Once a mod has approved your team, you can start battling. Go to the main Anime Style Battling page and click around. Check out a few battles and you ought to get a feel for the way these things are set up. The ASB Rules post also contains some useful info.

To add pictures, embed an image URL in between [img][/img] tags. For example, [img]http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/sprites/bw/1.png[/img] would create a picture like this:

Sprite URLs can be found from sprite resources such as this one.

No, that was a early deal. Nowadays, there are a few ways to do so. Either winning Gym Battles or using a token are the two current ways, iirc.
