    Default Effort points

Can someone explain how effort value works? And does anyone have a link to Meowth346's site? Thanks.

    Default Effort points

Hmm. I'll explain this once again.

Effort Value. This value is a number between 0 and 255. Every stat(HP, Attack, Defense, etc.) has its own seperate Effort Value. So when you first get a pokemon, each stat has an EV of 0. When you fight wild pokemon, you're EV will go up, corresponding to the highest stat of the pokemon you've defeated. For example, if you fight a Steelix, its highest stat is Defense, meaning your Defense EV will rise. Understand? Good, lets continue.

This is similar to how it worked in GSC, except in GSC there was no limit to your EV's. In RS, there is a limit. When your total Effort Value(all 6 stats added together) reaches 510, none of your EV's will rise. So, if your pokemon is at level 100, and you're stats don't rise anymore from box tricking, then you've reaches your max EV's. No matter what you do, nothing will raise your stats.

Vitamins give 10 Effort Value points each. Defeating wild pokemon gives varying amounts of Effort Value, depending on who you fight.

It would take a long time to figure out what your Effort Values are, because you'd have to figure out what your DV's are, plus your personality, then work backwards through a bunch of formula's. Effort Values will be quite important in Online Battling, though.

    Any questions, just ask.

Breifly, effort values are earned by a pokémon for each pokémon defeated, similar to experience. Before R/S, the formula was that a number equal to the defeated pokémon's base values was added to each of the winner's individual characteristic effort values (Special Attack adding to the Special one in GSC). The end effect on the current stat formula is a bonus point or two every few levels over a wild pokémon with the same individual values.

This seems to have changed radically for ruby/sapphire, but the exact effects are not precisely known. It does seem that there is an overall cap on the effort values allowed for all 6 stats now, in addition to the old cap for each one. On the other hand, it appears that only one stat earns effort for each battle, based on the opponent's best base stat, in which case it will mean trainers will need to be more selective when training their pokémon.

I think Pokemon Elite 2000 has a section on GSC effort and the stats formula as well:
