Yes, I think it's probably some left over material from the earlier production stages of the game. And as you're not (unless you cheat) able to walk through trees you'd have never reached and saw it anyway, so there was no reason to remove it in the end.

i like these little tidbits too, but I wish they did more. a door that automatically pushes you out? why not like a slide or something? xD
