gen.3"), clicking "User CP" and then "edit your details"
There'll be a box that says custom user title, and you can change it from there.
And with ranking up... If you mean evolving, there's a whole guide on evolution found on the first page of the Approval Tower. If you're talking about badges, then the Tower of Ascended is what you want.
Keep in mind that this isn't like the games, and becoming champion won't happen overnight.
Additionally, you had a question about catching pokemon. You can buy eggs as well as take a trip through the Safari Zone. Both of these cost points, which can be earned through battling.
Most questions you may have should be able to be answered through the rules section that Era pointed you to, or through appropriate locations.

Oh! I'm pretty sure that is based on post count. That's something the overall forum looks over.
You'll notice that Moderators have 8 great balls, and admins have ultraballs.
Just be active, and over time it will increase. It does not affect play in the ASB, however!

you pretty much need to set up a reasonable starting team of 4 pokemon.

by reasonable, that means no legendaries, and all 4 pokemon must be basic stage (like ralts or surskit).

you must choose a gender, ability, and nickname(although nickname is optional) for each of your pokemon.

once you're all set, post your team in the approval tower and you should be all set.

The newbie Emerald decides to take on Ash in this 4 on 4 duel! He and his opponent nimbly send out their pokemon into the whispering forest.
Psycho concentrates his mind very hard. As a result, he not only learns Spike`s ability, he even creates perfect copies of himself all around the field. Spike merely smirks at this. With his arms swinging in circles in the wind, he whips up a harsh sandstorm. The sand passes through the fake clones and the images disappear.

Psycho +1 evasion, -5 PP
Spike +1 evasion, -7 PP



Psycho, disappointed at his failure with the clones, tries another session of CTRL+V. The sand doesn`t stop blowing and it once again blows away his copies. Spike looses sight of the ralts, he stares focusing his eyes on something that reminds him of Psycho and sends a blobby ball of toxic at it. The shape turns out to be a simple rock.

As Psycho vanishes into thin air, Spike begins to plan out all the bad things he`s preparing to do to the Ralts.

With all this traveling around the field, Psycho slowly focuses his mind to calm himself. Spike searches the forest, its beautiful sucked into the sandstorm, and spots a still statue. Not sure if this is another doppelganger rock, he carefully fires a pack of explosive seeds its way. Psycho, not paying attention to his surroundings, takes the full hit.

Psycho -10 HP, -3 PP, +sp. attack, +sp. defense
Spike -3 PP



With his cover blown, Psycho lights up his eyes with blue and shoots blue lasers at his target. Spike`s body envelopes in a red light. It aches each time he tries to make a move, but he manages to snap out of it and shoots out more of the dangerous seeds.

Psycho`s body outlines in a white aura and he splits into several copies. The cacnea knows what to do, another sandstorm brews.
