While Madden has...Madden in it, ESPN has some guy from Jackass.
So Madden wins.
Now I am a fan of ESPN and I own ESPN 2K5. I love this game and it was only 20$s. I can't really compare the two due to the fact that I don't own Madden. So post your opinions on these 2 games.

ESPN does have the right idea to charge $20. No reason to pay 50 bucks every year for what is basically an expansion pack.
Hell, with download content they should even charge you $20. They should just give you roster updates each year.

Like "I already have it" is a better reason.Originally Posted by kainashi

Have you PLAYED THE GAME? It isn't a expansion pack it has many new gameplay modes. The VIP being the most orginal. So before you start insulting ESPN please play it. Oh and if you are saying this for ALL football games please forgive me.Originally Posted by Razola

Madden's offensive stuff is way too lopsided. You can't run for anything, all you can do is throw to a big receiver (That's why the Eagles dominate in Madden, good d and all you need to do is call a TOJust give him a fade route and it's over, double teams, zone, doesn't matter, he'll still catch at least 60-70% of em ). I like ESPN's graphics and gameplay better, you can actually do running plays without being stuffed for 1-2 yard gains every time, and you can't run the same play every freaking time and get away with it like in Madden.
He's not insulting the game at all. Each year football games come out with new rosters, and a couple of new game modes. Basicly an expansion.Originally Posted by Crazy

As for new modes...does it radically change the way foosball is played? No, it's football, only with different situations attached to it. All youcan do each year is tweak graphics and gameplay, update the roster, and add cellphone updates to Franchise mode. There's only so much that can be added to the Sim games.
It isn't as easy to catch on as you think. There are MANY Madden fanboys who believe their game is above all and is better than any other. They also think the core gameplay is way different each year. How was I to know if you were or were not a fanboy? Which is exactly why you should forgive me.

Well since I've played both probably more than all of you combined, I feel obliged to offer my opinions.
Why Madden is better:
- much better online set up
- less obvious glitches and flaws in gameplay
- overall smoother gameplay
- more options on defence
Why ESPN is better:
- gameplay seems more realistic
- gameplay is much more involved
- much stronger online community
- offline is better
- $20
- running game is fantastic
Why Madden sucks
- online you run into 12 year olds, an endless amount of cheaters, and a notorious dline glitch
- DB's sometimes make ridiculous plays, yet at other times don't make any play at all
- graphics are terrible, especially compared to ESPN
- running game has very few animations and half of the buttons are practically useless
Why ESPN sucks
- DB's refuse to make a play, and when you control them, they do terrible animations
- it's too easy to just lob it to a star reciever and watch him make a miraculous catch in double or even triple coverage
- DB's are simply stupid and watch the play happen and never react
- way too easy to QB scramble, even with the slowest QB's
- the same routes work either every time or never
- weekly preparation doesn't work. you ALWAYS go down
I voted for ESPN. They definitely have the right idea with $20, and while I won't get either game, $50 is ridiculous for what is essentially just updated rosters. Sure there are new features, but none really affect the gameplay.
1:You can turn off the weekly preperation so it isn't bad. 2:It isn't as easy as you claim to throw all the time. I would know because I play on All-Star. Now in Pro it is very easy so yeah in that mode you can get away with just about anything. Oh and 3:Those guys do react. You must be playing on a lower level. On a side note some features do affect gameplay like the hot routes and DB adjustments for example.

lil_wayne you are my hero.
I will get ESPN this year. It's the same damn football game ever year with a few changes and $20 > $50. That is all there is to it for me.
I have also played both ESPN and Madden, even though ESPN I only played for about 10 minutes and I own Madden. I liked the way wayne did this so I will try my own list, but for just madden considering I know it better. Also though for 20 bucks you really can't go wrong if you aren't too into football, but like it from time to time.
+ Positives of Madden:
+ Long running franchise game, that improves every year.
+ Muscle definition is shown and everyone isn't just skinny.
+ Playmaker options is great for spotting a blitz or calling one yourself.
+ Controls are easier to learn, and beginners pick up fine with it.
+ Field Goal kicking is solid, and doesn't slide when setting up a kick.
+ Game changes views when it comes to clutch kicking, slowing down to make it more dramatic. (I personally like it).
+ If the computer is down by 50, there isn't a miracle to make the game a close one, even though they can make some "miracle plays".
+ Stamina takes effect, slowing down players.
- Negatives of Madden:
- Despite the fact that it improves, new glitches seem to come out every year, and there never is a patch to fix them.
- The monologue tends to repeat and even sometimes says things that didn't happen. (Ex: They punted it out of bounds and they said I fumbled it)
- It seems to me that from every franchise year I play, at least one game of the season freezes and I have to simulate.
- Every year its 50 bucks and there never is a deal to trade in madden and pay only 30 bucks or something.
- Though I like the added muscles some people look like freaks and over-steroided (new word). Yes Ray Lewis is ripped but he isn't the black hulk.
- The run game is almost impossible unless you have an eye for defense and can see blitzes coming. I can sometimes and sometimes I can't see them.
- DB's can seem to slap the ball even if they are 10 yards back of the WR. That makes no sense.
- On offense after the snap, the playmaker tends to screw up, and pick its own player to do play maker. I wish they'd make it 2 buttons so you can hit the button then choose the receiver to move. Its not always the close receiver that "play-makes".
Overall I said Madden is still an awesome game, because its more than just football. Its quick-paced with its Accelerated Clock so that the boring stuff can go away. If you like realism, I'd say both are right for you... If you like a proven winner, go with Madden. Flame posts need not reply.

while i voted for madden, i did it because that's what i play all the time. i did play ESPN once, but only for a short time because i couldn't pick up the controls or anything. don't get me wrong, i'm not saying ESPN isn't good, i'm just picking madden because that's what i'm used to.

its madden 2005 not madden 2k5
2k5 is an abbreviation for 2005, cockrocker. I have yet to play Espn, but we have Madden, so that's my vote. I tend not to play sports video games too often, but I do with football.
madden wins for one simple reason: hit stick
end of debate
Burning in water, drowning in flame
What is this hit stick? Does it rap up the intensity of a tackle? If so that really is nothing new. From what I have heard of Madden that is the only real improvement. Is this true or not? NOTE:I am not saying anything bad of Madden, because both games have their flaws. I will explain why the hitstick is noithing new when someone either qoutes me.
Random Mark Twain Saying
"Suppose you were an idiot. Suppose you were a member of Congress. Ah, but I repeat myself."
What would it matter if the hit stick isn't new? ESPN doesn't have it, which gives the advantage to Madden there.
CHOMP~
Wrong ESPN has Maximum Tackling and you could always hit as hard as you want to.Where is the advantage? I mean if you want a normal hit on ESPN don't charge. If you want a powerful hit then charge up. Maximum tackling lets you escape from a tackle yet no one says a word of that.
Random Mark Twain Saying
"Suppose you were an idiot. Suppose you were a member of Congress. Ah, but I repeat myself."
yes, but just saying hit stick is cool. and the sound it makes. it's oh so sweet.
