Sorry, but I have bad news. You probably haven't heard of this, it was on the news but only in Argentina, I think. A young couple went to the beach on vacation and rented an appartment, but there was a serious problem with the gas installation and the water heater exploded on the first day they were there, making the whole appartment catch on fire. That happened at the beginning of this month. The firemen never came. They were found by a neighbour and taken to a nearby hospital with poor resources, until their families managed to bring them back to Buenos Aires and put them in a good hospital.

Now here's the most personal part of the news: the girl - whose name is Sabina Gómez - is one of my cousins' best friends. I talked to her at many parties and social gatherings, cooked a few things with her, and even had a study meeting with her and my cousin Helena even though we were all studying completely different things. As for her boyfriend... he died yesterday when his body went in shock and his heart and lungs stopped working. Sabina doesn't know yet; the doctors are doing their best to keep her stable and as far as I know she's making great progress, but I don't want to think of how she's going to feel when she finds out.

In the meantime, the building by the beach is still offering appartments for rent and the local newspapers have published a bunch of lies (for instance, that the firemen put out the fire and that a policeman saved the couple). There's a judicial cause in progress, I don't know how it will end.

I just... felt I had to say this, because I'm quite shaken and I can't just pretend everything's fine. We hear awful news everyday and it's so frequent it's become routine (although it still hurts me when I hear things like what happened in Tartagal, or that our president has vetoed the glacier protection law), but it hurts even more when it hits close to home.

That's really awful, Gabi. You're right, it's easy to become desensitised to a lot of the things that happen in the news - most of us tend to, I think. It's when it affects you personally that you wonder why everyone else isn't equally enraged, or affected.

I know it's too late for the man involved, but I really hope things turn out okay for Sabina. (And for you, too.)

I hope so too. She's been moved to a specialized hospital now. As for why the firemen never came, I don't know. It was around 7 PM on a summer afternoon in Pinamar... maybe they were at the beach? It's clear that many people didn't do their jobs.

On other news, I'm participating on a peers program to hang out with students from the USA who came to do community work and give them a hand. This morning we've been painting walls at a synagogue and tomorrow we're going to start painting a mural. The guys (and girls) seem nice, even if one of them was dumb enough to paint stripes all over his own face despite all the warnings. The first meeting with them on Sunday went rather well in spite of my initial worries. I still find it hard to engage in any conversations, but I've managed to get some smiles out of most of them.

I feel a bit ill. Not great posting more sad news after Gabi's bad news but a friend was hospitalised after being glassed in the face. He was in what I would call one of the most upscale clubs in town, and this guy, glass in hand, just swung it into my friend's face.

His nose actually split down the middle and you could see the bone, it was horrible. His nose has swollen to four times its size, I can't believe it, and he's suffered permenant nerve damage in his forehead and parts of his face. What was also slightly harrowing was that he had a heart attack on the operating table and almost died.

He's a big, gentle giant but he always attracts trouble. He needs plastic surgery to correct it. He'll be fine, but it was a shock to hear. The nightclub kicked HIM out as soon as he was hit, something about not wanting blood on their hands (literally). Luckily he found a policewoman outside.

I can't believe the level of ignorance employed by the nightclub! He's suing the nose off them (bad taste, I know) and the guy's going to court.

Yea he's going to court. My friend was driving that night so didnt touch alcohol, and picked him out the crowd instantly. A lot of bars have started using plastic cups instead of glass ones, but if someone is that angry, they can turn anything into a weapon.

I just wanna put my hand up and say that I have no particular fondness for Britney Spears, and I'm very positive that I'm male. Baha. But yeah, gay night clubs have a much more relaxed air about them in general: you don't have do worry about being punched by some macho wanker for looking the wrong way at a hot girl.

I used to be quite a drinker/clubber, going out 2-3 times a week; this year, though, I've been feeling so content/lazy to just curl up on the couch and watch Alias or something with my boyfriend.
