Default 2004-2005-2006 TPM GSC Monotype Challenge

First off all, sry RaZoR LeAf for stealing your thread title and subject. But you made quit an intresting activity and I thought why not do the same for GSC...I always enjoy it better then RBY... I don't know if it will make the same impact, since I'm quit new here, but what ever. Let's give it a try:

    Rules:

~You play through either Gold, Silver or Crystal using pokemon of only one type (including Duel types who must share the chosen type)

~If your chosen starter is not of the type you picked, you are forbidden to use it.

    ~Legendaries are not allowed.

~No matter how stuck you get you must not use any other types.

~You are allowed to use only ONE set of TMs. This includes trading between other versions of GSC and also RBY.

~Trading for evolution is allowed (Machamp, Alakazam, Golem, Gengar). You may trade between GSC games, so long as you do so, when you reach the place said pokemon would naturally appear (ie, Paras at Ilex forest)

~After you pass certain events or feel the need to update, you reply to the topic with details on how your progress is going, the status of your team, how hard it is, etc.

~You may have only ONE member of a famly in your team. That means no duplicating a pokemon to fill your spots. No having two Pikachus to fill out your team.

The challenge is considered complete upon the reaching, or defeat of Red(aka Ash).

Question: does the rule against getting pokémon by trade sooner than you could catch them in your own game also apply to items? For example, I'm seriously considering a Steel game. You can get Onix at Union Cave, fairly early on (in fact, you can get a single Onix in Violet City by offering a Bellsprout in trade with an in-game trainer.) Could I immediately trade-evolve that Onix into Steelix, even though I personally can't get Metal Coats until I've reached Route 38, and probably won't want to get them from there until I've also gotten the Thief TM from Team Rocket's Mahogany base?

This sounds interesting, plus I've never actually played through the entire game

I'm torn as to which type to choose among my three favorites: Poison, Grass, and Psychic.

    @ Poryhedron: Go ahead...Actually:

You are allowed to link if the pokemon's evolution requires linking. So Kingdra, Steelix, Scizor can be gotten early in game by trading. BUT you can't trade an onix, horsea, scyther, etc from another game so that you will have them in the start! The link is only approved when you have caught the pokemon in it's orginal habitat...

@CNN: Take Poison, they pawn...plus they are UU!

I'll take the Fire challange, methinks. I'm playing on Crystal, but when I get to the Sudowoodo route, where Growlithe is caught, can I trade a Vulpix over from silver? Because they are technically found there, but are version exclusive.

Default 2004-2005 TPM GSC Monotype Challenge

    Monotype Challange
    Type: Fire
    Version: Crystal.

As you've guessed, I picked Cyndaquil at the start of the game. It was a female. I trained him up a bit, as Falkner's birds were equipped with mud-slap, which, if working alone, can really hammer poor Cyndaquil.

We got to Violet city, thrashing trainers and fighting Pokemon like Hoppip along the way. I avoided the Poliwags and kept Cyndaquil at high levels. It took a while, as I made sure he was a couple of levels above the trainers, so battling the wild Pokemon was a pain.

Once Cyndaquil learned ember we went to the Sprout Tower and demolished the Bellsprout's. Cyndaquil got to level 14 and evolved into Quilava. Huzzah!

I wandered around to the left of Violet and, being Crystal, I caught myself a Growlithe. He was level 4, so I raised him extensively against wild Pokemon. At the moment he's level 9. I'll try and raise him to level 12 to take on Falkner.

Default 2004-2005 TPM GSC Monotype Challenge

    Monotype Challenge
Type: Poison, not the OU hybrids like Gengar nor the not-real-poison-types-to-me like Vileplume or Victreebell...But the UU poisons like Arbok, Muk, etc...
    Version: Crystal

I picked totodile and defeated the rivals chikorita. I immediatly dropped him of at the box when I got my first Poison type: Spinarak. I trained Spinarak around Cherrygrove until l.5 and defeated the trainers on the way to violet. I trained him in random grass areas until l.10 and then took on Sprout Tower.

I defeated the whole bunch, got the HM and Spinarak was l.12. I trained him to l.13 and swiped the gym trainers. L.14 was my precious bug when I took on Falkner. I lost 5 times and suddenly remembered that I could get another poison: Zubat(btw:i'm planning on training Golbat not Crobat) I'm now training Zubat in the areas and he's reached l.6...

    Current status;

    Ariathne/Spinarak [F]: l.15 - Poison sting_Stringshot_Scary Face_Constrict
    Tantalos/Zubat [M]: l.6 - Leech Life_Supersonic_-----_-----

    Location: Violet
    Gym badges: none

btw: Sry Brit Chris to copy your update post, but it seemed kinda kewl...

I took Cyndaquil. I defeated Tom[that's my rival's name]'s Totodile and caught a Lv 3 female Hoothoot, Insomnia. Then, I put my Cyndaquil on one of my PC boxes. I caught a Lv 3 male Rattata[Betrayer] and released Cyndaquil. I trained both Betrayer and Insomnia until they reached level ten.
Then I finished the Sprout Tower and defeated the Gym Leader of Violet City, Falkner.

    Haha thats no problem

    Progress:
After spending a car journey training up the two fire Pokemon, Falkners Gym seemed like the best bet. Growlithe was level 12 - good enough, if you ask me.

We stormed past the Bird Keeper's and faced bird-boy himself, Falkner. Pidgey proved no problem - at half the level Quilava was, a few embers defeated her. Pidgeotto emerged, and after a sucession of smokescreens, the bird's attacks went everywhere except Quilava. However, after a critical hit mud-slap hit us, Quilava finally succumbed to the slap de la mud.

Out came Growlithe. Ember hit, critical hit (I love Crystal) and we won! Got badge Number 1 and danced.

After that, we went south from Violet and through that tunnel. Damn me I forget the name. Anyway I taught Mud slap to Quilava, and she handled the Geodude's well enough I guess.

We emerged in Azalea, and did that crap regarding the Slowpoke. We then went to the Ilex forest and fought the Rival!

Growlithe whipped Gastly, but Croconaw slapped both Growlithe and Quilava silly.

    Damn.

We went back. Growlithe whipped Gastly, but yet again, the damned alligator beat my Pokemon to death with water gun. Grr. Je suis angry.

And so, as we close, my game boy nears an open window.

Default 2004-2005 TPM GSC Monotype Challenge

Okay, I like the storytelling way Chris Watarimono recounts his Normal-type Challenge in RBY, so I'll be using that style for this.

    Player: Steve
    Type: Steel

"I need you to run an errand for me," Prof. Elm said. "I'll give you a pokémon for a partner. They're all rare pokémon that we just found."
"Ooh, are any of'em those new Steel-types you told me about?" As soon as young Steve had heard about this new type, he knew he wanted to experience it.
"Erm, no, sorry. They're the Grass-type Chikorita, the Fire-type Cyndaquil, and the Water-type Totodile."
    "Eeh..."
"...tell you what. If you want to catch and raise Steel-types, I'd suggest you take Cyndaquil. We've learned that Steel-types are weak against Fire, so with Cyndaquil at your side you shouldn't have a problem capturing them."
    "...okay!"
    Steve got Cyndaquil!
On his way to Mr. Pokémon's house, Steve remembered that Skarmory roosted in the mountains just north of here, but when he went from Route 29 to Route 46, he came up against cliffs that he couldn't climb. If he wanted a Skarmory, he'd have to go the long way around. As he passed through Cherrygrove, he asked the people he met...he got a Map Card, but no info on where he might get Steel-types. As he worked his way up Route 30, he reflected on his position...training Cyndaquil was fun, but it just wasn't what he truly wanted to do...
    "Cynda."
    "Huh?"
    "Cyn, cyndaaquill."
"What!? I don't hate you, I...I, uh...yeah, sorry, I'm not really being fair to you, am I? You are doing well. I'll try to work with you a little better."
    "Quil!"
When Steve arrived at Mr. Pokémon's house, he was swept up in one excitement after another...Mr. Pokémon giving him the egg...Prof. Oak pronouncing him 'fit' and giving him a Pokédex to fill...and then Prof. Elm calling and gibbering about something that had gone horribly wrong back in New Bark.
Steve and Cyndaquil headed back to New Bark, but on the way they ran into a mysterious, bratty red-haired kid with a familiar-looing Totodile...Cyndaquil beat it easily thanks to Cyndaquil's Smokescreen ability, but Steve was left wondering...and when he reached New Bark, his suspicion was confirmed. Prof. Elm's Totodile had been stolen, by the boy named Kyle...

    Current team:
    L8 Cyndaquil

Tune in next time, when Steve actually gets a Steel-type!

P.S. I pretty much always name the GSC Rival Kyle, because I had a theory that he was related to Claire. Think about it: they both have that stuck-up I'm-the-greatest attitude, and the Rival can be seen in the Dragon's Den every Tuesday and Thursday after you pass I-forget-which-milestone...even after the revelation about the GSC Rival's true origin that was revealed in FR/LG, I still think Kyle suits him.

I went to the Pokemon Center after receiving a phone call from Prof. Elm and got the Togepi Egg. I decided to wait until it hatches so I could use it as an HM slave for Flash^.^
Then, I reached Azalea and my pokemon grew to level 15. I saved these stupid Slowpokes, got the ball from that old man, and defeated Bugsy and all his trainers(thanks to Insomnia and her Peck ^.~). Insomnia&Betrayer grew to level 17 and we went to the Ilex Forest.
The battle with Tom was short - Insomnia's Hypnosis and Foresight helped her defeating both Gastly and Zubat, and finally Betrayer's jaws were stronger than Croconaw's.

Default 2004-2005 TPM GSC Monotype Challenge

    Progress:

As I was traing Tantalos in the Growlithe Patch on route 34 it reached l.10. I was tired of the slow progress I was making and said I would try my luck at the Violet City Gym Again, I tried to defeat the Pidgey with my trusty Zubat but Leech Life just couldn't do the job. Ariathne quickly disposed of the flying foe, but was no match to the strong gust of Pidgeotto.

As we woke up before the pokemon center, we would try again since it gave us exp.points of defeating the darn Pidgey over and over again. Zubat tried to defeat the Pidgey yet again, but failed. I had to recall him because he had 1 hp remaining. Ariathne disposed of the Pidgey AGAIN and faced the strong Pidgeotto. He managed to cut through 3/4 of the Pidgeotto's HP and Poisoning him before he went to sleep. I called my 1HP remaining Zubat to face the awfull bird creature. I used Supersonic. Finally the slap back from confusion and Poison killed the mighty Bird pokemon. My 1HP Zubat had won the badge! He grew to l.11

I recieved the Bagde and made my way up to route 32 witch was my destination ever since I came to Violet. Because that is the route were I can catch my beloved Ekans. My all time favorite of the Poison type. I fixed the puzzel in the Ruins of Alph and started Leech life'ing the Unown until Tantalos reached l.12 and finally learned a decent attack: Bite!

I caught a male Ekans on route 32 and I'm now training it the piddybacking way or against Hoppip.

    Current status:

    Ariathne/Spinarak [F]: l.16 - Poison sting_Stringshot_Scary Face_Constrict
    Tantalos/Zubat [M]: l.12 - Leech Life_Supersonic_Bite_-----
    Fang/Ekans [M]: l.7 - Wrap_Leer_-----_-----

I chased the Farfetch'd and got HM 01 Cut for making it come back to its trainer. We fought some Caterpie and managed to go out of the Ilex Forest.
Then, I caught a male Lv 12 Jigglypuff, Paranoid, and a Lv 10 Ditto(Shapeshift), who was very hard to catch x_X(and put the Togepi Egg in the PC)
I must have used something like 2 Great Balls and 6 Pokeballs on her.
I trained them on Route 34, and I'm currently trying to make them all reach Lv 18.
Oh, and I got that "odd egg" from the old man who make your pokemon breed together...I also got the bike.

The rules are updated: You now have the ability to use 1 set of TM's in a RBY catridge aswell. Bodyslam, Double-edge, Rockslide, Swordsdance, etc. are now available.

It's a rather quick update since I only posted this morning, but I had to study today from my mom. I didn't feel like studying today and grabbed my GB...

    Progress:

I have trained my Ekans to l.11 using the trainers on Route 32 and allot of wild pokemon. It was hard, since Wrap was his only attack with damage. Therefore it was allot of Piddybacking.

I started realising that the Union Cave(that is its name =p) would form a problem since Poison doesn't effect against Rock. I trained my l.16 Spinerak one level so that it would learn Night shade. Night shade sweeped off the Hikers, Tantalos' Bite got rid of the slowpoke and Fang defeated the Vulpix at the end. They grew quit a bit as we were out of the tunnel.

I healed my pokemon and defeated the slowpoke mission. Got some trouble with them zubat, they are reisstant to my poison stings...

I went towards Ilex Forest and engaged a battle with my rival. Tantalos' Bite got rid of Gastly. He defeated TPM's(that is how I my rival =p) Zubat, but with only a few Hitpoints to spare. Bayleef slauthered my Zubat, but I had Fang come to the rescue. He Poison sting'ed Bayleef to death, but had to have some help of my potion. TPM was defeated.

I went up to the gym after I healed my squad and defeated teh gymtrainers with ease. My l.14 Ekans at that time had learned bite when he reached the next level. Bite had many options. He could now take on poison pokemon, that meant the Weedle family trainer north of Bugsy. They all grew quit a bit again.

I challenged Bugsy for the Hive Badge and the battle begun. Fang almost made the 2 cocoons break with his mighty Bite attack, but Scyther slayed him. I made Ariathne scary face the Scyther twice, to limit his speed abilities. Then he Night shaded him until he dropped. Tantalos finished the Scyther of with a couple of bites, but with only some Hitpoints to spare. The hivebadge was mine.

I got through Ilex forest, gave the farfetch'ed back, got the headbutt TM and managed to get out of there.

I learned Fang my brandnew Headbutt move and trained my pokemon on the Trainers south of Goldenrod.

I booted out the Underground Path(or what ever it's called) with Tantalos. And Ariathne's Night shade took care of them darn Magnemite.

We are on our way to the route north of Goldenrod and the bug catching contest were I'll be catching my new squad member: Venonath.

    Current status:

    Ariathne/Spinarak [F]: l.19 - Poison sting_Night shade_Scary Face_Constrict
    Tantalos/Zubat [M]: l.18 - Leech Life_Supersonic_Bite_-----
    Fang/Ekans [M]: l.18 - Headbutt_Leer_Poison Sting_Bite

Pkmn in box and are probably going to be trained later:

    Toxicwave/Tentacool[F]: l.10 - Poison Sting_Supersonic_-----_-----

    Location: Goldenrod city
    Gym badges: 2

I trained Shapeshift a bit, and put her on my PC. She fainted most of the time, so...
Paranoid grew to level 18; and I went at the Goldenrod City Gym to get my third badge(yay!). After four tough battles against the cute girls Whitney hired as her Junior Trainer, I finally faced Whitney herself.
Defeating her was quite easy. I still remember I had to train my Machop a lot in my Silver version;and I was defeated once; but in this Monotype version, I didn't have any problems. Insomnia could handle Clefairy; she put her to sleep and then attacked her with Peck. I watched her remaining HP slowly decreasing. Then, THE pokemon[who would be the only challenge in that gym] came out. Miltank. Insomnia used Hypnosis, and while the cow was asleep I sent out Betrayer. She woke up after only one Hyper Fang and used Attract, making my Rattata fell in love with her. But Betrayer must not have loved her that much, since he attacked her three times before being KO'ed by Miltank's Rollout. I sent out Paranoid. He put her to sleep with Sing, and then used Defense Curl and Rollout; and we won the battle.
I got my badge, and while I was on my way to Ecruteak, a trainer challenged me in that park(you-know-the-one-in-which-you-can-capture-all-these-bugs ). After the battle, I got a big surprise.... INSOMNIA EVOLVED!
Yay, the first normal pokemon I got in that game became a Noctowl !
I fought another trainer on Route 136... another not-so-tough battle(=OHKO x3)... another evolution! Betrayer became a Raticate.
I have now a new team, with two new and powerful pokemon ^.^

    Status:

    Progress:

I went up on route 35 and defeated the trainers there with Fang. He discarded all of them with his Headbutt. I trained him until l.22, then he finally evolved into my favorite Poison pokemon: Arbok!

I then trained Tantalos until he reached l.20, booting out the Park and route 36. I picked up the Dig TM in the park and made my way back to the center.

On my way back I thought it would be wise to defeat the gym junior trainers, so I did. It took the last junior trainer in the gym to finally evolve Tantalos, like Arbok at l.22.

I then challenged the Normal girl nr.1. Piece of cake: I swept Clefairy with my l.19 Spinarak witch I learned Dig on my way here. Miltank was a diffrent case...It stomped my Spinarak flat with just 1 Stomp. But trusty Tantalos C-Ray'ed her. She was hit every time by the confusion and with Bite on her tail, she was no match for my new Golbat.

I then got rid of Suduwoodo, captering him. Cleared Route 37 and made it to Ecruteak.

I went to the burned tower and defeated my rival, with Spinarak. The dogs were released and Eusine came chatting a bit. Not even the beautiful Kimono girls were a match against my Spinarak. Although it had a hard time, he managed to get rid of them all, raising him to l.22. As you might guess Spinarak evolved at the same level as my other team members. I guess l.22 is my lucky level.

I then entered the gym with Fang on my side. He killed every Junior(if I can call those old people this) in the gym and grew to l.26.

I'm now ready to defeat Morty, but I might consider training Venonat first...

    Current status:

    Ariathne/Ariados [F]: l.23 - Poison sting_Night shade_Scary Face_Dig
    Tantalos/Golbat [M]: l.23 - Leech Life_Supersonic_Bite_Confuse ray
    Fang/Arbok [M]: l.26 - Headbutt_Glare_Poison Sting_Bite

Pkmn in box and are probably going to be trained later:

    Toxicwave/Tentacool[F]: l.10 - Poison Sting_Supersonic_-----_-----

    Location: Ecruteak city
    Gym badges: 3
    Playing time: 7.32

    Player: Steve
    Type: Steel

"Violet City...that place is bigger than Cherrygrove," Steve thought. "Maybe there I can find out how to get a Steel-type."
There were several trainers and wild pokémon on the trek through Routes 30 and 31, and Cyndaquil was level 12 by the time Steve reached Violet City. On his right, he saw an inviting Pokémon Center...and ahead, he saw a house with a sign near it. "Looking to trade pokémon!" "Hm...well, it's worth checking out!"
    ...
"So what kind of pokémon are you offering for trade?"
"This Onix I caught in Union Cave."
    "Onix...don't they evolve into Steel-types?"
"Hm? Oh, yeah, I heard about that. They can evolve into Steelix if you trade them while they hold a Metal Coat."
"Metal Coat, huh? Any idea where I could get one?"
"Sorry, no. I hear they're kinda rare."
"Oh well, getting an Onix is a start. What are you looking for in trade?"
    "Bellsprout."
"Bellsprout? There are some right out there," Steve said, gesturing toward Route 31. "I saw a few of them on my way in. You can't just get one of those?"
"Well...aside from this Onix, the only other pokémon I have is a Poliwag. They can't handle Grass-types."
"Huh. They're no problem for my Fire-type Cyndaquil. All right then, it's settled! I'll catch you a Bellsprout in exchange for that Onix!"
Unfortunately, Murphy's Law is alive and well in Johto. Now that Steve wanted a Bellsprout, he couldn't seem to find one. Cyndaquil reached level 13 and was pretty close to level 14 before Steve found, and caught, a Bellsprout. Then, on his way back to Violet, one more Kakuna showed up to bar his way, and when Cyndaquil roasted it, Cyndaquil grew to level 14...and evolved into Quilava!
Steve traded the Bellsprout for Onix, and then headed to the Pokémon Center. "Now, I'm going to have to trade this thing again to make it evolve...but who am I going to find who'll want to trade pokémon without keeping it?"
Another boy heard him and stepped over. "I would."
"Huh?" Steve looked at the boy, and realized he was wearing almost the same jacket Steve was! The only difference was that this other boy's jacket had gold trim, while Steve's jacket had silver trim.
"You want to evolve a pokémon that evolves by trading, right?" the boy said. "Well, there's several of those. Graveler, Machoke, Kadabra, and so on...it's actually kinda common for trainers with those pokémon to trade them and then trade back. I myself just got an Upgrade that evolves Porygon when you trade them, so I need to find an evolution trade."
"Erm...I don't suppose you have a spare Metal Coat, too? I hear I need one to evolve this Onix."
"As a matter of fact, I do. After all, they're not just for evolving...they power up Steel-type attacks for pokémon who hold them."
    "Sweet! Let's do this!"
A few minutes later, Steve had his very own Steelix! His first Steel-type pokémon...now he just had to raise it.

    Current Team:
    L3 Steelix "Rocky"
    L14 Quilava

P.S. In case you're curious, I evolved Cyndaquil because it's going to be using Strength as an HMer. The basic form can't learn it, but Quilava can. I won't need to evolve my other planned HMer at all, so no training for it.
P.P.S. Yeah, I'm kinda slow...but I don't have a whole ton of free time like I used to.

I got the Dig TM and my Odd Egg hatched... an Elekid. Too bad, I wanted a Cleffa
I defeated the annoying Sudowoodo, and I caught a Meowth on Route 38: Tricky. I trained Tricky, defeated the Kimono Girls and their Eeveelutions, got the HM Surf.
Then, I went to the Tower in which you find the legendaries(meh, forgot the English name), defeated Tom(Tricky took care of Gastly, Betrayer and his Dig could handle Magnemite, Zubat was defeated by Paranoid's Rollout, and Insomnia won her battle against Croconaw), did that thing with Eusine and the legendary cats, went out of the tower, defeated the Juniors(ahem, Seniors) in Morty's arena and lost two times against Morty's annoying Gengar with Hypnosis. I'll try to beat it... ahem.... next week. When I'll have enough time.

    Player: Steve
    Type: Steel

Rocky the Steelix...Steve's first Steel-type. It was pretty low-level, though. Steve headed out to Route 31 to train it, where it did excellently against the Weedle and Hoothoot. When Steve encountered a Bellsprout, he stopped and thought. "Onix can't handle Bellsprout...but Onix isn't Steel-type. Let's see how Rocky fares!" Sure enough, Bellsprout's Vine Whip proved less than impressive, even though Steelix was partly Ground-type. With this satisfying result, Steve decided to train Rocky by taking it to Violet City's Sprout Tower.
Rocky did well against the Tower's opponents, and he grew surprisingly quickly. Toward the top, however, something started happening...Rocky passed level 10, and apparently decided Steve was no longer worth listening to.
    ROCKY is
    loafing around.

    ROCKY used
    instead,
    BIND!

    ROCKY
    turned away!

    ROCKY won't
    obey!

Steve was horror-struck. Rocky was a powerful pokémon, so it could win battles even when it was disobedient, but it was crushing for Steve's first Steel-type to snub him like this.
"Does this mean I don't have what it takes to be a great Steel-type trainer? No, I won't give up. I'll make Rocky believe in me!"
After defeating Sage Li at the top of the Tower and earning a neat shiny HM which neither Rocky nor Quilava could use, Steve headed to Violet City Gym. Surely Rocky was strong enough now to overcome the Flying-types here. In fact, Rocky ended up learning Rock Throw there in that Gym, and defeated Falkner's Pidgey with ease using that move.
Pidgeotto proved more troublesome, however, when it started using Mud-Slap...and scoring super-effective hits. "Steel-types are weak against Ground? Uh-oh!" Steve was about to switch pokémon, but..."wait a minute, Fire-types are weak against Ground, too! And Rocky's Defense is better than Quilava's...Rocky, you're just going to have to hang in there!"
The battle against Pidgeotto was frustrating. Rocky didn't feel like attacking very often, and when it did try using a move, Pidgeotto's repeated Mud-Slaps made it miss. It finally got in a lucky shot with Rock Throw, though, and the battle was over.
"Whew...it's tough battling with a pokémon who won't listen..."
"I hear you," Falkner commented. "Why do you think my strongest pokémon is only level 9? These were my father's Flying-types...the higher-level ones won't listen to me, either. Outsiders, traded pokémon, are like that."
    "What can I do?"
"Actually, you hold the answer in your hand," Falkner said, indicating the Zephyr Badge he had just given Rocky a minute ago. "Earn enough Badges and even outsiders will obey you. Two ought to do it for your Steelix, so I'd recommend you head south to Azalea Town."
    "Thanks!"
After picking up the mysterious Pokémon Egg at the Violet Pokémon Center, Steve traveled down Route 32, trying to avoid trainers and wild pokémon. The sooner he earned that Badge, the better...Azalea's Badge wouldn't do him much good if Rocky, who grew quickly, became too strong for two Badges to control before Steve even reached Azalea Gym. Despite Steve's carefulness, Rocky was level 16 by the time Steve entered Union Cave.
The Hikers posed a problem for Rocky, who knew Tackle, Rock Throw, Screech and Bind. All three of his attacks were weak against Geodude. Quilava, of course, had nothing better. Steve decided to use the Mud-Slap TM Falkner had given him, and the rest of the way was a bit easier (it would have been easier still if the willful Rocky felt like using Mud-Slap when Steve told him to, rather than while they were facing Zubat.)
Azalea Town itself presented more trouble. Apparently an old criminal gang that was supposed to have been disbanded was making a comeback, and they had chosen Azalea as a base to fund their new operations. Steve had heard about the enticingly sweet sap in a Slowpoke's tail, but it didn't make the idea of chewing on tail any less disgusting. Besides, Team Rocket's goons were blocking the way to the Gym. Steve quickly (well, as quickly as Rocky was in the mood for) disposed of Team Rocket at Slowpoke Well, earning Kurt's respect. Now if he could only win Rocky's...
Steve entered Azalea Gym and pretty well stormed the place, thanks again to Rock Throw. Then he went up against Bugsy himself, and the battle with Falkner almost repeated itself...Rocky took out metapod and Kakuna, but when Scyther came out, Rocky decided this was an excellent time to sunbathe...or something. It sat there, loafing around, for several turns in a row...turns that Bugsy's Scyther spent attacking with Fury Cutter. Finally, when Scyther was one Fury Cutter away from making Julienne Steelix, Rocky consented to use Rock Throw and crushed Scyther with a single hit. The Hive Badge was Steve's.
"Now, this'll make Rocky obey me, right?"
"It should," Bugsy nodded. "It'ws only good on pokémon at or below level 30, though."
Steve checked Rocky's data on his Pokédex..."Yipe! He's level 21! I'm going to need more Badges soon...I wish I had a Steel-type that wasn't an outsider..."
"Hm." Bugsy nodded. "I'll give you a tip. There are, not one, but two Bugs that can evolve into Bug/Steel-types. I know all about those, since I study Bug-types a lot. if you look in nearby Ilex Forest, you'll find Pineco, the bagworm pokémon, which evolves at level 31 into Forretress, the Fortress of the Forest. The other one is Scyther, who you saw the power of just now. Trade it with a metal Coat and it'll become Scizor, whose steel pincers have amazing crushing power."
"But if I have to trade it to evolve it, won't it be another outsider?"
"Not if you catch it. Outsider status is determined by a pokémon's Original Trainer, often abbreviated "OT" in references. Your Steelix is giving you grief, not just because it was traded, but because you aren't the trainer who first caught it."
"Ah. Thanks! Pineco and Scyther...I'll watch out for them!"

    Current team:
    L21 Steelix "Rocky"
    L14 Quilava
    (Egg)

Wow, that was a lot of fun...I'm never training an outsider in the early game again...

    Player: Steve
    Type: Steel

On his way to Ilex Forest, Steve was stopped by Kyle, the long red-haired guy who had stolen Prof. Elm's Totodile. He was decently strong now, but with Rocky obeying Steve's commands, Steve pulled off a win anyway. Even when the evolved Croconaw showed up and started using super-effective Water Guns ("Uh oh, better to switch to Qui-wait a minute! Oh, not again!") Steve and Rocky were able to defeat it using careful strategy. Then, it was time to explore Ilex...
Not too far into the forest, Steve encountered the Charcoal Man's apprentice, who had lost their Farfetch'd because it wouldn't obey him. Steve knew how that felt, so he helped bring Farfetch'd back. The Charcoal Man thanked him with an HM containing Cut. "It's not the strongest attack out there, but it certainly helps to clear your way through brush! You'll find it useful if you want to get through this dense forest."
Steve thought. Rocky could learn the move, but did he want to give Rocky a move that was "not the strongest attack out there"? He remembered hearing that HM moves were very difficult to forget once they were learned...
Then he noticed something else. His old Quilava, whom he never quite got around to using any more, could learn the move too! And even though Quilava couldn't use that other HM, Flash, that Steve had, there were probably other moves that were useful in the field, that Quilava could learn..."Hey, Quilava! Here's something you can do!"
    ____________________________________________

Several Weedle, Oddish and Paras later, Steve spotted another kid standing by one of the small conifers that lined the path. "Hey, have you seen any Pineco around here?"
    "Yeah, I've seen a few."
"Where? I haven't seen any yet."
"Oh, well, you're probably not headbutting trees."
    "I'm not what!?"
"You're not using this," the kid said, producing a TM marked 02. "This is the Normal-type attack, Headbutt. Not only is it fairly strong with a chance of causing flinching, you can also find wild pokémon by using it on these small trees. The move shakes the whole tree and the pokémon just fall out of the branches. It's fun! Here, you try it. I've got a bundle of these anyway; Goldenrod's Department Store sells them."
"Thanks!" This was a stronger move than Cut...Steve decided to go ahead and teach this move to Rocky. Besides, if he needed to replace this move later on, he could; he could even buy another TM 02 to use on Quilava.
"All right, Rocky, try out Headbutt now!" Rocky dove at a tree nearby--and snapped it in half with his sheer mass. Four Weedle and a set of Exeggcute bounced off his head and then fled in terror.
"Erm...all right, that's good for battles, but you'd better take it a bit easier against trees."
The next small conifer Steve came across had a Pineco in it. Rocky lightly nudged the tree, and the Pineco dropped out, struck Rocky's steel cranium--and detonated. Rocky wasn't hurt too badly, but he wasn't exactly pleased. "Yipe! I'm supposed to capture one of those? Hmm...I'll need a way to stop it from landing so hard...I know!"
Moments later, Steve stood in front of another small tree...with the first, broken, tree lying at its base. "Okay, quick hit now!" Rocky Headbutted the tee and then immediately drew back. A Pineco fell out, landed in the soft needles of the broken tree, and didn't explode. "Great! Now to catch it! Better use a weak move so I don't faint it or make it blow up...Mud-Slap, then!"
Pineco used Protect to ignore the first attack completely. It tried the same thing against the second attack, but Rocky was a fair learner and managed to deal damage. Then Pineco Tackled Rocky, and Rocky shrugged it off as nothing and hit it with another Mud-Slap. Steve tossed a Great Ball, and Pineco was his. Now to train it...

    Current team:
    L10 Pineco
    L23 Steelix "Rocky"
    L14 Quilava (HMer)
    (Egg)

Default 2004-2005 TPM GSC Monotype Challenge

    Progress:

I challenged Morty for a 4 on 3 duel. It was easy. Ariathne took care of Gastly and Haunter with his Dig + Nightshade combination. After that Morty's Gengar appeared before my eyes. I lowered the fast gengar's speed until was a slow as a caterpie.(quit embarrasing actually) He took Ariathne out of play after that. Golbat appeared and C-Ray'ed Gengy. He bit the ghost pokemon a couple of times. The SE bites were to much for Gengar and he fainted. His mimicing Haunter quickly fell under Golbat's mighty fangs.

Later I went on to the bug catching contest to FINALLY get myself a venonat. I quickly encountered a l.15 venonat and caught it. ATTENTION: I had caught the venonat not for winning any prizes but just to train and finally after all those years of GSC, I won the bug catching contest!(Yes, I have never won it before, NEVER!) Not with a Pinser, Butterfree or Scyther but with a mere venonat! My greatest achievement in this game.

I left National Park and trained Spore against them Stantlers. It was hard but he finally made it to l.18. Then I started going towards Olivine. I defeated most of the trainers with Venonat, having to restore Venonat after every battle took its time, but it paid off. He reached l.21. Good enough to boot out the lighthouse.

As staded before I quickly got rid of the trainers in the lighthouse by using Spore, Fang and Ariathne. I knew my next stop would be Cainwood.

I bought a couple of Superpotions and Super Repels. I picked up Strenght in the local cafe and made my way to Cainwood surfing. I used my 21 Superrepels to defeat every trainer in and out of the whirl islands. This was some good expierence for venonat who reached l.30 by that time.

Golbat and his Bite attack were to weak for Chuck so I trained him a bit around Mt.Mortar and Lake of Rage. So he finaly reached l.30 and learned his signature move: Wing attack.

After this I caught a Pidgey HM slave, learned Arbok Strenght>Headbutt since I didn't have a suitable HM slave and made my way back to Cainwood, surfing.

At Cainwood Gym I took out the 2 trainers with Ariados who grew to l.27. The 3th trainer was for Arbok, who had a hard time, but managed to defeat the Rock sliding Machoke.

After that I healed my pokemon and saved the game.

    Current status:

I defeated Morty - using a Mint Berry, Betrayer's Dig, Tricky's Bite, Insomnia's Hypnosis and Foresight, and Paranoid's Rollout.
I got a Lv4 Poliwag Surfing HM slave(and already had a Lv6 Paras HM slave for Cut and Flash), trained my pokemon until they reached Lv 23.
When I finally reached Olivine City - is that the right English name? - , I defeated the trainers in the lighthouse using Tricky's Pay Day to get enough money - I knew I'll need it.
I also made a important choice: I don't wont to train more pokemon. I already have 4. That's enough. And if they reach level 100, I could defeat Red with only four quite-underused Pokemon (Raticate, Noctowl, Persian, Wiggly)...

    My Progress:

    It's a rather quick update this time;

I finished the Primeape family trainer in no time using Fang's strenght.

Then I came to face Macho boy himself. His primeape was quickly slowed down by the amazing glare of my Arbok. I quickly disposed of the overgrown monkey by using 2 Strenght attacks.

Then his final pokemon appeared. He was again no match for Fang. Glared him, received a surf, major damage because of Arbok's sucky SDef, strenght, received mind reader, strenght, succes hypnosis, awakening, strenght, Poliwrath fainted, got badge and TM01.

(Didn't even have to use Golbat's wing attack)

Went to Chucks wife, she started complaining Chuck was getting chubby, received HM02, thought Pidgey to fly and flew back to Olivine.

I handed over the Secretpotion and made my way up to Maghony town.

Trained my pokemon while defeating the trainers at lake of rage. Caught red gyrados, decided to help Lance and booted out the Underground base. ATTENTION: Venonat evolved! It learned gust! After booting out the base, the two excutives wanted revenge. They failed and helped my pokemon reach new levels.

After defeating Team Rocket I went back to pick up TM36: Sludgebomb. Taught Fang how to use Sludgebomb. It owned!

I got back to maghony town and decided to defeat the Gymtrainers. My pokemon grew quit a bit. I am now ready to defeat Pryce...

But I got a problem, since my movset for Ariathne would be: Curse_Sludgebomb_Return/Dig_Doubleteam/Something

Now that Sludgebomb is gone and I'm only allowed to one set of TMs, I'm f*cked. Muk learns it by level, so he is covered...Crap

    Current status:

    Ariathne/Ariados [F]: l.32 - Poison sting_Night shade_Scary Face_Dig
    Tantalos/Golbat [M]: l.31 - Wing attack_Supersonic_Bite_Confuse ray
    Fang/Arbok [M]: l.33 - Strenght_Glare_Sludgebomb_Screech
    Spore/Venonat[M]: l.31 - Swift_Confusion_StunSpore_Gust

    I guess I'll start a Crystal Normal(Tauros!) game.

Woke up at around 8 in the morning. Too early to catch a Hoothoot, but I don't mind. Find them pointless anyway...First thing to do(After picking Cyndaquil, of course!) was grab a Pidgey!
Well, ok the first order of business was to run an error for Prof.Elm...

After visiting Prof.Oak and getting a Pokedex, some kid with red hair, saying his name was 'Roy' shoved me aside rudely, taking out Cyndaquil. No biggy. I felt bad for Cynda, but my passion was for the spectacular Normal-types. Despite our "Leer and Smokescreen" combo, he softened Cyndaquil up too much to take more than a few blows and was defeated...

After doing all THAT priority one became catching Pidgey. And since it was there, Rattata for now, too.

After catching a female Pidgey, I quickly named her Quicksilver, and learned that this wasn't going to be easy, as she was defeated on 2 seperate, almost simultaneous occasions...
I sighed, gritted my teeth, and headed north. After a few wins, I noticed Silvers body becoming less that of a pudgey budgey and more firm and tough like a hawks. Her wings, once only useful for short flight into limbs, were now strong enough to hurl sand into the opponents face! I was overjoyed, but didn't see how this would hurt the countless bugs much. After a few more battles, her wings seemed to twitch, seeming stronger than before. I was as shocked as the bugs I was facing when she flapped hard, and instead of throwing herself forward, or kicking up sand, a tornado brewed! Silver learned Gust! Overjoyed, I continued to hunt a Rattata, Silvers wings being my only protection for the time being.

Two trainers decided to step up to me, both being knocked down quickly. The first sent out his Rattata. I wanted one, and he had one, so they had to be around here, I guessed! The second trainer had a much weaker Pidgey than my own. Needless to say, this was only helping Silver become stronger.
Finally capture Rattata, and named her(yes, another) Bucktooth. Not exactly the toughest cookie, but she's pulling along nicely.

    Pidgey(f), lvl 11, Quicksilver
    Rattata(f), lvl 4, Bucktooth
    Cyndaquil(m), lvl 7 (HMslave, unnamed)
EDIT - Will finish this up later XD

Rather than playing through the whole game again (I don't have a copy of it here in Japan with me at the moment anyway), would you people mind if I perhaps instead just posted up a summary from memory of how I played through the game with a Monotype Bug team? (I wonder if I could be the only person who's cleared every Pokémon game with Monotype Bug. Scary thought.)

Well you could use a *cough*legally obtained version*winkwink* and tell us about that, and leave out what exactly you're playing it on.

Nah, even though G/S/C were the easiest games out of the lot for Mono-Bug (IIRC, I defeated Red in a little over 60 hours....or was it 80 hours? One or the other.), I'm in the middle of packing and preparing to move back home in 2 weeks, I don't have that much free time to spare.

Default 2004-2005 TPM GSC Monotype Challenge

Well, I read this and it sounded interesting so I'll raise this thread from the grave

    Type: Ground
    Cartridge Version: Silver

    Progress:

Checking the guide, I noticed that the earliest ground is the dual type Geodude. So I started with Cyndaquil and rushed through the game to get a Geodude so I can stick to the "monotype" format of the game. From the rival battle (named Gary, I always name my rivals Gary. Force of habit) and a forced trainer battle (I avoided all trainers because I can't use Cynda. Better left for Geodude to get that xp from those battles), Cyndaquil was level 7 when I captured a level 3 male Geodude. I ran to Violet City pokecenter and healed the team.

    Goals:

    - Store Cyndaquil (I actually forgot to do that before I saved :/)
    - Clear all trainers that I skipped from New Bark to Violet City
    - Clear Bellsprout Tower
    - Victimize (!) Falkner's puny little birds

    Status:

Cyndaquil (Level 7, Male) -- Retired because it's not ground
Geodude (Level 3, Male) -- My sole poké until I get a Wooper

    Location: Violet City
    Badges: None
    Time: 0:43
    Money: 1548 Poké-money-unit

    Progress:

After stuffing Cyndaquil into Bill's PC, I cleared all those trainers. Geodude became level 7. It went real smooth up until Bug Trainer Wade, whose level 3 Weedle seemed to get a kick out of poisoning Geodude. After using an antidote and a PSNCure Berry and getting poisoned again, I kind of got scared, but Geodude won and we made it to the center just in time (Geodude had 2 HP left). I had a talk with Earl the crazy frenchman Academy Teacher guy. After wasting time and noticing that Earl did not in fact give any items (d'oh), I went up to the Bellsprout Tower, thinking my level 7 Geodude would floor the level 3 Bellsprouts.

So I got into a battle with Sage Nico, and he brings up his level 3 Bellsprout. I go "Haha, come on tackle me!".

    Instead I get vine whipped.

    Ouch.

Geodude instantly went down to 5 hp. I had a critical tackle for the ko, but the second Bellsprout (he has 3) vine whipped Geodude all the way back to Violet City pokémon center.

But at least Geodude got to level 8.

I decided that Geodude needs to level up a bit, so I went down and solved the Kabuto puzzle, and dropped into the Unown museum thing. Level 5 Unown I pops up. Once again, I presume that I'll have an easy time. Once again, Geodude almost dies. I decide that leveling here isn't exactly the brightest idea and leave.

I go northwest, pass a border, and talk to some people. I end up talking to Arthur of Thursday! He gives me a Hard Stone, which I promptly give Geodude to hold.

I decide to hit the gym, assuming the Flying pokes shouldn't be that hard. Finally one of my assumptions pay off and I easily pummel the Trainers in there. Geodude gets to level 10.

I decide to level up Geodude so he can learn Rock Throw. I go east and have 3 wild battles in the grass. A level 4 female Rattata does the trick and Geodude is level 11.

I heal, buy a potion, and go to the gym. 3 Rock throws easily defeats Falkner's Pidgey and (Gamesharked) Pidgeotto (Come on now, there's no way it can evolve at that level). I get the Zephyrbadge and the TM Mud Slap.

I get out of gym, go to the pokécenter to get the Egg from Elm's Aide and heal, and save at 1:27.

    Goals:

    - Clear Bellsprout Tower
    - Progress onto second gym

    Status:

Geodude (Level 12, Male) -- Defense Curl; Rock Throw; Tackle -- @Hard Stone
Egg -- It moves around inside sometimes. It must be close to hatching.

    Location: Violet City
    Badges: 1 (Zephyrbadge)
    Time: 1:27
    Money: 691 Poké-money-unit
