I agree that the ref shouldn't assume that a Protect is intended for anyone but the user; however, since Hanzo's mad dash to Osloki resulted in him being less than foot in front of the statue, the fact that the Protect covered Osloki was inevitable. It's a simple matter of placement—where he was standing, he couldn't not Protect the statue.

It's different than the example you're referencing, where, according to DL's appraisal, the two Pokemon weren't even beside each other.

Rubbing its scythes together aggressively, Hanzo leaps in front of Osloki and forms a Protective bubble that contains both himself and the statue within its perimeter.

That's all I meant by dash. Here, I'll draw a bird's-eye-view diagram because I don't think you're getting it.

This is where the Pokemon are standing when they're initially given their commands. Both are fresh on the field, so they're closer to their trainers than to each other. They have a clear line of sight with one another and with Osloki. The squiggly blue thing up top is water.

In order to block the Shock Wave, Hanzo is told to get in front of Osloki. The command did not specify a particular proximity to Osloki, but it makes sense that Hanzo is going to execute the command the fastest/easiest way possible. The shortest distance he can travel that will allow him to block the attack just so happens to put him within inches of Osloki. If Hanzo strays any further from Osloki, he's travelling a greater distance from his initial starting position which he's not going to do given the fact that he has a limited amount of time before Munch fires the Shock Wave.

In regards to your complaint about Munch having enough time to shoot the statue, Munchlax is tied for the honour of slowest Pokemon. Gallade is sixteen times faster. That gives Hanzo enough time to leap in front of the statue and throw up a Protect, which invariably encases the statue within its perimeter.

I realize the placement of everything isn't made clear by the reffing itself, but that's part of writing reffings that aren't all five-page short stories: you have to leave some details out, such as where exactly the Pokemon are in relation to one another and, yes, in relation to Osloki. The words can't always communicate that.

If you still take issue with my reffing, get one of the Head Refs and they'll have the privilege of deciphering my squiggly little diagrams.

This doesn't prove possible, though she does manage to make Hanzo forget how to execute the last attack he used: Psycho Cut. So. That's something. Hanzo, meanwhile, offers a round of applause for this terrific feat of mental whatever-you-wanna-call-it. Encore! Encore!

Hanzo marches right up to Osloki and attempts to tear into the tiki god with a Psycho Cut, only he isn't entirely sure how that move is supposed to go. Hrm. Well, that was a complete failure. Munch, meanwhile, performs another Amnesia. And now Hanzo seems to have forgotten how to use Encore instead. Rotten luck.

Hanzo turns his attention away from Osloki and focuses on the sun instead. He beats his scythes together with a loud clattering sound, causing the sunlight to burn with greater intensity. Munch tries to perform a Thunder, but her body goes rigid instead. Ah well. Would've prolly missed anyway.

Osloki's eyes suddenly flash red. Erp. Never good. Two mental effects suddenly encroach upon Hanzo's brain as he becomes both bewildered and hopelessly infatuated with Munch. Munch, meanwhiles, laughs out loud at her foe's misfortune.

Hanzo's stomach burns as the Toxin increases in power <-5 HP>.

After the craziness of the past two rounds, the battle progresses as Hanzo closes his eyes and Calms his Mind in such a manner that alleviates his Confusion. Munch closes his eyes and... presto! Hanzo has forgotten how to use Calm Mind. Just like that, the details of Encore rush back to the Gallade as the move is remembered. Huzzah.

Hanzo considers his orders to present his opponent with a beautiful Magical Leaf... and decides that's simply not good enough. He traipses toward the statue and begins trying to pull it out of the ground, which just isn't possible, though he struggles and struggles anyway. Love is hard work. Munch, meanwhile, spits a glob of Toxic goo at Hanzo. Nothing happens.

Having regained a bit of lucidity for the moment, Hanzo sets his sights on Munch and begins doing his scales. The notes he croaks are warbly and unpleasant and Munch can hardly stand the sound. Her whole body locks up with Paralysis and she's unable even to put her hands over her ears. Mercy! Mercy!

We reach the beginning of the tenth round as Hanzo closes his eyes and enters a Focused, meditative state. Biding his time, Hanzo does nothing as Munch waddles toward Osloki and attacks the statue with a series of random, STAB-boosted blows. Osloki's eyes glow as it accepts the first blessing its received in six rounds. When at last his meditations are complete, Hanzo springs toward Munch and clobbers the Munchlax with one hell of the punch. The squat Pokemon is sent flying like a chubby blue comment.

Munch: <-25 HP; -5 EP>

Osloki: <+16 HP>

Hanzo considers obeying his master's orders to Torment Munch, but decides that he ultimately could never do something so mean to something so lovely. He leans back and watches Munch's undulating rolls of fat as she raises her arms overhead and charges up a Shadow Ball. She fires it and it strikes Hanzo in the head, lowering the Gallade's Special Defence to its original level.

Munch: <-6 EP>

As Munch is once more locked up by Paralysis (she really has bad luck with that third action, doesn't she?), Hanzo sets his sights on Osloki. He clobbers the statue with a Fire Punch, maxing out its damage meter. Osloki glows purple as it places a curse upon Munch: the little Pokemon suffers a sudden Burn and forgets something rather important.

Osloki: <+8 HP>

While Osloki resets, Hanzo winces as the Toxin reaches a new level of pain <-9 HP>. Munch can feel her Burn flare up <-3 HP>.

Hanzo then leaps upon Munch like a maniac and pummels her with every random physical blow in his arsenal. Munch, even amidst all this chaos, still manages to yield to her slothful nature and... fall asleep.

Hanzo decides not to attack for the moment and instead writes a love poem for Munch. He titles it "Ode to a Slumbering Glutton." I'm pretty sure it's a lock for the Pullitzer.

Ash, try checking Bulbapedia or Seribii (and a few others, I think). They have moves that all Pokemon can learn, and if you keep it open during a battle, you can prevent snaffus like that.

Also, have you seen a Snorlax dig? Pre-evos have to carry on, and digging snorlax is a bit ridiculous.

S'all cute like that... which makes it all the more jarring when a Focus Blast of explosive proportions launches the Munchlax way up into the air and then slams him hard against the ground. Yowch. Munch lets out a Snore (which sounds vaguely like a burp) and the soundwaves pummel Hanzo hard in the chest. He looks dejected. Why would his paramour do such a thing?

Munch: <-21 HP; -2 EP>

Rather than attack, Hanzo bends over and starts weeping because at this point he doesn't think Munch will ever truly see the big, strapping Gallade he really is. And then another Snore care of Munch adds insult to injury (or, rather, vice-versa). It's a hard life out there when you're a hopeless romantic.

Suddenly, Munch wakes. Yay! She tries wiggling her fingers, but isn't fast enough: Hanzo overcomes his grief and blasts her to high heaven. Munch is thrown out over the water and lands belly-first in the tossing surf. Well, at least her body floats, I guess.

Hanzo mourns the loss of his lady love.

Leo grabs his tail and begins swishing it around, but Hanzo stops him dead with a cheeky remark about how Leo is half the painter Brueghel was and six times as ugly. Oh snap! Artistry burn! Leo hangs her head and lets out a single, dramatic tear.

Deciding that it's been a while since Osloki received a little lovin', Hanzo strikes the tiki god with a speedy, shadowy strike. Leo tries something similar, slathering her body with glowing black paint as she strikes the statue hard. The paint drips away as the attack connects.

Hanzo marches up to Leo and strikes the Smeargle with an open-plamed hit... or, rather, attempts to. Leo slathers her body in black paint and zips to the side with impressive speed. She comes around behind Hanzo and jabs him in the back hard. Yowch!

Destiny Bond is an intangible connection, not something that can be physically evaded. It can be Protected against, but otherwise it's unavoidable.

Also, I got Head Ref approval from Grey before posting this. Destiny Bond does indeed bypass the cap.

Which is why it is banned in almost every single battle. You'll note it is not banned in this one, hence my choice to use it. I didn't expect it to work, given that Hanzo is at 0 energy. A lot of refs, take 0 energy as a time to relax to regain some, so it could have easily failed and Hanzo could have fainted straight away. Heads or Tails, this time the coin landed on its side.
