    Default Battle Tower.

Ok, I'm about to challenge the battle tower in Sapphire and I need a third teammember. Something that can take hits, (p)haze, etc. would be recommended as I got a sweeper and sp.sweeper already.

    Salamence@Lum?
    ----------
Lonely (yeah, I was to lazy to wait for an adamant one)
    116 Hp | 252 Atk | 140 Spd
    *Dragon Dance
    *Earthquake
    *Aerial Ace
    *Rock Slide/Brickbreak

I couldn't get HP: Flying. Sweeper.

    Starmie@Leftovers (OK)
    --------
    Modest
    252 Sp.atk | 24 spd | 228 HP
    *Surf
    *Icebeam
    *Thunderbolt
    *Recover/Psychic

Sp.Sweeper. This will be my starter if all goes well

Any idea's on a third partymember, or comment on above pokemon.

Hrm: Weezing seems like a good fit here. Pretty bulky, Max out HP/Def/Sp Def. Give it Haze and Pain Split to be a goddamn annoyance. Higher up in the tower yer sure to run into Psychics which Starmie should be able to cover.

I think its viable, but I'm curious to see what else may be suggested aside from Skarm.

No suggestions for a third team member, but I will note that it's not too common to emphasize HP EVs in a sweeper. I'm also hesitant to recommend Recover on Starmie; such moves are better suited for tanks than sweepers. Starmie in particular really doesn't have the HP to make it worthwhile, from what I can tell. In my opinion, you'd probably be better served to pack the bulk of your EVs into Speed and Sp. Atk (in Salamence's case, Atk).

Perhaps I'm wrong about the EVs, of course... God knows I haven't made it very far in Battle Tower. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong about the redistribution. (On the other hand, I'm pretty confident that dropping Recover would be beneficial.)

Yeah for sweepers it's best to pump up speed and whatever stat it's attacking with. There are some exceptions, like if the pokemon has a low base speed there's not much point in raising it from bad to a little better, so you're better off concentrating on defenses. Salamence and Starmie are, of course no slouches when it comes to speed, so there's nothing wrong with making it really high.

Starmie is one of my favorite pokemon, it's been consistently reliable for all four generations, and some of it's best moves are first gen moves. Surf, Tunderbolt, Ice Beam, Psychic, and Recover are all great moves for it. I've found success with Recover in the past, but I think lefties will help with the durability so I'd go with the four attacking moves.

Yeah you're right about the speed (which is correct in normal cases), but I looked up some pokemon from the battle tower and with this EVspread it's faster than anything, 'cept Crobat, Sceptile and Ninjask. With 24 Speed EV's, it has a base speed stat of 121, which is faster than 120 pokemon and other Starmie. So I pumped the rest in HP, for some durability (if he takes in incoming Psychic or Ice attack).

Well, Weezing was my first guess, so unless someone else has an option, I'm going with Weezing. Plus, Weezing is cool.

So for a set. I can't get Misdreavus, so no Painsplit is available. (I have Firered, Emerald and Sapphire)

    What about:

    Weezing@Leftovers
252 HP | 252 def | 4 atk (Should I drop some def in favor of attack?)
    Impish (or Relaxed)
    *Sludgebomb
    *Will-o-Wisp
    *Haze
    *Rest

Explosion or Flamethrower are also options.
