    Stymied Sentences

    Version 1

    Admin Approved by Lady Vulpix

This game is all about posting sentences. However, these sentences are referred to as being stymied, as the way this game is played is, you have to challenge the next poster to post a sentence with at least one "obstacle" (which could be a range of things, such as limiting the number of times a vowel or consonant can be present in the sentence, not allowing a certain vowel or consonant (or a mix of both, such as T's, E's, and O's), not allowing consecutive words to share any letters in common, having to use certain words anywhere in the sentence, the possibilities are endless). After the next person posts a stymied sentence with at least one of these "obstacles", they have to challenge the next person to post with a stymied sentence, again with at least one of the "obstacles".

    For example:

Player 1: Who can make a sentence with all 26 letters of the alphabet?

Player 2: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
Who can make a sentence where no word has any letters repeated in it?

Player 3: This game is fun, who came up with this in the first place?
Who can make a sentence containing at least one word containing at least three consecutive letters of the alphabet?

    ..and so on.

This game is exempt from the rule of having to wait for two people to post before you can post again. However, you can still only have up to 5 posts in this game per day.

New rule: Being that I want this game to be fairly fast-paced, if at least a week passes without someone answering the last challenge to be posted, someone else can post a new challenge, just so that the previous one doesn't cause too much frustration if it is deemed to be too hard.

    Anyway, let's begin.

Who can make a sentence whose first and last words rhyme?

Rhyme can be subjective, as there's more than one kind, but I think I'll past the test by playing it safe this time.

Next challenge: write a sentence of at least 6 words where every word begins with the same letter.

This task took terrific time to terminate, though the tribulation tempts trying twice.

Next challenge: Creat a sentence that contains only words of 2 or more syllables.

Someone working without proper guidance forfeits safety; injuries surely happen whenever someone ignores cautiousness.

Next challenge: Make a sentence that uses at least one plural that doesn't use an S in its plural form.

How is an incompetent player of this awesome game supposed to come up with sensible sentences if beautiful English isn't his first beloved language?

Next challenge: Create a sentence where the first letters of the words are M, I, K, A, C, H and U respectively?

Mikael is knowledgable, although 'consecutive' has use.

(The word you wanted was 'consecutive.' That means 'in a sequence that isn't known yet.' 'Respectively' means 'in a sequence that has already been mentioned.' The more useless words you know... )

Next challenge: Create a sentence of at least 7 words, using only half the letters of the English alphabet.

That was an interesting challenge. By the way, Kyle, I think you meant 'guidance'.

Writing a sentence with at least a hundred words isn't much of a challenge, considering sentences can be pretty much stretched about as far as you want if you know how to fill it with conjunctions, adjectives, transitional phrases and other words and phrases intended to fill up space without altering the meaning of the text which, in addition to repetition in its various forms, are powerful stretching tools whose use often results in long and redundant texts with very little content, but still coherent enough to be considered a sentence, much like the sentence you are reading right now (if, indeed, you have the patience to read the whole thing).

^That sentence up there has 111 words. I could have stretched it further, but I don't want to make it so long that no one will attempt to read it. Besides, 111 is a nice number.

Next challenge: write a sentence of at least 7 words, containing only 1 vowel (you may use that vowel as many times as you want, of course, and Y is not a vowel).

Among the challenges that I've completed, this was by far the hardest to write for.

I've always disliked maximum word limits, but this was quite an interesting challenge.

Next: go through the dictionary, find two words that you don't know, learn what they mean and put them together in a sentence that makes sense.

We may all learn something from this.

Challenges here are indeed zestful and really delightful.

OK, I may have exaggerated a bit, but hey! You don't even have to rearrange the letters!

By the way, this isn't really my 20,000th post on TPM (many have been lost), but it's the post that makes the little number under my name become 20,000, and since Louis posted a visitor message on my profile to point it out, I might as well let him know I've noticed.

This is just one of many sentences I hope to come up with in this game of sentence building fun.

Next challenge: Write a sentence of at least 10 words in which each word has one more OR less letters than the last (for example, first word has 3 letters, next word has 4 letters, next word has 5 letters, next word has 6 latters, next word has 5 letters, next word has 4 letters, and final word has 5 letters). This pattern doesn't have to be applied to the first and last words of the sentence.

Transcribed from William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom! - so, yes, technically I wrote it - we have the following sentence of 590 words (assuming, of course, that my word count has not failed me):

They both bore it as though in deliberate flagellant exaltation of physical misery transmogrified into the spirits' travail of the two young men during that time fifty years ago, or forty-eight rather, then forty-seven and then forty-six, since it was '64 and then '65 and the starved and ragged remnant of an army having retreated across Alabama and Georgia and into Carolina, swept onward not by a victorious army behind it but rather by a mounting tide of the names of lost battles from either side Chickamauga and Franklin, Vicksburg and Corinth and Atlanta - battles lost not alone because of superior numbers and failing ammunition and stores, but because of generals who should not have been generals, who were generals not through training in contemporary methods or aptitude for learning them, but by the divine right to say "Go there" conferred upon them by an absolute caste system; or because the generals of it never lived long enough to learn how to fight massed cautious accretionary battles, since they were already as obsolete as Richard or Roland or du Guesclin, who wore plumes and cloaks lined with scarlet at twenty-eight and thirty and thirty-two and captured warships with cavalry charges but not grain nor meat nor bullets, who would whip three separate armies in as many days and then tear down their own fences to cook meat robbed from their own smokehouses, who on one night and with a handful of men would gallantly set fire to and destroy a million dollar garrison of enemy supplies and on the next night be discovered by a neighbor in bed with his wife and be shot to death - two, four, now two again, according to Quentin and Shreve, the two the four the two still talking - the one who did not yet know what he was going to do, the other who knew what he would have to do yet could not reconcile himself-Henry citing himself authority for incest, talking about his Duke John of Lorraine as if he hoped possible to evoke that condemned and excommunicated shade to tell him in person that it was all right, as people both before and since have tried to evoke God or devil to justify them in what their glands insisted upon - the two the four the two facing one another in the tomblike room: Shreve, the Canadian, the child of blizzards and of cold in a bathrobe with an overcoat above it, the collar turned up about his ears; Quentin, the Southerner, the morose and delicate offspring of rain and steamy heat in the thin suitable clothing which he had brought from Mississippi, his overcoat (as thin and vain for what it was as the suit) lying on the floor where he had not even bothered to raise it: (- the winter of '64 now, the army retreated across Alabama, into Georgia; now Carolina was just at their backs and Bon, the officer, thinking 'We will either be caught and annihilated or Old Joe will extricate us and we will make contact with Lee in front of Richmond and then we will at least have the privilege of surrender': and then one day all of a sudden he thought of it, remembered, how that Jefferson regiment of which his father was now colonel was in Longstreet's corps, and maybe from that moment the whole purpose of the retreat seemed to him to be that of bringing him within reach of his father, to give his father one more chance.
    Huff... huff....

Okay... next challenge! Write a sentence of at least five words without using the letters "a," "e," "i," "o," or "u."

Hug a bear if I wave, cool bud.

OK, it doesn't make much sense, but it's still a sentence.

Next challenge: write a sentence in which every odd word begins with one letter, and every even word begins with an other (that is, one letter for even words and one for odd words). The sentence must have at least 6 words.

Allied barriers and barbs always break away before anyone brings a big apple by air.

Next challenge: Write an entire sentence using at least five words that are also names (e.g. "hanging chad," since "Chad" is a common boy's name). Baby name websites may come in handy for this challenge....

I'll do you one better, using only a "u" (arguably the least common vowel) and the same three letters starting each word: Puny punks punch puns.

Next challenge: Write a 26-word sentence, starting the first word with the first letter of the English alphabet, the second word with the second letter of the alphabet, and so forth. (For bonus points, don't use any proper nouns!)

A boisterous clock dangles egregiously from golden hooks in jumpy kids' loving mothers' neatly organized personal, quiet rooms so the uptight vernal won't xenophobize your zenith.

Next challenge: Write a sentence where every word starts and ends with the same letter.

I'm really terrible at this game, I fear. My sentence sounds like some Native American saying it!

I a sees civic deified level stats madam
"Madam, I refer to my earlier point, which apparently no one sees: I did state that characters with high stats or a very high level should not be deified; I prefer sagas in which a deed is more important than power itself, and where characters that are often under the radar have a chance to shine."

12 palindromes, in case you didn't like the use of A and I.

    ----------------

I made this sentence for a previous challenge and then realized there were new posts. I don't want the effort to be wasted, so here it is anyway.

A bit confusing, daunting even, for grace had initially just kept lowering my number of problems; quite refreshing; still things unfolded vexingly, weaving xeromorphically yet zanily.

X and Z were tough, but I think the sentence is still coherent.

    ----------------

Next challenge: write a sentence in which at least 3 different words have 3 consecutive letters that appear consecutively in the alphabet.

Just because you're too incompetent to make good zabaglione doesn't mean the rest of us have to listen to your discouraging complaints about its so-called lack of deliciousness.

Next challenge: Write a sentence composed only of words that, when grouped together, sound like Pokemon names (example: "peek at you" sounds like "Pikachu," "hit my only" sounds like "Hitmonlee," etc.).

When gulls tar me, I nix Paris.
Wingull, Starmie, Onix, and Paras... as long as you use the proper thick Australian accent.

(By the way, Gabi, your second sentence was missing I, J, Q, R, and W. Just so you know for future reference, since you've told me before that you like to be aware of these things )

Next challenge: Write three sentences, each of which consists of at least ten words. None of the letters in any sentence may be repeated in either of the other sentences.
